Cisco College Welcomes John O’Mera as Head Football Coach
Cisco / Abilene, Texas - February 7, 2022 – John O’Mera, one of the most successful coaches in the National Junior College Athletic Association, has been named Head Football Coach at Cisco College, according to Dr. Thad Anglin, President of the College.
O’Mera’s junior college coaching career includes 14 years as Head Football Coach at Eastern Arizona Community College.
“While at Eastern Arizona, Coach O’Mera’s record was an impressive 105 wins and only 52 losses, and included a conference championship along with national rankings,” Dr. Anglin said. “In 2018, Coach O’Mera was recognized as the NJCAA’s third most successful coach.” Coach O’Mera also served as Head Coach at New Mexico Military Institute for six years, where he turned the program into a contender in the Southwest Junior College Football Conference.”
O’Mera has been a successful Western States Football League coach for two decades. During his tenure as head football coach at Eastern Arizona College, he made the football program a force to reckon with year after year, leading the Gila Monster team to 13 out of 14 winning seasons, and winning the WSFL championship in 2018.
Coach O’Mera is currently ranked #3 on the active NJCAA coaches most wins list (143 wins - 91 losses), and is #21 on the all-time wins for NJCAA football coaches. He accumulated an impressive 103/51 record at EAC and a career record of 143-91.
Coach O’Mera started his college career at the University of Oklahoma. After two seasons, he left OU to play for his father at Western New Mexico University, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in education. He began his coaching career as an assistant coach for Las Cruces High School in 1991, and then continued as an assistant coach for New Mexico Military Institute in 1993.
After just one year, he was named the head coach for NMMI’s high school team, and five years later, in 1998, Coach O’Mera took over as the NMMI head coach, where he enjoyed seven years and many successes, including winning the Canon Empire Bowl game in 1999. Shortly after accepting the head coaching position at EAC in 2005, he received his master’s degree in education from Grand Canyon University.
After the WSFL dismantled, he spent a year as the head football coach for Safford High School, in Safford, Ariz., and another year as the head coach for Capitan High School in Capitan, N.M. In his first year with both programs, the teams had winning seasons and made it to the state playoffs.
Outside of football, Coach O’Mera values family; he enjoys the opportunity he has had to work with his lifetime mentor and father, EAC assistant coach Bob O’Mera. He is grateful for and attributes much of his success to the unwavering support of his mother, Roberta, and his most treasured moments are those spent with his wife, D’Anna, and his children – his son Bryant, age 11, and his daughter Crimson, age 19.
