That’s a Wrap: A Look Back at 2022

The 2022 season turned out to be a fantastic one for the Big Country, as Hawley, Albany and Westbrook (and Benjamin if you say they are in the Big Country, which many do) all brought home state titles, Loraine came up a game short and Cisco and Wylie made runs to the quarterfinals.

Here’s a look at some of the best of a season that won’t soon be forgotten.

BLITZ PICKS FINALY TALLY — 429-513, 83.6%

I whiffed on Albany/Mart (as many did) but got the other three state title games correct for a final very respectable Blitz Picks mark of 83.6% this season.

BEST GAMES

I’m coming at this from a sheer enjoyment/nail-biting point of view. I honestly think I could have picked five Wylie Bulldog games as they played close game after close game and completed comeback after cardiac comeback. Here’s hoping I didn’t miss any obvious ones, and feel free to argue away with my picks.

5 — Cooper 41, San Angelo Central 38 OT

Chris Warren scrambled for a while and found Malik Jackson on a 22-yard pass in overtime to lead the Coogs past the Bobcats.

4 — Westbrook 59, Rankin 58

Cedric Ware scored with 42 seconds left on the clock to lead the eventual state champs past Rankin for the first time in 2022 back in week three.

3 — Wylie 50, Colleyville Heritage 40

The Bulldogs scored 20 points in the final five minutes to turn a 40-30 deficit into a victory in the area round of the playoffs. KJ Long found Harrison Heighten for an 11-yard touchdown with three seconds to play to put the Bulldogs up 44-40.

2 — San Angelo Central 63, Wylie 61

The Bulldogs were on the other end of a great game in this one, falling in a shootout to the Bobcats on an answered prayer with no time left on the clock.

1 — Hawley 36, Cisco 33

The Bearcats got past the Loboes in the most anticipated regular season game in the Big Country this season, scoring with three seconds left on the clock for the win. Cisco led 20-8 at the half, 27-22 heading into the fourth and 33-22 with just under ten minutes to play. Cisco did not trail until the Bearcats scored the final touchdown on a Rodey Hooper to Will Scott three-yard touchdown pass.

Honorable Mention (in no particular order):
Wylie 39, Wichita Falls Rider 38
Wylie 21, Canutillo 18
Wylie 27, Palo Duro 24
Clyde 29, Sweetwater 28
Breckenridge 30, Cisco 27
Jim Ned 22, Rockdale 21
Forsan 21, Stamford 14
Burnet 49, Early 48
Tolar 16, Coleman 6
Windthorst 26, Haskell 20
Irion County 104, May 91
Cherokee 36, Blackwell 30

BEST STORIES

6 — Wylie turns it around

The Bulldogs had their best season of 5A football, winning a district championship and competing in so many nail-biters along the way. KJ Long came out of nowhere to lead one of the best offenses in the area.

5 — Loraine reaches first state title game

The Bulldogs could not overcome powerful Benjamin, but they proved many folks wrong on their way to state. Playoff wins over Richland Springs (52-0) and Cherokee (24-6) in back-to-back weeks have to be considered among the best victories in program history.

4 — Winters wears purple for Cross Plains

The loss of star player Ryan Hopkins just before the season hit the Buffaloes hard, and many area teams rallied around them to try to help with the pain. Winters was one of the communities that did their part as the Blizzard coaching staff and fans kept their blue apparel in the closet for the season opener and wore purple instead to support Cross Plains. Many rival Big Country teams showed support and helped raise funds for Cross Plains and the Hopkins family as well throughout the season. The Buffs started the season 5-0 and made the playoffs for the eighth straight season.

3 — Westbrook goes back-to-back

The Wildcats put a week five loss to Garden City behind them and rallied to win the 1A D1 state championship for the second straight season. Westbrook played one of the tougher schedules you’ll come across and ended up 14-1 with a mercy-rule win over Abbott in the title game. Westbrook picked up eight wins against teams that ended up in the top 20 of the sixmanfootball.com 1A D1 rankings, and three more against teams that finished in the top 40.

2 — Hawley wins it all for the first time

The Bearcats wrapped up a perfect season with a dominating 54-28 win over Refugio in the 2A D1 state championship game. Hawley, fueled by a state championship game loss in 2021, finished the job this time around to continue the remarkable turnaround for the program under head coach Mitch Ables.

