Week 3 Rewind
OFF THE TOP
Things that caught my attention this week:
Midland Legacy QB Marcos Davila is VERY good. He torched the Abilene secondary for 5 TD passes in the 56-20 Rebel win.
Cooper gets win #1 of the year in an OT thriller over San Angelo Central.
Great showing for Wylie as they came up just short of beating Lubbock Cooper 33-28.
Breckenridge holds off Cisco 30-27 to get to 3-0. The Buckaroos are for real.
Bangs blows out Grape Creek 53-6 to get win number one.
Coleman and Hawley keep rolling with wins over Brady and Eastland.
Clyde moves to 2-1 with a 41-21 win against Merkel.
Hamlin blasts Crosbyton 33-0 to get to 2-1. The Pipers scored more points tonight than they did the entire 2021 season.
Albany, Stamford and Cross Plains stay perfect.
Sweetwater earns win number one by knocking off Pecos.
#1 Westbrook scores with under a minute left to beat Rankin 59-58.
Loraine wins a battle of ranked teams over Klondike 60-40.
Aspermont, May, Trent, Ira and Rule all also stay undefeated in the 1A ranks.
Congrats to David Finch for earning his first coaching victory in Lueders-Avoca’s shut out win over Olfen.
BIG COUNTRY A TO Z
Abilene High (1-2) scored first at Midland Legacy, but the Rebels answered with 49 straight by halftime and led 56-7 in the third quarter before the Eagles scored late to give the game a 56-20 final. Legacy quarterback Marcos Davila, a three-star recruit who has college offers from the likes of TCU, West Virginia and Texas Tech, avoided the Eagle blitz all night and completed 17 of 20 passes for 329 yards and five touchdowns. The Eagle offense put together a great drive to get the game started and found the end zone on a 36-yard Dylan Slack to Tim Outlaw touchdown pass, but saw the Rebels answer and then recover two pooch kickoffs in a row that the Warbirds could not handle. Legacy took advantage of the short field and never looked back on their way to the win.
Abilene Christian (1-1) was off this week. The Panthers return to action Saturday at former district foe Lubbock Kingdom Prep.
#1 Albany (3-0) had to battle to pick up a 27-13 road win at Seymour in a matchup of unbeaten teams. Adam Hill ran for 24 and 63-yard touchdowns to give the Lions a 14-0 second quarter lead, but the Panthers pulled within 14-7 at the half and 14-13 midway through the third. Albany answered with a London Fuentes touchdown and a third touchdown from Hill, this time a 65-yard catch, to pull away for good. He ran for 163 yards in the game and the Lions outgained Seymour 389 to 361. Jayden Lucas led the team in tackles with nine and Coy Cauble added eight. Fuentes had four tackles and an interception.
Anson played its first home game of the season but came up short 24-21 against Dublin to fall to 0-3. The Tigers and Lions were tied at 14 at the half and Anson took a 21-17 lead in the third, but Dublin scored the final touchdown of the game to pick up its first victory of the season.
Aspermont stayed perfect on the year (3-0) with a 56-8 victory over Moran in the Hornets home opener. Aspermont is 3-0 for the first time since 2015 when they won their first six games of the season.
Baird (1-2) came up shy at Robert Lee, falling to the Steers 48-36. The Steers improve to 3-0 on the season. The Bears trailed by 28 at the half but kept fighting to make the game go the distance.
Ballinger dropped to 0-3 with a 32-14 home loss to unbeaten Stamford. The Bulldogs led 24-0 in the third quarter and held off the Bearcats late to move to 3-0 for the first time since 2018.
Bangs (1-2) found the win column in a big way with a 53-6 road win at Grape Creek. The Dragons got 188 yards and three touchdowns rushing from star running back Guy Powell in the dominating effort. Keygan Pitts led the Dragons with 12 tackles. Bangs avenged a 17-14 district loss to the Eagles in 2021.
Blackwell fell to 1-2 on the season as they dropped a 52-32 decision to rival Highland. Highland (1-2) led 20-18 at halftime and pulled away in the second half to earn victory number one on the season. The Hornets have now beaten Blackwell three years in a row.
