#25 MIDLAND LEGACY (2-0) AT #9 ABILENE HIGH (2-0)

SERIES HISTORY: Midland Legacy leads 36-24

The Eagles are in the state rankings after a pair of impressive victories, and now they get set for their biggest test so far this season as they host Midland Legacy.

The Rebels have cruised past Amarillo and Tascosa, both teams in Abilene High’s district, 35-7 and 63-34 to start the season 2-0.

They feature Purdue commit Marcos Davila, a four-star rated quarterback, who lit up the Eagle secondary last season, going 20-23 with 359 yards and five touchdowns in a 56-20 win.

The Warbirds have improved immensely since then, but they likely won’t face a more talented passer all season. He is coming off a bit of a down game where he went 9-21 for 269 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions.

Abilene High has been impressive all around through the past two weeks and will have to play at their best to take down the Rebels.

Legacy has won four in a row in the series. The last AHS win was 31-24 in 2018.

STAT LEADERS

The Bulldogs fell 35-21 to Brownwood in the home opener and 34-21 to Monterey a week ago.

COOPER (0-2) AT SAN ANGELO CENTRAL (1-1)

SERIES HISTORY: San Angelo Central leads 27-21-1

The Cougars hit the road to San Angelo to battle the 6A Bobcats Friday night.

Cooper started the year 0-2 before beating Central in overtime last season, and would love for history to repeat itself this time around.

The Cougar defense held its own against Abilene High, but the offense, especially the passing game, will need to step up for Cooper to pick up a win on the road.

Last year was the first meeting since 2013, and Cooper has won six of seven.

BRECKENRIDGE (0-2) AT CISCO (0-2)

SERIES HISTORY: Cisco leads 32-16-4

Two teams in need of a win meet Friday night in Cisco as the Buckaroos make the short road trip to face the Loboes.

Breckenridge has a 57-35 loss to Jacksboro and a 24-21 loss to Childress on the ledger, while Cisco fell 40-28 at Clyde and 27-10 at home to Wall.

Another loss is not the end of the world for either team in the grand scheme of things, but getting a little momentum with district play just around the corner would be huge.

CLYDE (2-0) AT MERKEL (2-0)

SERIES HISTORY: Merkel leads 33-25-2

The Bulldogs and Badgers resume their rivalry with a big contest Friday night in Merkel.

Both teams are off to 2-0 starts and are looking to get to 3-0. It would be Clyde’s first 3-0 start since 2016 and Merkel’s first since 2001.

The Bulldogs took care of Cisco and Eastland to earn their wins, while Merkel got past Clifton and Stanton.

The Badgers will have to do their best to try to stop Clyde quarterback Blake Carr, who is off to a great start this season. Merkel will counter with what looks like the better of the two defenses and a host of weapons on offense, including Maddox OMalley, who has played very well at QB through two weeks.

Clyde beat Merkel 41-21 at home last season.

SERIES HISTORY: Wall leads 27-13

It’s yet another showdown between these two as unbeaten Wall visits unbeaten Jim Ned.

The Hawks were in the 3A Division II rankings to start the year, but the Indians jumped into the 3A D1 top ten after their decisive 40-22 win at Holliday last week.

A year ago, Wall won a defensive struggle 3-0. This one may also be on the lower-scoring side of things, as both defenses have been very good so far.

STAT LEADERS

Gunnar Dillard: 10-16, 159 yds, 2 TD; 110 yds, 3 TD
Nathan Pepper: 163 yds, 1 TD
Ryan Allen: 6 rec, 136 yds, 2 TD

The Indians dominated Bangs 70-0 last week to improve to 2-0, while Early followed up a 52-10 season-opening win over the Dragons with last week’s 48-14 loss to Tolar.

#6 HARDIN-SIMMONS (1-0) AT #11 WISCONSIN-LA CROSSE - SATURDAY, 1 P.M

SERIES HISTORY: Tied 1-1

Hardin-Simmons hits the road for the first of two road games way outside of Texas as they head to 11th-ranked Wisconsin-La Crosse.

La Crosse is also 1-0 after a 31-6 road win at Dakota State, an NAIA school in Madison, South Dakota.

The Cowboys cruised past Albright (PA) 47-3 in a relatively easy season opener.

This one will be big for the Cowboys as far as their playoff hopes go, and beating a ranked team on the road would be huge on Selection Sunday.

HSU is playing La Crosse for the first time since a 24-23 victory in 2008. They lost their previous matchup at La Crosse, 47-21, in 2007.