1 — Albany wins one for Coach Faith

Denney Faith finally got to raise the trophy on the final day of the season as Albany got past Mart 41-21 to claim its first state title since 1962. Faith and the Lions had been state runner-up five times in his 36 seasons before breaking through in 2022.

Honorable mention:
Abilene High turns to freshman Brayden Henry at QB, leans on TOUGH defense to make playoff run
Jim Ned turns it around after 0-3 start
Breckenridge earns state ranking, finishes with winning record for first time since 2015
Young Stamford returns to the playoffs
Zephyr goes from 0-10 to 9-2
Rising Star claims district title, returns to postseason
Trent has best season in years

INDIVIDUAL AWARDS

My best of the best for the Big Country:

OFFENSIVE MVP’S

5A: KJ Long, Wylie QB — 3219 yds, 37 TD passing; 636 yds, 7 TD rushing

Long helped turn the Bulldogs into an offensive powerhouse in 2022 and will be missed after such a great senior season.

Best of the rest (in no particular order):
Braden Regala, Wylie WR — 89 rec, 1295 yds, 11 TD; 111 yds, 3 TD rushing
Landry Carlton, Wylie RB — 1061 yds, 8 TD rushing
Bam Rashaw, Abilene High RB — 1060 yds, 13 TD rushing
Brayden Henry, Abilene High QB — 368 yds, 4 TD passing; 435 yds, 4 TD rushing
Chris Warren, Cooper QB — 2469 yds, 22 TD passing; 200 yds, 3 TD rushing
Cam Herron, Cooper WR — 36 rec, 658 yds, 7 TD
D’Andre Ralston, Cooper WR — 51 rec, 562 yds, 7 TD; 199 yds, 4 TD rushing

Photo: Derrick Stuckly/Brownwoodnews.com

4A: Konlyn Anderson, Brownwood RB — 1539 yds, 25 TD rushing

Anderson told me in the preseason he was aiming for 3,000 yards this year. He came up short of that goal, but racked up over 1,700 yards and 25 touchdowns during his senior season.

Best of the rest (in no particular order):
Ike Hall, Brownwood QB — 1837 yds, 17 TD passing; 948 yds, 12 TD rushing
Thad Hinds, Brownwood WR — 44 rec, 846 yds, 8 TD
Easton Stewart, Snyder QB — 1476 yds, 16 TD passing; 92 yds, 1 TD rushing

3A: Troy Doran, Jim Ned QB — 658 yds, 11 TD passing, 1122 yds, 16 TD rushing, 10 rec, 111 yds, 1 TD

After an 0-3 start the Indians moved Doran from receiver to quarterback and the move paid off in a big way. Jim Ned won their next eight games and picked up a district title along the way.

Best of the rest (in no particular order):
Brayden Shipman, Jim Ned RB — 1124 yds, 8 TD rushing
Anson Rodgers, Breckenridge RB — 699 yds, 12 TD rushing; 21 rec, 325 yds, 6 TD
Jerry Lawson, Breckenridge RB — 645 yds, 9 TD rushing
Blake Carr, Clyde QB — 1460 yds, 15 TD; 509 yds, 7 TD rushing (injured midway through season)
Jaxyn Price, Early QB — 2519 yds, 30 TD; 71 yds, 2 TD rushing
Jeremy Brown, Early WR — 62 rec, 1068 yds, 16 TD
Jay Oznick, Eastland WR — 36 rec, 657 yds, 9 TD; 239 yds, 2 TD rushing
Joey Zink, Merkel QB — 1133 yds, 11 TD; 568 yds, 4 TD rushing

2A: Austin Cumpton, Hawley RB — 2176 yds, 44 TD rushing

This was a tough one between Cumpton and Hunter Long, but I’ll give Cumpton the edge courtesy of two head-to-head wins for Hawley over Cisco. Cumpton bounced back in a big way from an injury in the playoffs a year ago and helped lead the Bearcats to their first state championship.