Blanket dominated 1A D1 Eden 50-0 to improve to 2-1 on the year. The Tigers had no problem in their home opener, as Brayden Day led the attack with 139 yards and three touchdowns rushing.
Breckenridge outlasted Cisco (2-1) 30-27 to improve to 3-0 in 2022. The Buckaroos dominated through three quarters, taking a 30-7 lead into the final 12 minutes. But the Loboes did not go down without a fight and nearly pulled off the huge comeback. Breckenridge recovered an onside kick with under a minute to go to earn their first victory over the Loboes since 1999. Anson Rodgers ran for 63 yards and two touchdowns and Jerry Lawson ran for 78 yards. Cisco’s Hunter Long ran for 107 yards and three scores and added 147 yards and a touchdown through the air.
Brookesmith met Mount Calm in Jonesboro and got shut out 46-0. The Mustangs fall to 0-3 on the season.
Brownwood improved to 2-1 with a hard-fought 33-20 win at Burnet. The Lions fell behind 14-0 in the first quarter but outscored the Bulldogs 17-0 in the second and 33-6 over the final three quarters to pull away for the win. Konlyn Anderson ran for 132 yards and a touchdown and Ike Hall completed 14 of 20 passes for 246 yards and a score. Thad Hinds was his top target, catching 9 passes for 185 yards and a touchdown.
Clyde claimed a 41-21 victory over Merkel (1-2) to improve to 2-1 on the year. The Bulldogs put together their best offensive effort so far this season, racking up 502 yards against a solid Badger defense that had only given up 20 points over the first two weeks of the season. Blake Carr continues to shine so far in 2022, throwing for 311 yards and four touchdowns to four different receivers and also running for 106 and another score to lead the Bulldog offense.
Coleman continues to roll early in the season, blasting Brady 56-24 to improve to 3-0. Coleman led just 20-12 at the half but put it all together over the final 24 minutes to drop the Bulldogs to 0-3. Jadin Jackson threw for 185 yards and a score and ran for 148 and two touchdowns, while Ryland Gentry added 133 and three touchdowns. Gentry also had an interception return for a touchdown to make it a happy homecoming for the Bluecats.
Colorado City fell to 0-3 on the season with a 26-7 loss in its first home game of the year. Christoval (2-1) jumped out to a 14-0 lead and the Wolves could not get back in the game.
Cooper is in the win column after an exciting 41-38 overtime victory over San Angelo Central (1-2). The Cougars (1-2) fell behind 10-0 in the first quarter but rallied by the halftime break to lead 28-20. Cooper extended the lead to 35-20 but saw the Bobcats score two touchdowns in the final five minutes to send the game to overtime. Central kicked a field goal, but Cooper came up with the game-winning touchdown when Chris Warren avoided the rush and found Malik Jackson in the back of the end zone from 22-yards out. Warren threw for 177 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for 61 yards and a score. Daniel Bray paced the Coogs on the ground with 116 yards, including a 66-yard touchdown run to close out the first half.
Cross Plains is still unbeaten after a 33-7 road win at Hico Friday night. The Buffaloes led 21-7 at the half and cruised from there to improve to 3-0. Kade Purvis threw for 146 yards and three touchdowns and Ryan Reed caught all three as part of a six catch, 89 yard effort. Riley Conlee led the defense with 12 tackles and Noah Moses added 11. Moses also ran for 119 yards and a touchdown in the win.
Early (1-2) dropped its second straight contest, rallying late but coming up short at Comanche 49-40. The Longhorns came out hot, leading 14-0 after one, but the Indians scored five second quarter touchdowns to go up 35-14 at the half. Comanche led 49-34 after three and held off Early in the fourth to improve to 3-0. Jaxyn Price threw for 347 yards and a pair of touchdowns, 10 completions and 214 yards of that to Jeremy Brown. Comanche outgained the Longhorns 475 to 392.
