***All picks are straight-up, not against the spread.

There are plenty of open dates across the Big Country this week, as many schools have their week off before beginning district play next week.

There are still 11 11-man, 16 six-man, and four college games to discuss, however, so let's get to the picks, which were the best of the season so far last week.

TASCOSA (1-3, 0-1) AT ABILENE HIGH (3-2, 1-0)

SERIES HISTORY: Series tied 5-5

The Warbirds are flying high after a dominating win over Monterey to kick off district play, while the Rebels are in a tough spot and haven’t won since week one.

Tascosa only managed 109 yards of total offense in its 42-6 loss to Amarillo last week and has only scored a combined 12 points in its last three games.

Abilene High had 14 points in the first quarter last week of their 59-14 victory over Monterey. Offense, defense, and special teams were all clicking as the Eagles reintroduced themselves as favorites to win the district title.

The Rebels have won five in a row in the series after the Eagles won the first five games the teams played. The last Warbird win was in 2013 by a 54-14 score.

#9 STEPHENVILLE (3-2) AT #7 BROWNWOOD (5-0)

SERIES HISTORY: Brownwood leads 47-33-2

A rivalry game AND a top-ten showdown? Sign me up!

Unbeaten Brownwood hosts Stephenville in the final non-district tune-up for both squads.

Brownwood is coming off a 31-28 victory over 4A D2 contender Waco Connally, while Stephenville took down 5A D2 Wichita Falls Rider 21-20 on the road to improve to 3-2 and get back in the state rankings. The Yellowjackets fell 42-32 to Wylie the week before.

Both teams feature strong offenses. The Lions lean more on the running game, while the Yellowjackets have a great back in Tate Maruska but also go to the air a lot with the big-numbers combo of Ryan Gafford to Tristian Gentry.

The Lions have given up 55 fewer points this season on defense.

Stephenville has won the last three meetings in the series and five out of the last six. The last Lion victory was 38-22 in 2019.

SERIES HISTORY: Holliday leads 1-0

Snyder hits the road to face state-ranked Holliday this week, hoping to extend its winning streak to two before the start of district play against Greenwood next week.

Holliday is a smaller school playing in 3A Division II, but the Eagles are playoff regulars that took care of the Tigers 48-14 in Snyder last season.

Holliday beat Childress 24-14 last week. Their only loss of the season was 40-22 to Jim Ned.

The Tigers are coming off their best offensive performance of the season. They scored 56 against Big Spring, and their scoring defense continues to be very good, tied with Hawley for sixth best in the Big Country, allowing 17.4 points per game.

This is just the second ever meeting between the teams.

ESTACADO (4-1) AT SWEETWATER (4-1)

SERIES HISTORY: Estacado leads 11-8-1

Sweetwater fell from the ranks of the unbeaten last week against Clyde and now has what could be considered an even tougher matchup against 4A D1 Lubbock Estacado.

The Matadors lost for the first time last week as well, dropping a 51-34 decision to Canyon West Plains. The loss knocked them out of the top ten.

Estacado features a great rushing attack led by Bobby Ross, a junior who has offers from Texas Tech, UTSA, and North Texas.

Sweetwater will have some holes to fill after suffering key injuries against Clyde.

The Matadors have won two in a row in the series, but Sweetwater has taken eight of the last ten.

Sweetwater fell at Estacado 24–7 in 2022.

OLNEY (2-1, 0-0) AT STAMFORD (4-0, 1-0)

SERIES HISTORY: Stamford leads 15-7

Stamford continues to knock on the door of the AP/DCTF top ten and will get what is likely their toughest test of the season to date against Olney this week.

The Cubs were off last week and have only allowed 26 points all season. Their offense is nothing to write home about so far, but they do feature a flexbone attack that can be tough to stop.

Stamford has blown out all four teams it has played so far this season by a combined 185-19. The Bulldogs have recorded two straight shutouts and feature the top scoring defense in the Big Country, allowing just 4.8 points per game, which is over eight points per game better than second-place Roscoe.

Olney is only giving up 8.7 points per contest, which is second to Stanford in the Big Country and Beyond rankings that include every team in every Big Country district.

The Bulldogs have beaten the Cubs eight times in a row dating back to 2001. The last Olney victory was 34-12 in 2000. Stamford won the matchup 22-13 last season.

Anson has won three straight in the series over the Wolves, including a 22-6 win last season.

The Loboes host a Winters team that is still searching for its first win. The Blizzards had no answers for Stamford in a 63-0 district opening decision last week.

Winters is giving up a Big Country worst 56.4 points per game through five weeks of play.

SAN SABA (2-3, 1-0) AT COLEMAN (4-1, 1-0)

SERIES HISTORY: Coleman leads 18-14-1

Coleman plays its first district home game this week in a battle of District 5 unbeatens against San Saba.

The Armadillos pulled off a tad bit of an upset by beating Hamilton last week 32-28, while the Bluecats got past Goldthwaite on the road 46-33.

The game was Coleman’s best offensive effort of the season, and if you team it with a defense that is ninth in the Big Country, allowing 19.2 points per game, you’ve got the recipe for success.