Best of the rest (in no particular order):
Hunter Long, Cisco QB — 1446 yds, 19 TD passing; 2242 yds, 27 TD rushing
Trent Huston, Cisco RB — 1026 yds, 15 TD rushing
Cade Gayle, Cisco WR — 31 rec, 668 yds, 10 TD; 262 yds, 3 TD rushing
Rodey Hooper, Hawley QB — 3388 yds, 35 TD passing; 253 yds, 4 TD rushing
Diontay Ramon, Hawley WR — 53 rec, 1204 yds, 9 TD
Chandlin Myers, Hawley WR — 37 rec, 680 yds, 8 TD
Will Scott, Hawley WR — 44 rec, 739 yds, 9 TD
Kason O’Shields, Hawley WR — 41 rec, 737 yds, 8 TD
Hayden Henager, Stamford RB — 1003 yds, 5 TD rushing; 25 rec, 437 yds, 5 TD
Ryland Gentry, Coleman RB — 1017 yds, 19 TD
Jadin Jackson, Coleman QB — 1273 yds, 19 TD passing; 848 yds, 10 TD rushing
Guy Powell, Bangs RB — 2040 yds, 25 TD rushing; 8 rec, 118 yds, 4 TD
Cole Chapman, Albany QB — 1555 yds, 19 TD passing; 568 yds, 7 TD rushing (missed four games)
Adam Hill, Albany RB — 1526 yds, 24 TD rushing; 23 rec, 449 yds, 8 TD
Coy Lefevre, Albany RB — 1139 yds, 23 TD rushing; 23 rec, 378 yds, 5 TD (missed four games)
Seth Wilcox, Roscoe WR — 34 rec, 682 yds, 8 TD (injured midway through season)
Noah Moses, Cross Plains RB — 1088 yds, 12 TD rushing; 12 rec, 90 yds

1A: Cedric Ware, Westbrook RB — 1900 yds, 47 TD rushing; 21 rec, 308 yds, 7 TD

No surprise here, as the state six-man player of the year resides in the Big Country. Ware battled injuries this year and still came close to matching his touchdown numbers (58 last season, 54 this season) while helping the Wildcats earn their second straight state title.

*Best of the rest (in no particular order):
Grayson Jeffrey, Westbrook RB — 1408 yds, 26 TD rushing; 9 rec, 112 yds, 2 TD
Tyson Digby, Hermleigh SB
Zane Allen, Ira TE — 31 rec, 614 yds, 14 TD
Bryton Partain, Ira QB — 631 yds, 12 TD passing; 1036 yds, 21 TD rushing; 4 rec, 50 yds, 1 TD
Cooper Bowen, Highland RB — 1258 yds, 21 TD rushing; 16 rec, 325 yds, 7 TD
Jordan Daniel, Rotan RB — 1183 yds, 15 TD rushing; 10 rec, 171 yds, 3 TD; 190 yds, 3 TD passing
Joseph Rainey, Gorman RB — 1068 yds, 17 TD rushing; 5 rec, 173 yds, 2 TD
Damian Salinas, May RB
Chris Pannell, Rule SB
AJ Williams, Loraine RB — 1674 yds, 37 TD rushing
Davion Walthall, Loraine Utility — 1437 yds, 24 TD rushing,
10 rec, 191 yds, 7 TD
Kyler Cummings, Blackwell WR
Jake Bell, Rising Star QB
Jayden Millican, Zephyr RB
Levi Vasquez, Blanket FB
Ty Armstrong, Abilene Christian RB
*Unfortunately stats for 1A teams are sometimes harder to come by than the 11-man game. I did my best to not miss anyone worthy.

DEFENSIVE MVP’S

Photo: @AbileneClips

5A: Kenneth Johnson, Abilene High LB — 64 tkl, 14 tfl, 11 sacks, 3 ff, 1 fr

Maybe I’m biased from watching the Eagles play all season, but Johnson proved to be nearly unblockable and was a menace to opponents in passing situations. The 11 sacks on record on MaxPreps may be a little low as it seemed like he was in the backfield time after time in 2022.

Best of the rest (in no particular order):
Noah Hatcher, Abilene High DB — 83 tkl, 3 tfl, 7 pbu
Ryan Price, Wylie DE
Landen Null, Wylie LB
Za’Kyree Sims, Cooper DT
Carson England, Cooper LB
Johnathan Vanwinkle, Cooper LB
Michael Ramis, Cooper DB

Photo: Derrick Stuckly/Brownwoodnews.com

4A: Chance Jones, Brownwood LB — 123 tkl, 5 sacks, 1 int

Jones made the fulltime switch to linebacker this season after starting under center for the Lions in previous years. He made a huge difference for a Brownwood squad that improved its defense immensely in 2022.