Eastland (0-3) played better than they did in a week two loss at Clyde, but ultimately did not have enough in the tank to top powerful Hawley (3-0) in a 36-12 decision. The Bearcats led it 14-0 at halftime and 28-0 before the Mavericks got on the board late in the game. Austin Cumpton (who already has 482 yards and eight touchdowns rushing through three games) has been stellar so far in 2022. He led the way with 247 yards and four touchdown runs to lead the Hawley attack. Rodey Hooper added a rushing score and threw for 187 yards. Will Scott caught eight passes for 126 yards. Cumpton and Hez Parker paced the defense with 13 tackles and an interception apiece. Diontay Ramon was a force on the edge with six takedowns and a pair of sacks. Scott and Kason O’Shields also reached double-digits with ten tackles.
Gorman is now 3-0 after a 50-22 win at Blum. The Panthers earn their second straight victory over Blum in their first full non-45 game of the season.
Hamlin made it a happy homecoming with a 33-0 shut out win over Crosbyton. As mentioned above, the Pipers scored more in this contest than they did the entire 2021 season and have now won two in a row after a season opening loss to Stamford. Hamlin led just 6-0 after one quarter but put a pair of touchdowns on the board in the second quarter to have a 20-0 lead at halftime on the way to the win. Swenson Benavides threw for 125 yards and two touchdowns and also added 161 yards and two more scores in the rushing game. Colten Spalding racked up 107 yards rushing and caught three passes for 66 yards.
Haskell dropped to 1-2 with a 34-7 home loss to Olney. The Cubs improve to 3-0 on the season with the victory. Olney led 20-7 at the break and did not allow the Indians another score over the final two quarters.
Hermleigh (2-1) came up short for the first time in 2022, falling on the road at Buena Vista 80-59. The loss snapped a 12-game regular season winning streak for the Cardinals. Buena Vista won for the first time this season after losses to state ranked Irion County and Rankin.
Ira is 3-0 after a 50-33 win over Jayton, the #4 ranked team in 1A Division II. The Bulldogs led 14-8 after one and 30-20 at the half on their way to handing the Jaybirds their second loss to a 1A D1 team.
Jim Ned battled and played outstanding defense, but could not get any offense going in a 3-0 loss at Wall. The Indians fall to 0-3 on the season since 2016, but put together their best effort of the season in defeat. Wall (2-1) kicked a field goal with just over eight minutes left in the game for the only score of the contest.
Loraine is off to a 3-0 start and earned its biggest victory of the season thus far Friday night. The Bulldogs knocked off #8 Klondike 60-40 on the road and are perfect through three games for the second time in three years. AJ Williams had another great night, completing 5 of 6 passes for 72 yards and a touchdown and adding 147 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. Davion Walthall added 105 yards and two touchdowns rushing and another receiving. Johnathan Lujan caught three passes for 53 yards and a score. Walthall led the way with 15 tackles, three for loss, while Wrangler Little racked up 14, Williams and Josiah Luhan added 11 and Malaki Williams chipped in ten. AJ Williams also picked off two passes on defense.
Lueders-Avoca (1-2) earned victory number one for new head coach David Finch with a 49-0 shut out of Olfen.
May outlasted unbeaten Knox City on the road 81-58 to improve to 3-0 on the season. The Tigers racked up over 600 yards of total offense in the game and put 66 points on the board by halftime. Damian Salinas ran for 167 yards and two touchdowns and led the Tiger defense with 19 tackles. Luke McKenzie ran for five touchdowns and threw for three more, accumulating 376 yards running and passing.
Paint Creek is now 2-1 after a 40-29 win at Lohn Friday night. The Pirates put a shutout loss to Ira behind them to win for the second time in three games.
Ranger could not get the offense going in a 42-6 home loss to Perrin-Whitt. The Bulldogs fall to 0-3 on the season.
Rising Star (2-1) got back in the win column with a 48-18 win at Morgan. The Wildcats were led by Jake Bell, who recorded nine tackles on defense and ran for 88 yards and two touchdowns on offense.
Roby had a rough go of it in a 57-0 loss at #9 Irion County. The Lions drop to 0-3 on the season.
