Educated Guesses 4A Division I
We continue in the 11-man football ranks and take a look at 4A Division I.
I call them educated guesses, like your teachers used to, because I feel I have at least a little bit of knowledge about the upcoming season after speaking with area coaches for the 2023 edition of Big Country Blitz.
A veteran Brownwood squad ran away with this district last season, but expect things to be closer this time around.
The Lions should be very stout on defense, but with quarterback Ike Hall as the only returning starter, the offense may need some time to get things going. The defense returns nine starters, however, and should be one of the best in the Big Country behind lineman Quinten McCarty, linebacker Sam Kallman, and defensive back Morsello Hooker.
Estacado has the weapons to contend with Brownwood this season, namely three players (Bobby Ross, Devoryea Boyd, and Cedric Ross) with Division I scholarship offers. The Lions-Matadors matchup in Lubbock on October 20 could decide the district title.
Big Spring welcomes back 15 starters, nine of them on what could be a very potent offense. Gavin Padron at quarterback, Kavien Ford at running back, and Zeyire Franklin at receiver will be a tough trio for opposing defenses to stop.
Andrews is switching to the Slot-T on offense this year and should also be a contender in the district after going 7-5 and making the playoffs a year ago.
Lake View missed out on the playoffs and did not win a district game last season, but 13 returning starters give the Chiefs hope of breaking through in 2023 as well.
