Week 5 Rewind

OFF THE TOP

Things that caught my attention Friday night:

  • San Angelo Central got a Sports Center Top 10 type miracle win over Wylie 63-61. What a shootout! Over 700 yards of total offense for Wylie in this one.

  • Brownwood dominated a very good Waco Connally team on the road 52-21. The Lions seem to be the real deal. They’ll get a shot at proving it next week against rival Stephenville.

  • Hawley, Cisco and Stamford started district play with wins over Anson, Colorado City and Winters by a combined 157-12. They look like the heavy favorites in District 4-2A D1. Olney is also unbeaten but was on their bye this week.

  • Abilene High dominated Monterey 37-7 to kickoff district play. The Eagle defense is legit and the offense is getting better weekly.

  • Make it four wins in a row for Clyde as the Bulldogs sneak past Sweetwater 29-28 on a two-point conversion in OT.

  • Cross Plains, Breckenridge, Aspermont and Loraine also stay unbeaten this week.

  • Westbrook’s dream of a perfect season will not happen as they fell to Garden City in a 46-42 upset.

  • Coleman opens district play with a 61-0 win over Goldthwaite. Talk about bouncing back from a loss last week.

  • Early plays up against 4A Burnet and almost pulls off the upset, losing in a 49-48 shootout.

  • Jim Ned seems to be getting on track, blowing out Eastland 48-17 and scoring the same amount of points tonight that they had the first four games of the season.

  • Gorman and Roscoe surprisingly lose at home to fall from the ranks of the unbeatens.

  • Albany plays up against Comanche and comes up just short at home 31-28.

  • Bangs and Hamlin extend their winning streaks. The Pipers to four and the Dragons to three.

  • Trent comes from way behind to beat Paint Creek 53-48.

  • Ira knocks off Klondike in a battle of very good six man teams 64-40.

  • Strawn beat Rotan 105-91!!! What an effort by both teams in such a high scoring contest!

  • Lueders-Avoca will have an interim head coach the rest of the season. David Finch resigned earlier this past week before the Raiders played Harrold.

BIG COUNTRY A TO Z

Abilene High (2-3, 1-0) dominated Lubbock Monterey (0-5, 0-1) in the district opener for both squads.

It really could have been a much bigger margin, but the Monterey defense dug in against the Eagle offense with its back against the wall a few times. Nevertheless, the Eagles outgained the Plainsmen 320-180, which is both the most yardage Abilene High has gained in a game this season and the fewest yards they’ve given up in a game.

Antoine Rashaw had his best game of the season, running for 128 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Dylan Slack threw for 168 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Brelon Badon went off at receiver with a five catch, 118 yard effort that included a 63-yard touchdown for the first score of the game, and the Eagle defense nearly kept Monterey under 100 total yards for the night — allowing them a 71-yard touchdown in the final minutes to pad their stats.

Kevin Williams returned an interception 70-yards to close the first half scoring and give the Eagles a 23-0 lead at the half.

Abilene Christian (3-1, 1-0) cruised past Keller Harvest 50-0 in its district opener Saturday.

The Panthers have won two straight after a 14-point loss at Hermleigh in week two.

#1 Albany (3-2) played without some key starters again, quarterback Cole Chapman among them, and almost knocked off 3A Division II Comanche (4-1) anyway.

The Lions took a 14-0 lead in the first quarter but saw the Indians rally from there. Albany outgained the Indians 360-291, but five turnovers certainly did not help the cause.

Adam Hill paced the Lions with 128 yards and two touchdowns rushing and Cason Fairchild caught eight passes for 146 yards and a touchdown. London Fuentes filled in at quarterback, throwing for 172 yards and two touchdowns but also tossing three interceptions.

Sawyer Wilkerson, the sensational Comanche sophomore, ran for 181 yards and two touchdowns.

Albany’s rough non-district schedule should only help them going forward. They start district play in two weeks against 4-1 Miles.

