ABILENE HIGH (10-2) VS. JUSTIN NORTHWEST (10-2) - FRIDAY, 7 P.M. - WICHITA FALLS

SERIES HISTORY: First meeting

The Eagles forced four turnovers to knock off Denton Ryan last week, and now they meet up with Justin Northwest in Wichita Falls Friday night.

Northwest, in the postseason for the sixth year in a row under former Hardin-Simmons quarterback Bill Poe, has only reached the third round of the playoffs once before, falling to Lubbock Cooper 34-14 in 2018.

The Texans finished tied in District 3-5A Division I, losing only to Aldeo 38-13 and Denton Ryan 28-14. Ryan is, of course, the team the Eagles just eliminated from the playoffs. Those are the only two losses on the season for the Texans, who beat Prosper Rock Hill and McKinney North in the non-district.

The Eagles have been to the third round of the playoffs in three of the last four seasons. They fell in round three to Burleson Centennial last year and to Denton Guyer in 2020. Abilene High has not advanced to the fourth round since 2011.

#6 BROWNWOOD (10-1) VS. SPRINGTOWN (9-3) - FRIDAY, 7 P.M. - CROWLEY

SERIES HISTORY: Brownwood leads 2-0

The Lions are in the regional round of the playoffs for the second straight season and are hoping to avoid bowing out like they did last year against Wichita Falls.

Brownwood rolled past Canyon Randall 37-10 last week to advance and will face a Springtown team that blew out El Paso Riverside 62-21.

The Porcupines have been used to deep playoff runs of late, reaching the state semifinals in 2019 and the fourth round in both 2020 and 2021 before falling to Canyon Randall in the bi-district round last year. They will be without quarterback Hudson Hulet, however, as he broke his leg in the third quarter of the win last week.

Springtown finished second to Decatur in District 4-4A Division I, falling to the Eagles 23-17. They also lost to Alvarado 48-41 and Graham 36-15 in non-district in the first two weeks of the season.

Both teams played Waco Connally this season. The Porcupines got past them 22-19 on the road on September 29, and Brownwood squeaked past them 31-28 at home the week before.

These two teams haven’t played since 2015, when the Lions roared to a 72-28 victory.

CLYDE (10-1) VS. #4 BROCK (9-3) - FRIDAY, 1 P.M. - GRAHAM

SERIES HISTORY: Brock leads 1-0

The Bulldogs are looking to reach the fourth round of the playoffs for the first time in school history, but they have a huge test to do it against state power Brock.

Clyde is in the third round for the second time ever and the first time since 2008, while Brock is looking to reach the state championship game for the third time in a row. They have lost in the title game the last two seasons to Lorena and Franklin.

The Bulldogs got past Shallowater at Shotwell Stadium Saturday afternoon to advance, while the Eagles blasted Muleshoe 76-13. Brock has scored 59 or more points in seven of their past eight games, with the only close win coming in a 26-14 contest against Paradise.

Brock played its usual very strong non-district slate, falling to Texarkana Pleasant Grove, Wimbereley and Gunter and beating 4A Wichita Falls Hirschi. They have picked up eight wins in a row since falling to Gunter, 35-12.

Clyde has picked up a pair of close playoff wins to stay alive and will need to be at their best to beat Brock.

This is the first meeting between the two since a 49-3 Brock bi-district playoff win in 2017.

COMANCHE (8-4) VS. #1 GUNTER (12-0) - FRIDAY, 12 P.M. - CHOCTAW STADIUM

SERIES HISTORY: First meeting

The Indians knocked off previously unbeaten Scurry-Rosser last week and now get a shot against another unbeaten opponent, #1 ranked Gunter.

The Tigers won it all last season and enter on a 27-game winning streak. The latest victim was Wichita Falls City View in an 83-6 decision last week. Gunter has won its two playoff games by a combined 158-6 and has only allowed double digits in points twice this season when they beat Brock 35-12 and beat Prosper Walnut Grove 64-24. That 34 against Brock was the fewest points they’ve scored in a game all year.

The Indians picked up their fifth win in a row last week and seem to be getting back to their top form when they were ranked in the 3A D2 top ten in early September.

#6 HAWLEY (10-2) VS. SONORA (11-1) - FRIDAY, 6 P.M. - SAN ANGELO

SERIES HISTORY: Hawley leads 1-0

The Bearcats beat up on Panhandle last week to set up a round-three showdown with Sonora for a second straight season.

Hawley busted the Broncos 57-26 in 2022 on their way to winning the state championship and will now meet a Sonora team that was in the state rankings for most of the season.

The Broncos beat Farwell 42-14 last week and snuck past Anson 29-27 in the bi-district round. Hawley beat Anson 45-0 at home in the regular season.

Sonora running back Edgar Deluna has been tough to stop this season. He ranks fourth in the state in rushing yards with 2374 and fifth in the state with 38 total touchdowns, according to the MaxPreps leaderboard.