San Saba had lost three straight after a season-opening win over Florence, Junction, Johnson City, and Eldorado before beating Hamilton.

The Bluecats have won the last two games against the Armadillos, including a 49-0 victory on the road last season.

SERIES HISTORY: Series tied 1-1

Roscoe is the only District 6-2A Division II team in action this week, and the Plowboys have another tough contest on their hands against 4-1 Junction.

The Plowboys came up seven points short of upsetting #3 New Home last week and will now host an Eagle squad that has already doubled its win total from last season.

Junction beat Grape Creek 55-20 last week and also has wins over Cross Plains, D'Hanis, and San Saba after falling to De Leon 40-19 in week one.

Roscoe has the second-best scoring defense in the Big Country, allowing just 13 points per game. Their offense is averaging 29 points per game, the 14th best in the Big Country.

The meeting on Friday will be the first between the two schools since 2015. The Eagles won that game 53-13 to avenge a 14-6 Roscoe win the season before.

Haskell is still looking for win number one on the season, and getting it this week would be a big boost to their playoff chances.

Petrolia comes south this week after a 28-16 district opening victory over Electra, while the Indians are regrouping after a 47-7 loss at Windthorst.

The Pirates have won two of their last three games, beating Quanah 36-0, falling to Alvord 59-6, and then beating Electra last week.

Both teams have faced Olney in non-district play. Petrolia lost 15-13, and Haskell was tied 0-0 at halftime with the Cubs when the game was called due to weather.

Haskell head coach Mitch McLemore faces his old team once again. He coached there in 2019 and 2020, going 10-11 and making the playoffs once.

#9 MAY (4-1) AT #2 OGLESBY (5-0)

SERIES HISTORY: Tied 1-1

The Tigers escaped with a one-point win over Fort Worth THESA last week, while Oglesby, also the Tigers, doubled up Waco Methodist Children’s Home 38-19.

WMCH is the only team with a winning record that Oglesby has faced, giving May the advantage of being more battle-tested heading into this showdown.

The game features two running backs, May’s Braden Steele and Oglesby’s Klyer Fossett, that have already eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark in rushing yards this season.

The Tigers are playing Oglesby for the first time since the 1983 playoffs, a 42-41 Oglesby win. May won the only other meeting, 66-19, in 1976.

ASPERMONT (4-1) AT #7 NEWCASTLE (4-1)

SERIES HISTORY: Aspermont leads 7-5

Aspermont is off to a great start for the second straight season and will be put to the test this week as they visit seventh-ranked Newcastle.

The Bobcats took down previously unbeaten Northside 63-0 last week to bounce back from their only loss of the year, a 50-38 loss to 1A D1 state-ranked Jonesboro.

The Hornets enter on a three-game winning streak, including last week’s 62-12 win over Rule. However, the teams they have beaten this season are just a combined 5-14, and their only loss is to 4-1 Southland. They’ll need to be their best to upset the Bobcats on the road this week.

The Hornets beat the Bobcats last season 38-24.

LORAINE (0-5) AT #1 BENJAMIN (5-0)

SERIES HISTORY: Benjamin leads 2-0

A game that looked like it would be one of the best in the Big Country this season has lost a bit of luster due to a slow start and tons of injuries for Loraine. Star AJ Williams has not seen the field since week one, a big blow to the Bulldog offense and defense.

The Bulldogs fell to 0-5 last week but played their best game of the season in a 70-62 loss to Sands.

The Mustangs kept rolling and extended their winning streak to 19 games with a 77-12 victory over Roby last week.

The teams had never met before last season, when Benjamin beat Loraine twice, once in the regular season and again in the 1A D2 state championship game.

The Tigers took down Moran 51-6 last week and have won two of three, with a loss to Santa Anna sandwiched in between.

Abilene Christian faces Midland Trinity in the second district game for both squads.

Both earned wins last week; Abilene Christian toped Keller Harvest 47-0, while Trinity got past Denton Calvary 67-38.

The rankings say this could be a good ballgame as both are in the sixmanfootball.com top ten for TAPPS Division II, but the spreads say otherwise and make the Panthers the heavy favorite.

HOWARD PAYNE (3-0, 0-0) AT #18 HARDIN-SIMMONS (2-1, 0-0) - SATURDAY, 1 P.M.

SERIES HISTORY: HSU leads 45-24-4

It’s one of the biggest matchups in recent history between these two rivals on Saturday when Howard Payne makes the short trip to Abilene to battle Hardin-Simmons.

The Yellow Jackets were off last weekend, giving them two weeks to prepare for an HSU squad that is coming off a 37-10 upset loss at Endicott in Massachusetts. The Cowboys lost quarterback Gaylon Glynn to injury early in the game and could not get their offense going in the defeat that dropped them from #5 to #18 in the D3football.com poll.

HSU won the meeting last season in a close one, 28-19, and has won 15 straight in the series dating back to 2007.

The Yellow Jackets may have their best chance in some time to knock off the Cowboys and contend for an ASC championship.