Anson proved to be no match for powerful Hawley as the state-ranked Bearcats torched their rivals 55-0.

The Bearcats (5-0, 1-0) earned their biggest victory of the season and have still only allowed five touchdowns all season.

Hawley led 35-0 by halftime in this one and cruised to the win. Austin Cumpton picked up 140 yards and two touchdowns rushing, while Rodey Hooper threw for 185 yards and three touchdowns, one each to Diontay Ramon (2 rec, 12 yds), Kason O’Shields (2 rec, 56 yds) and Will Scott (4 rec, 97 yds).

Aspermont continues to roll, winning at Rule 84-47 Friday night to get to 5-0 on the season. The Bobcats fall to 2-2 with the loss.

The Hornets put together their best scoring game of the season, besting the 68 they put on the board against Lueders-Avoca the week before.

The Bobcats have dropped two in a row after a 2-0 start to the Caleb Barkowsky era.

Baird (2-2) did not play this week. The Bears will finally get to play their home opener this week against Amarillo PCHEA.

Ballinger continued the struggle that is 2022 thus far, falling at Mason (4-1) 55-0 Friday night.

The Bearcats fall to 0-5 and suffer a shut out loss for the second time this season.

They only trailed 14-0 at the half but the Punchers pulled away in the second half.

Bangs (3-2, 1-0) is on a three-game winning streak and is off to a good start in district play thanks to a 49-21 win at De Leon.

Guy Powell proved to be unstoppable, picking up 323 yards and five touchdowns on the ground. He returned a kickoff for a score as well and racked up 11 tackles on defense. Ethan Ethridge led the Dragons with 15 tackles and Keygan Pitts added 13.

Blackwell blew out Brookesmith 56-6 in a Saturday night homecoming victory for the Hornets.

Blackwell (2-3) led 35-0 after one quarter and ended up picking up the win by halftime.

The Mustangs fall to 0-5.

Blanket (4-1) defended the home field and took care of Moran (0-5) 56-0 Friday night.

The Tigers were led by Brayden Day’s 161 yard, five touchdown rushing effort. Levi Vasquez added 103 yards and two scores.

Moran was limited to 73 yards of total offense, while Blanket, now winners of four in a row after a season opening loss to Rising Star, picked up 303.

Breckenridge moved to 5-0 with a 56-17 homecoming win over Benbrook in the first ever meeting between the two schools.

The Buckaroos got a fight from the Bobcats in the first half, only leading 14-7 after one. But the Bucks put together a huge second quarter, putting three touchdowns on the board to take a 35-10 lead into the halftime break on the way to their fifth straight victory to start the season.

They’ll open district play in two weeks at 1-4 Iowa Park.

Photo: Derrick Stuckly/Brownwoodnews.com

Brownwood made sure they’d stay in the 4A DII top ten for at least one more week with a 52-21 win at Waco Connally.

The Lions were down 14-7 late in the first quarter but outscored the Cadets 17-0 in the second quarter to build a 24-14 halftime lead. They scored the first two touchdowns of the third quarter as well to go up 38-14 before Connally got on the scoreboard again.

Brownwood went over the 50-point mark for the second time this season and outgained the Cadets 442-297 in the victory.

Ike Hall threw for 157 yards and two touchdowns, both to Thad Hinds as part of a five catch, 92 yard night, and also ran for 123 yards a pair of touchdowns. Konlyn Anderson racked up 113 yards and two scores.

Photo: Gary Stennett

Cisco (4-1, 1-0) kicked off district action in a great way, knocking off Colorado City (0-5, 0-1) 54-0.

The Loboes led 20-0 after one and 33-0 by halftime and cruised to the victory to keep the Wolves winless so far in 2022.

Hunter Long racked up 228 total yards and three touchdowns to lead the Loboes as Cisco outgained Colorado City 438 to 131.

