The Bulldogs and Cougars meet again for the Southtown Showdown, and there is a lot on the line. A lot of miles, at the least.

The winner of this one will get to play at home in the first round of the playoffs, while the loser has to hit the road to El Paso.

Wylie took care of Palo Duro last week to get to 3-1 in district play, while the Coogs had no issue at all in a 61-7 Thursday night victory at Lubbock High.

Wylie beat Cooper last season 20-10 in the regular-season finale to clinch the district championship.

SERIES HISTORY: Sweetwater leads 40-29-1

The Tigers and Mustangs meet for the 71st time Friday night at the Mustang Bowl, and playoff hopes for both teams will be on the line.

Snyder was off last week and is riding a four-game losing streak, while the Mustangs have lost two straight to district leaders Hirschi and Graham.

Sweetwater has been one of the better scoring offenses in the Big Country this season, averaging 33.2 points per game. They’ll have a tough test against a Snyder defense that is 12th best in the Big Country, giving up 24.4 points per contest.

The Tigers topped their rivals 28-0 at home last season to get into the playoffs.

The teams have split the last 14 games in the series.

Another huge one in District 3-3A Division I will go down in Tuscola Friday night as Jim Ned hosts Iowa Park.

The Hawks threw a wrench into the district standings and playoff scenarios with their upset of Clyde last week, while the Indians survived on the road at Vernon 36-32 to stay in the district title chase.

This one will be a big time battle up front between two big lines and offenses that love to run the football.

Jim Ned beat Iowa Park 31-13 on the road last season in the first ever meeting between the two teams.

SERIES HISTORY: Ballinger leads 10-3

The Bearcats and Eagles play out the string Friday night with both out of the playoff chase.

Ballinger has played its two best offensive games of the year over the last two weeks, scoring 27 and 21 in losses to Brady and TLCA San Angelo, respectively.

Grape Creek snapped a 19-game losing streak last week by upsetting Brady 20-13.

The Bearcats beat Grape Creek last season 55-21 to avoid going 0-10 and will have to do the same this year.

Ballinger hasn’t had a winless season since going 0-8 in 1976.

The Indians and Mavericks do battle, with the winner getting the three-seed and the loser the four-seed in the playoffs out of 5-3A Division II. That’s a big deal, as the three-seed gets to avoid playing state-ranked Holliday in the first round.

Eastland took care of Dublin 62-7 last week to clinch a playoff spot, while Comanche shut out Merkel 48-0.

The Indians beat Eastland 49-7 last season.

Stop me when you’ve heard this one… a Hawley and Cisco matchup to decide the district title.

These two teams meet with a lot on the line yet again, this time on the Loboes home field.

Cisco took care of business at Anson last week to clinch one of the top three seeds in the playoffs and still has a shot at the top seed, quite the accomplishment after a rough start to the season.

Hawley got past Stamford in an epic clash last week and can pick up a sixth straight district championship with a win at Cisco.

The Wolves picked up a 46-43 triple overtime win last week and now close out the season at Stamford. Colorado City now has multiple wins in a season for the first time since 2018.

The Bulldogs are coming off a close loss to Hawley but still have a lot to play for in the final week of the year and could still end up as the top seed if things go right for them.

Stamford beat Colorado City 45-0 last season and have won seven in a row in the series.