Roscoe did not get to play for a second straight week. The Plowboys (1-0) had a bye in week two and had TLCA Midland cancel on them midweek for week three. Roscoe will return to action at home against Sterling City Friday night.
Rotan (1-1) earned victory number one of 2022 with a 45-0 shut out of Woodson. The Yellowhammers were up 32-0 at the half and scored twice in the third quarter to put the game away.
Rule rolled past Patton Springs 67-19 to get to 2-0 on the year.
Santa Anna had to hit the field Saturday due to a referee shortage but it did not make a difference as the Mountaineers won again, this time topping Nueces Canyon on the road 68-20. The game was tied at six after one and the Mountaineers were up just 22-20 at the break, but dominated the second half — outscoring the Panthers 46-0 to get the win.
Snyder played up against Canyon Randall and came up out on the short end of a 41-6 decision to fall to 2-1. The Tigers fell behind 21-0 in the first quarter and could never close the gap. The Raiders, dropping from 5A to 4A this season, led 28-6 at the half and move to 2-1 on the season.
Sweetwater earned its first victory of the season in a 32-16 decision over Pecos. The Mustangs (1-2) grabbed a 9-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back to beat the Eagles for the 26th time in 28 meetings. Chris Gomez threw for 184 yards and three touchdowns, two of those to Jadyn Forbes.
TLCA Abilene gave up at least 80 points in a game for the second time this season, falling at Sterling City 83-19. TLCA Abilene is now 0-3 in its first season of 11-man football.
Trent moves to 3-0 with a 78-33 home win over Harrold. The Gorillas are off to their best start in ten years. Hayden Payne had a great night through the air, completing 17 of 27 passes for 285 yards and six touchdowns. Lance Swinney caught three of them and Breyden Lewis hauled in two scoring strikes. Lewis also ran for 58 yards and two touchdowns. Swinney, Ian Harris and Brian Crouch each recorded ten tackles to lead the Trent defense. Congrats to head coach Chris Ellison for being named the 1A Coach of the Week by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football a week ago!
Westbrook squeaked past Rankin 59-58 in a matchup of #1 against #5 in 1A Division I. The two heavyweights traded punches all night: the Wildcats led 6-2 after one, 26-18 at the half and 40-34 after three but the Red Devils grabbed a 58-52 lead with just over three minutes to play. Cedric Ware found the end zone for the final time with 42 seconds to play, however, and Westbrook escaped with the one-point win. Ware rolled up 251 yards and five touchdowns on the ground and also caught two touchdown passes. Parker Matlock threw for 92 yards and three touchdowns but also tossed a pair of interceptions. Ware was the leading tackler with 14, followed by Pahton Dominguez with ten. Matlock made up for his interceptions thrown by picking off a pair of passes on defense.
Winters could not win a second straight nail biter, falling 36-34 on the road at TLCA San Angelo. The Blizzards (1-2) put more points on the board than they had the first two games of the season combined, but could not get a key stop late to beat the Eagles. Alejandro Garcia ran for 103 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the game.
Wylie fell from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 33-28 home loss to Lubbock Cooper. The Bulldogs and Pirates were tied at 14 at the half, but Cooper took a 27-21 lead into the fourth that they extended to 33-21 and held on. K.J. Long threw for 309 yards and a touchdowns and the Bulldog offense outgained the Pirates 538-396. Landry Carlton had another strong outing, running for 107 yards and Braden Regala added 38 yards and two touchdowns on two carries. Hunter Hood was the top Bulldog receiver with six grabs for 136 yards.
Zephyr is over .500 thanks to an easy 54-6 win over Waco Eagle Christian Academy. The Bulldogs (2-1) led 22-0 after one quarter and put enough points on the board in the second quarter to end the game by halftime. Jayden Millican ran for 100 yards and five touchdowns to lead the offensive attack, while Tripp Ballard led the defense with nine tackles. Millican added 11.
STILL PERFECT
Cisco, Hermleigh, Snyder and Wylie fell from the ranks of the unbeaten after week three losses. 16 other teams remain unbeaten!