Photo and video below courtesty Hudson Bryan

Clyde (4-1) won for the fourth straight time, getting past Sweetwater (1-4) 29-28 in overtime in one of two crazy games on the night.

The first oddity was halftime coming midway through the second quarter when the stadium lights did not fire up. Halftime came early as they got them fixed and the final 8:20 of the second quarter was played as part of the second half.

The teams were tied at 21 after regulation, thanks to Clyde converting on a fake punt on 4th down that resulted in a 51-yard touchdown pass from Blake Carr to Dai’Jon Booker with just over five minutes to go. The Mustangs scored first and kicked an extra point to go up 28-21, but Clyde answered then went for two and the win.

Carr threw for 253 yards and three touchdowns (with two interceptions) and ran for 61 yards and another score. Dai’Jon Booker, Landon Yates and Josh Hutton each caught touchdown passes for Clyde.

Four players threw passes for the Mustangs, including touchdown tosses by Jadyn Forbes and Tyler Munoz. Jamarian Amos led Sweetwater on the ground with 88 yards and a touchdown.

There was even a scuffle after the action ended and the teams shook hands.

Photo: Colemantoday.com

Coleman (4-1, 1-0) had no problem with Goldthwaite (0-5, 0-1) Friday night, clipping the Eagles 61-0 in the district opener for both squads.

Five Bluecats scored on the night, led by Ryland Gentry with 209 yards and four rushing touchdowns.

Coleman limited Goldthwaite to just 17 yards of offense in a dominating effort, while going for nearly 500 yards of their own.

Cooper (2-3) saw a two-game winning streak come to an end at the hands of unbeaten Odessa Permian 56-28.

The Cougars fell behind 14-0 early and pulled within seven points four times but could not overcome the Panthers (5-0) on the road.

Cooper got a 99-yard kickoff return from Cam Herron and forced four fumbles, but could not stop the Permian offense, who racked up 541 total yards, 311 of those via the run. Herron also added a 52-yard touchdown run in the game.

Juzstyce Lara scored four touchdowns to lead Permian.

Photo: Cross Plains Athletic Booster

Cross Plains moved to 5-0 with a 45-20 neutral site victory over Smyer in Snyder.

The Buffaloes led 25-12 at the half and cruised from there to stay perfect. The Bobcats fall to 1-4.

Photo: Mike Jones/Brownwoodnews.com

Early and Burnet put on an offensive show and Longhorns came up just shy of an upset win, falling 49-48.

Early (2-3) outgained the Bulldogs (3-2) 497-456 but gave up a touchdown and two-point conversion in the final minute to come up short.

Jaxyn Price threw for 354 yards and five touchdowns and ran for 40 yards and a score. Jeremy Brown caught eight passes for 136 yards and three touchdowns and Griffin Cheslock led the Longhorns with 84 yards and a touchdown rushing.

Eastland dropped to 0-5 with a 48-17 loss at Jim Ned (2-3).

The Indians put together their best offensive performance of the season by far, picking up over 500 yards of total offense and leading 27-3 by the end of the first quarter.

Troy Doran made his second straight start at quarterback and tossed four touchdowns passes, two to Carter Wood. Gray Beasley added 162 yards rushing.

The Mavericks now hope to turn things around after the bye week when they begin district play at Jacksboro.

Gorman lost for the first time this season, falling to 4-1 with a somewhat surprising 62-28 loss at home to Milford.

The Panthers were favored to win by 45 according to sixmanfootball.com and 36 according to Dave Campbell’s, but that is why they play the games.

Photo: Gary Ford

Hamlin picked up its fourth victory in a row, winning a 14-12 slugfest against Quanah (1-3).

The Pied Pipers (4-1) never trailed in this one, leading 7-0 after one and 7-6 after three quarters. Hamlin added another score to go up 14-6 in the fourth and held off the Indians two-point try late in the game that could have tied it at 14.

Haskell opened District 7-2A Division II play with a tough 26-20 overtime home loss to Windthorst.

