Week 7 Rewind
OFF THE TOP
Things that caught my attention Friday night:
Abilene High was pretty dominant, especially defensively, in a 45-0 win over Caprock. The Longhorns had under 100 yards of total offense until the fourth quarter.
Wylie is 1-0 in district with a 38-14 win over Plainview, while Cooper is 0-1 with a 30-point loss at Wichita Falls Rider.
Brownwood and Early cruise to district opening wins over Big Spring and Ballinger.
Breckenridge (42-0) and Jim Ned (48-18) power to district opening road victories over Iowa Park and Bowie, while Clyde drops a 42-28 shootout at home to Vernon.
Merkel finds the offense! The Badgers beat Dublin 51-24 to start district 1-0.
Two more of our area unbeatens lose for the first time as Cross Plains falls at Roscoe 28-6 and Aspermont drops a 51-16 decision to Jayton.
Cisco powers past Olney 34-15 to jump out to a 3-0 start in district. They have a showdown with Stamford next week. Hawley cruises past Colorado City 61-7 and Anson shuts out Winters 35-0 for a second straight district victory.
Coleman loses a top-ten showdown in a defensive battle to Tolar at home 16-6.
Bangs stays on a roll with a 40-0 win over Goldthwaite.
Haskell explodes on offense in a 58-6 win over area rival Munday.
Hermleigh, Westbrook and Ira look like the three teams that will compete for the two playoff spots out of 8-1A Division I after they win openers over Roby, Highland and Rotan.
May impresses again in a 60-0 win over Evant
Rising Star looked very good in their Thursday night 76-0 shut out victory at Trent.
Loraine gets tested but gets the job done 50-42 at 1A D1 O'Donnell. Blackwell has won three in a row, dominating Paint Rock 48-0.
A tad out of my coverage area, but Cherokee beats Richland Springs 78-47... the first district loss for the Coyotes since 2001!!!

BIG COUNTRY A TO Z
Abilene High (3-4, 2-1) rebounded from last weeks loss to Tascosa with its best game of the season so far in a 45-0 shutout of Caprock.
The Eagles dominated from the start, leading 17-0 after one and 31-0 at the half.
Dylan Slack bounced back from a tough game at Tascosa by throwing three TD passes and no picks, and freshman speedster Brayden Henry provided a spark at QB with his legs. Chad Lara ran for a touchdown and caught one as well and Tim Outlaw caught a pair of touchdown passes. Jayson Henley also returned an interception for a touchdown in the AHS victory.
The Eagles set up a key showdown with Lubbock Cooper next week in the first ever football meeting between the two schools. Abilene, Lubbock Cooper and Tascosa are the only three teams within a winning record in district after three weeks.
Abilene Christian (5-1,32-0) kept rolling with a 66-21 victory over Amarillo San Jacinto on Saturday.
The Panthers keep pace with defending state champ Fort Worth Covenant Classical atop the district standings.
Albany (4-2, 1-0) jumped into district play with a 49-18 win at Miles (4-2, 0-1).
Coy Lefevre returned to action in a big way, scoring the first four Albany touchdowns of the night (three on runs, one on a pass from London Fuentes) to help the Lions jump out to 21-0 and 28-6 leads. He ran for 167 yards and Adam Hill added 143 and two touchdowns.
Samuel Rosas capped the scoring with a 54-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Jayden Lucas led the defense with 11 tackles, 2.5 of them for loss. Coy Cauble added nine takedowns.
Anson earned a second consecutive district victory with a 35-0 home shutout of Winters.
The Tigers (2-5, 2-1) stay in the playoff chase while the Blizzards (1-6, 0-3) drop their fifth straight contest.
Aspermont (6-1, 0-1) lost for the first time in 2022 as rival Jayton (4-3, 1-0) knocked them off 51-16 in the district opener for both squads.
The Hornets will look to bounce back next week at winless Patton Springs. That game has been moved to Thursday.
Baird (3-3, 0-1) played solid defense but could not get the offense going in a 34-8 home loss to Perrin-Whitt (3-3, 1-0).
The Bears two-game winning streak comes to an end and they will need to put it behind them and begin another streak to close the season to have any chance at reaching the playoffs.
Ballinger (0-6, 0-1) continues to struggle in 2022, dropping its district opener to Early (3-3, 1-0) at home Friday night 36-0.
The Longhorn defense dominated throughout, keeping the Bearcats in the negative offensively with -33 total yards.
Early picked up 361 yards of offense, led by Griffin Cheslock’s 130-yard, one touchdown rushing effort. Jaxyn Price threw for 161 yards and a touchdown to Caleb McCullough.
Bangs (4-2, 2-0) won for a fourth straight week and stayed perfect in district play with a 40-0 shutout of Goldthwaite (0-7, 0-3).
The Dragons got another strong effort from Guy Powell, who ran for 188 yards and two touchdowns, caught a touchdown pass and led the defense with ten tackles.
Bangs forced four turnovers, including a pair of interceptions from their other guy, Guy Funk.
Kenny Cole threw for 164 yards and three touchdowns.
Blackwell (4-3) will head into district play on a three-game winning streak thanks to a 48-0 shut out win at Paint Rock Friday night.