The Bearcats have won eight in a row since falling to Albany in their non-district finale, including their dominant 43-point win over a Panhandle squad that was favored by many to beat them.

#1 ALBANY (12-0) VS. MUENSTER (8-4) - FRIDAY, 1 P.M. - WEATHERFORD

SERIES HISTORY: Albany leads 5-1

The Lions bring their 23-game winning streak with them into yet another playoff matchup against Muenster. The Lions and Hornets will be playing in the postseason for the fifth time since 2012 this week, the most recent was a 34-21 third-round Albany win in 2021.

Albany shut out Celeste 56-0 last week to run their shutout streak to four games in a row. The Lions have outscored their last seven opponents by a combined 387-7, with Roscoe scoring the only points against them in that stretch.

Muenster beat Haskell in bi-district 44-7 and whipped Wink 42-14 last week to get here. They placed second in District 8 to Collinsville and lost in non-district play to Bells, Paradise, and Pottsboro, who all ended up as 3A playoff teams.

This will be Albany’s toughest test since the Roscoe game, but one they should be able to pass if they keep playing like they have all season.

ROSCOE (10-2) VS. #4 COLLINSVILLE (11-1) - FRIDAY, 2 P.M. - SPRINGTOWN

SERIES HISTORY: Windthorst leads 1-0

The Plowboys are in the third round for the first time since 2016 and looking to get to the fourth round for the first time since 2000.

The Pirates are coming off a 69-21 win over Miles last week, a team Roscoe squeaked by 34-33 in the regular season finale to claim the two seed from District 6-2A Division II. They lost to Albany in the fourth round last season, which is tied for the deepest playoff run in school history.

They are a passing juggernaut, led by quarterback Logan Jenkins, who threw for 449 yards and six touchdowns to six different players last week. He also ran for two touchdowns, for good measure. Both Colin Barnes and Rylan Newman have gone over the 1,000-yard mark as receivers.

Windthorst earned its best win of the season last week by whipping Windthorst 50-22 at McMurry. The Plowboys were nearly unstoppable on the ground, racking up nearly 400 yards rushing in the win.

The contrast of styles between the Roscoe ground game and Collinsville passing attack will be fun to see. If the Plowboys can control the clock and keep the Pirate offense off the field they should have a chance to pull off the upset.

Roscoe: 39.3
Collinsville: 51.9

#4 WESTBROOK (10-1) VS. #9 BORDEN COUNTY (11-1) - SATURDAY, 2 P.M. - SWEETWATER

SERIES HISTORY: Borden County leads 10-6

The Region I title is on the line in Sweetwater Saturday afternoon as the two-time defending state champs meet up with ninth-ranked Borden County.

The two teams have several common opponents. Borden County beat Highland 54-24, and Westbrook beat them 46-0. The Coyotes beat Rankin 42-30, and the Wildcats beat them twice, 52-0 and 72-22. Borden County beat Ira 48-0 in the bi-district playoffs, and Westbrook beat the Bulldogs 58-8. Both teams also beat Garden City, the Coyotes, 50-0, and the Wildcats, 60-8.

MAY (9-3) VS. #5 JONESBORO (11-1) - SATURDAY, 5 P.M. - DUBLIN

SERIES HISTORY: Jonesboro leads 9-8

The Tigers get another shot at Jonesboro after falling to the Eagles 48-22 on October 27 in the game that decided the district title.

A big factor in this game will be the status of Tiger Braden Steele, who had to miss much of the Leverett’s Chapel game with an injury. May beat the Lions without him 57-12 and carry a ton of momentum into the rematch with the Eagles.

Jonesboro shut out Chester last week, 64-0. Their only loss all season was in week two to Westbrook, so they bring a ten-game winning streak into the contest on Saturday. The Eagles have not allowed a point so far in the postseason.

This will be the fourth playoff meeting between the two programs. Jonesboro knocked May out of the playoffs in 2017, while the Tigers returned the favor in 2020 and 2021.

#1 BENJAMIN (12-0) VS. #3 JAYTON (12-0) - FRIDAY, 6 P.M. - HERMLEIGH

SERIES HISTORY: Jayton leads 13-2

The matchup folks in the northern part of the Big Country have been waiting and hoping for is finally here as unbeaten and top-ranked Benjamin will meet unbeaten and third-ranked Jayton Friday night in Hermleigh.

The Jaybirds cruised past Strawn 58-12 to advance, while the Mustangs had to work for it but got past Newcastle in a 112-84 shootout. It was the first complete game Benjamin has had to play all season.

Jayton is the last team to beat Benjamin. They knocked the Mustangs out of the playoffs in 2021, and Benjamin has not lost since, reeling off 26 wins in a row.

Both teams can score a lot and both play great defense. This could be one of the better matchups in the state this week, and some folks think this game will decide the eventual state champion.