The Indians (2-3, 0-1) trailed 20-14 with just under three minutes to play and tied it up on a Trevor Henry touchdown run. Unfortunately, they missed the extra point that could have won the game and ended up going to overtime. The Trojans missed a short field goal as time expired that would have won it for them.

In OT, the Trojans got a three-yard Logan Cope touchdown run to make it 26-20. Haskell blocked the extra point.

The Indians pass on fourth down on their overtime possession fell incomplete and the Trojans escaped with the win.

Henry led the Haskell offense with 130 yards and three touchdowns. Cope threw for 145 yards and a touchdown and ran for 29 and two more for Windthorst.

Hermleigh (3-1) had no issues against Grady, bouncing the Wildcats 62-14 to return to the win column after the bye week.

The Cardinals only had to play one series of the third quarter to complete the mercy rule victory.

Highland hung with Borden County (4-1) but came up on the short end of a 47-40 decision.

The Hornets wrap up a brutal non-district schedule with a 1-4 record.

Photo: SMcCowen Photography

Ira (4-1) returned to its winning ways with a 64-40 home victory over Klondike, the fourth team the Bulldogs have played this season that has been in the top ten at some point.

Ira led 14-0 after one, 32-20 at the half, 48-40 after three quarters and held on for the win by outscoring the Cougars 16-0 in the final ten minutes.

Photo: David Gonzales

Loraine played Thursday night and took care of Sands 60-15 by the half to move to 5-0 on the season.

The Bulldogs attempted just one pass in the game, a 31-yard Davion Walthall touchdown toss to River Gonzales.

AJ Williams ran for 142 yards and four touchdowns and Xander Ybarra added another score.

Wrangler Little was the leading tackler, bringing down seven Mustangs in the contest. Josiah Lujah, Zannon Perez and Walthall each had six. Williams picked off a pass and Lujan recovered two fumbles.

The Bulldogs are ranked as high as number two in the state in some polls and will host #1 Benjamin this week.

Lueders-Avoca knocked off Harrold at home 58-19 to improve to 2-2 on the season.

Raiders head coach David Finch turned in his resignation last week before the game after coaching just three games at Lueders-Avoca.

May (4-0) did not play Friday night after San Marcos Academy cancelled on them. The Tigers visit Burnet Smoking For Jesus this week.

Merkel dropped to 1-4 with a 21-0 loss at Coahoma.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 21-0 lead by the half and never let the Badgers find the end zone.

Merkel suffered its third straight loss and enters the bye week hoping to turn things around in district play.

Photo: Ty & Tab Photography

Paint Creek jumped out to an early, sizable lead at Trent but the Gorillas rallied for a 53-48 homecoming victory to improve to 4-1 on the season.

The Pirates (2-3) led 36-26 at the half but Trent outscored them 27-12 in the second half to earn the victory.

Hayden Payne threw for 182 yards and two touchdowns and caught eight passes for 120 yards and another score.

Brian Crouch completed two passes, both for touchdowns, and also added 54 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

Breyden Lewis hauled in five passes for 100 yards and a touchdown and Braxton Cathey caught four for 94 yards and three scores.

Rising Star (4-1) took care of business on Saturday in a lopsided 70-6 victory over Lohn.

The Wildcats have won three straight games by 40 points or more.

Roby played top-ranked Benjamin closer than the Mustangs other three opponents this season, falling 56-6.

The Lions drop to 0-5 on the season and will be off this week.

Roscoe (3-1) dropped a 60-32 home decision to New Home to fall to taste defeat for the first time this season.

New Home quarterback Caleb Cook cooked the Plowboy secondary, throwing for 546 yards and eight touchdowns in the contest.

The Leopards led just 7-0 after one but outscored Roscoe 34-12 in the second to lead 41-12 halftime.

Jax Watts threw for 359 yards and four touchdowns. Seth Wilcox caught ten of those passes for 238 yards and three scores.