Best of the rest (in no particular order):
Sam Kallman, Brownwood LB — 134 tkl, 5 sacks
Quinten McCarty, Brownwood DL — 128 tkl, 17 tfl, 2 sacks
Dyllan Angeley, Snyder DB — 64 tkl, 2 tfl, 3 int
Korda Moore, Sweetwater DE — 87 tkl, 21 tfl, 2 sacks, 1 ff

Photo: Brownwoodnews.com

3A: Caleb McCullough, Early LB — 113 tkl, 31 tfl, 12 sacks, 1 int, 6 ff, 2 fr

McCullough’s monster stats give him the edge, slightly, over Jim Ned’s Tanner Hussman, who was my preseason 3A Defensive player of the year, and Merkel’s Elijah Olivarez. McCullough was in the backfield all season and helped the Longhorns battle with Wall for a district title and improve greatly on defense as the season progressed.

Best of the rest (in no particular order):
Tanner Hussman, Jim Ned LB — 96 tkl, 9 tfl, 1 sack, 1 int
Elijah Olivarez, Merkel LB — 161 tkl, 20 tfl, 3 sacks, 1 fr
Zeke Castillo, Breckenridge LB — 131 tkl, 5 tfl, 2 sacks
Alexis Franco, Breckenridge DB — 124 tkl, 6 tfl, 3 int, 7 pbu
Kaleb Ozuna, Early LB — 134 tkl, 13 tfl, 2 sacks, 2 ff

2A: Hez Parker, Hawley LB — 149 tkl, 18 tfl, 3 sacks, 3 int, 2 fr, 6 ff

The 2A D1 state championship game MVP put together a fantastic season, racking up nearly 150 tackles as one of many stud defensive players for the Bearcats.

Best of the rest (in no particular order):
Will Scott, Hawley DB — 113 tkl, 11 tfl, 4 int, 2 ff, 2 fr
Austin Cumpton, Hawley LB — 113 tkl, 16 tfl, 4 int, 4 fr
Kason O’Shields, Hawley DB — 74 tkl, 4 int, 2 fr, 2 ff
Tre Brackeen, Cisco LB
Kaston Vega, Stamford LB — 112 tkl, 12 tfl, 4 sacks, 2 fr
Corey Layne, Anson LB
Ryland Gentry, Coleman LB
Garrett Smith, Coleman DL
Keygan Pitts, Bangs LB — 119 tkl, 3 tfl, 1 fr
Adam Hill, Albany LB — 105 tkl, 22.5 tfl, 8.5 sacks3 ff, 3 fr
Coy Lefevre, Albany LB — 84 tkl, 5 tfl, 4 int, 1 sack, 2 ff
Wyatt Windham, Albany DB — 140 tkl, 8.5 tfl, 5 int
London Fuentes, Albany DB — 54 tkl, 7 int, 4 fr
Luke Peacock, Haskell DL

Photo: SMcCowen Photography

1A: Pahton Dominguez, Westbrook DL — 96 tkl, 28.5 tfl, 7 sacks, 4 int, 4 ff, 1 fr

Dominguez was chosen as the state defensive MVP and is the choice in the Big Country as well. Dominguez was nearly impossible to block, finishing second on the state champs in tackles and racking up nearly 30 tackles for loss.

Best of the rest (in no particular order):
Parker Matlock, Westbrook DB — 98 tkl, 15 tfl, 6 int
Grayson Jeffrey, Westbrook DB — 58 tkl, 8 int
Zane Allen, Ira DL — 70 tkl, 14 tfl, 2 int
Bubba Byrne, Highland DB — 111 tkl, 1 int
Nash Guthery, Gorman DB — 98 tkl, 11 tfl, 5 int
Damian Salinas, May LB
Davion Walthall, Loraine DE — 120 tkl,
22 tfl, 12 sacks, 7 fr, 6 ff
Kyler Cummings, Blackwell DL
Dakota Higgins, Rising Star DL
Brayden Day, Blanket LB
AJ Williams, Loraine DB — 69 tkl, 6 int
Malaki Williams, Loraine DB — 73 tkl, 5 int
Wrangler Little, Loraine LB — 127 tkl, 10 tfl, 2 fr, 1 ff
Ty Armstrong, Abilene Christian DB
Davis Patteson, Abilene Christian DB
