Hardin-Simmons gets past McMurry in OT + Photos

ABILENE, Texas — Hardin-Simmons (4-1, 2-0) got a touchdown run by Colton Marshall in overtime to get past rival McMurry (2-3, 0-2) 19-16 Saturday night.

The War Hawks blocked two field goals in the game, including one on the last play of regulation to send the game to overtime. In OT McMurry scored first on a field goal to go up 16-13 and HSU answered to tie it, but the War Hawks were called for a penalty for leaping (basically hurdling the center at the line of scrimmage to try to block the kick). The Cowboys scored three plays later to knock off McMurry for the ninth straight time.

Former Cooper Cougar Noah Garcia ran for 65 yards and a score and Marshall, a Hawley product, added 49 and the game winning score. Anson grad Drew Hagler led McMurry with 48 yards rushing and a touchdown.

AJ Hawkins got his second start for the injured Gaylon Glynn and competed 22 of 29 passes for 185 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He also ran for a game high 84 yards. Tailon Garrett was the leading HSU receiver with nine grabs for 99 yards. KJ Peoples added seven for 47 and a touchdown.

Jess Hoel went 14-18 for 175 yards with a touchdown and a pick for the War Hawks. Kristopher Martin caught two balls for 86 yards, including a 58-yard touchdown.

HSU outgained McMurry 413 to 294, rushing for 228 yards and passing for 185. The War Hawks ran for 116 and threw for 178.

Sy Johnson was the leading tackler for McMurry with 11, while Demarcus Coleman topped HSU with six and had an interception.

The Cowboys will host Texas Lutheran next week for Homecoming, while the War Hawks will visit East Texas Baptist.