Photo: Rotan Booster Club

Rotan’s new scoreboard got a big workout in a 105-91 loss to Strawn Friday night in a game that lasted over three hours.

It is tied for the 37th highest scoring game in Texas six-man football history.

The Greyhounds (2-3) led this shootout 50-45 at the half on their way to the win.

Rotan drops to 1-2 on the year.

Santa Anna (3-2) fell for a second straight week, dropping a 54-8 Thursday night home decision to #10 Medina.

The Bobcats (5-0) led 32-0 in the second quarter before the Mountaineers got on the scoreboard.

Photo: Snyder ISD

Snyder (2-3) rallied late but could not overcome an early deficit in a 27-24 loss at Big Spring (4-1).

The Steers led 27-7 at halftime, but the Tigers did not go quietly in the second half.

Easton Stewart completed 18 of 25 passes for 291 yards and a pair of touchdown passes, one to Jay Castillo (6 rec, 134 yds) and another to Dom Dominguez (1 rec, 27 yds). Dominguez was Snyder’s leading rusher with 28 yards.

Gavin Padron paced the Big Spring attack, throwing for 302 yards and four touchdowns to four different receivers.

Stamford (5-0, 1-0) stayed perfect in 2022 with a 48-12 District 4-2A Division I win over Winters (1-4, 0-1).

The Bulldogs led 20-6 at the half and outpaced the Blizzards 28-6 over the final 24 minutes to earn the victory.

Sophomore quarterback Christian Duran threw for 183 yards and two touchdowns and picked up 112 yards and three touchdowns on the ground.

Kaston Vega led all Bulldog rushers with 114 yards and scored once. Hayden Henager caught four passes for 80 yards and touchdown. Ja’Kain Whitaker topped the team in tackles with ten, while Justin Brady added eight.

Chris Martinez racked up 184 total yards to lead the Blizzards.

TLCA Abilene allowed its fewest points of the season but could not score in a 49-0 loss at Wichita Falls City View. The Mustangs led 35-0 at the half and only allowed 80 yards of total offense.

The Eagles drop to 0-5 on the season and will get to play their first home game (at Hawley) against Hamlin after the bye week.

Photo: Zoe Matlock

Westbrook (4-1) fell for the first time in 2022, losing at home to Garden City (4-1) 46-42.

The Wildcats played four ranked teams in five non-district games and could not complete a second half comeback in their loss to the Bearcats.

Garden City held a 46-29 lead in the third quarter and held off a late Wildcat rally. John Lopez led the Bearcats with 103 yards and four touchdowns rushing and also threw a touchdown pass.

Cedric Ware was held to a season low 79 yard rushing but did score three times on the ground and caught two passes for 62 yards and another sixer.

Parker Matlock completed 9 of 13 passes for 122 yards and one touchdown.

Pahton Dominguez continued his dominant season on defense, leading the Wildcats with 15 tackles and forcing a fumble.

The Bearcats have now beaten the Wildcats two seasons in a row.

Wylie put 61 points on the board against a 6A team but could not come out on top in a 63-61 loss at San Angelo Central.

You’ve all seen the video of Central’s miracle victory by now, but it ranks among the crazier endings to a game I’ve ever seen.

The Bulldogs and Bobcats were tied 7-7 after one but then the scoring explosion started. The teams combined for seven touchdowns in the second quarter, four in the third and five more in the fourth.

Wylie trailed by as many as 14 in the second half but had an answer every time, and took the lead 61-57 on a 13-yard K.J. Long touchdown run with 19 seconds to play.

Long had another amazing night, going 21-26 for 482 yards and five touchdowns and running for 144 yards and a touchdown. Central quarterback Tyler Hill was pretty good himself, throwing for 279 yards and three scores and running for 263 yards and four touchdowns.

Wylie gained 745 yards of total offense, including 102 yards rushing by Landry Carlton and eight catches for 192 yards and two scores from Harrison Heighten and seven grabs for 165 yards and two touchdown by Braden Regala.

Zephyr took care of an overmatched Olfen squad 58-0 to get to 4-1 on the season. The Bulldogs have won four in a row after a season opening seven-point loss to Bronte.

Zephyr outgained Olfen 221 to 8 in the victory.

Jayden Millican ran for 63 yards and a pair of touchdowns and also threw a touchdown pass. Johnny Paul Evans-Rollins and Kaden Floyd topped the team in tackles with six each.

STILL PERFECT

We are down to seven area teams that are unbeaten after five weeks.

Gorman, Roscoe and Westbrook all fell off the list with what I would call upset losses Friday night.

Three of these teams have pretty big challenges on the schedule next week: Loraine plays #1 Benjamin, Aspermont takes on 3-1 Newcastle and Stamford visits 4-0 Olney.

May visits Burnet Smoking For Jesus, while Breckenridge, Cross Plains and Hawley are certain to remain on the list as they are off this upcoming week.

COLLEGE ROUNDUP

Photo: ACU Sports Information

ACU (3-1) defended the home field against Division II Western New Mexico, beating the Mustangs 34-7 Saturday evening.

Ethan Long took over at quarterback with the Wildcats trailing 7-3 and led them on a 31 unanswered points to finish the game. He threw for 251 yards and two touchdowns in the win. Rovaughn Banks Jr. ran for 143 yards and a pair of scores and Jermiah Dobbins added 108 as the Wildcats outgained WNMU 469-167.

While the Wildcats would love to a get a ring for winning the WAC, defensive lineman William Morgan gave out one Saturday night and got engaged on the field.

Hardin-Simmons could not get over the hump against rival Mary Hardin-Baylor, falling at home to the Crusaders 50-20.

HSU (2-1, 0-1) went toe-to-toe with the Cru in the first half, but turned the ball over four times. Two fumbles were returned for touchdowns by UMHB to turn a 22-20 lead into a 36-20 lead in a matter of 34 seconds.

Kevi Evans had a big game for HSU, catching five passes for 136 yards and two touchdowns. He also had a long touchdown catch called back due to a holding call on the Cowboys.

The Crusaders outgained the Cowboys 419 to 312 and scored the only two touchdowns of the second half. HSU only picked up two first downs in the second half.

The Cowboys will have their backs against the wall the remainder of the season as they try to win out and do enough to earn a trip to the Division III playoffs.

Howard Payne took care of East Texas Baptist 33-21 Saturday afternoon to stay perfect through two games in ASC play.

The Yellow Jackets (3-1, 2-0) were actually outgained by the Tigers 438-425 but won the turnover battle 3-1.

HPU led 13-0 after one and 19-0 at the half. The Tigers got as close as 26-21 on the first play of the fourth quarter but the Yellow Jackets answered midway through the fourth with a final touchdown to claim the win.

Landon McKinney tossed four touchdown passes and threw for 377 yards. Jordan Carroll (5 rec, 152 yds, 2 TD) and Otis Lanier (5 rec, 149 yds, 2 TD) were big in the passing game, while Tauren Bradley led the ground attack with 38 yards and a touchdown.

McMurry came up just short of win number one on the season, falling at Southwestern 38-33.

The War Hawks (0-4, 0-2) had their best offensive effort of the season, scoring four more points in one game than they had the previous three, but the defense also gave up more points than they had all year.

McMurry grabbed a 14-0 first quarter lead and led 26-14 at the half but could not hold on. Southwestern went ahead 38-26 after a 24-point third quarter and held off the War Hawks in the final quarter to win.

Andrew McBride threw for 281 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another, his best effort as McMurry’s quarterback thus far.

Cisco College fell to 0-2 in conference play with a 51-13 home loss to Trinity Valley (3-1, 2-0).

The Wranglers (2-2, 0-2) trailed 22-0 at the half and could not rally in the second half.