The Hornets led 36-0 by the end of the first quarter and cruised to the win in this one.
Blanket (5-1) was off and will begin district play at home against winless Gustine this week.
Breckenridge (6-0, 1-0) crushed Iowa Park (1-5, 0-1) 42-0 on the road to kick off district play.
The Buckaroos and Hawks were scoreless after one quarter, but the visitors led 14-0 by the half and cruised in the second half.
Chase Lehr completed 10 of 13 passes for 217 yards and two touchdowns in a very efficient outing. Jerry Lawson ran for 59 yards and a touchdown and Adrian Ruiz caught three passes for 80 yards and a score.
Lane Castillo, Zeke Castillo and Caiden Marin each picked up 11 tackles on the night to help keep the Hawks off the scoreboard.
Brookesmith (0-6) enjoyed the off week and will open district action this week against Lohn.
Brownwood (5-2, 1-0) got district play started with a 41-10 victory over Big Spring (4-3, 0-1).
The Lions outgained the Steers 442 to 407 and got ahead in the turnover department, picking off four passes and recovering a fumble.
Brownwood missed multiple players due to suspensions for rules violations, putting Chance Jones back under center for the first time this season. Jones, who started at quarterback the last two seasons, threw for 213 yards and three touchdowns to go against two interceptions.
Konlyn Anderson had a huge game on the ground going for 196 yards and three touchdowns and Jason Jackson was big in the passing game catching five passes for 114 yards and a pair of scores in his second game back after injury.
Cisco (6-1, 3-0) notched another district victory, getting past Olney 34-15 to keep the Cubs (4-2, 0-2) winless in 4-2A Division I play.
Hunter Long ran for 338 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Loboes to the win. He proved to be unstoppable against the Cubs, running for scores of 11, 83, 64, two and seven-yards on the night.
The Cubs ran 61 plays to Cisco’s 29, but were still outgained 399-285.
Only eight passes were thrown in the game.
Clyde (4-2, 0-1) dropped its district opener at home to Vernon 42-28.
The teams went back and forth early, with the Lions leading 14-13 after one quarter and 28-21 heading into the fourth. Vernon held on in the final quarter to hand the Bulldogs their first loss since week one at Cisco.
Blake Carr ran for 93 yards and three touchdowns and added 181 yards and a pair of interceptions in the passing game. Austin Hastings caught a team-high eight passes for 83 yards and a score.
Coleman (5-2, 2-1) came up shy against Tolar in a 16-6 district decision that will likely decide the District 5-2A Division I title.
The Bluecats only gave up 152 yards of total offense but could only muster 197 of their own and turned it over twice on offense.
Payton Brown ran for 143 yards and both Tolar touchdowns, one in the first quarter and another in the second to give the Rattlers a 13-0 halftime lead.
Coleman scored on a Jadin Jackson touchdown run in the fourth and had another touchdown called back due to penalty.
Colorado City had no answers for #2 Hawley, falling on the road to the Bearcats 61-7.
The Bearcats (6-0, 2-0) had a 35-0 lead by halftime and only gave up the Wolves (0-7, 0-3) only score in the fourth quarter.
Austin Cumpton ran for 100 yards and four touchdowns and Rodey Hooper tossed a trio of touchdown passes. Will Scott was the top receiver with three grabs for 52 yards and a score.
Cooper (2-4, 0-1) dropped its district opener at preseason favorite Wichita Falls Rider 51-21 Friday night.
The Cougars fell behind 7-0 early but tied it up on their next drive on a Chris Warren touchdown toss to Cam Herron. However, the Raiders answered with the next 41-points and their biggest lead of 48-7 late in the third. Warren added a touchdown run as well in the loss. He threw for 168 yards and ran for 30.
Herron had six grabs for 92-yards and the score and receiver D’Andre Ralston was the leading rusher with 39 yards on six carries.
Cross Plains (5-1, 0-1) fell from the ranks of the unbeaten in a 28-6 decision at Roscoe (4-2, 1-0).
The Plowboys played their best defense in weeks to shut down the Buffaloes offense and snap a two-game skid.
Roscoe led 22-6 at the half and added the only score of the second half to pull away for the win. The Plowboys outgained the Buffs 317 to 167.
Noah Moses ran for the only Cross Plains score and led the way with 15 tackles.
Jax Watts paced the Plowboys with 214 yards and two touchdowns through the air.
Eastland (0-6, 0-1) continued its run of tough luck with a 53-6 loss at Jacksboro in the District 5-3A Division II opener.

Highland (1-5, 0-1) could not get on the scoreboard against defending state champion and #2 ranked Westbrook.
The Wildcats (5-1, 1-0) picked up a 50-0 win in their first game since a loss to Garden City two weeks ago. They led 28-0 by the end of the first quarter and 44-0 by halftime.
Grayson Jeffrey led the team on the ground with 98 yards and a pair of touchdowns and Pahton Dominguez and Parker Matlock led the defense with seven tackles a piece.
The Hornets have dropped three games in a row.
Ira (5-1, 1-0) took down Rotan (2-3, 0-1) on the road Friday night 70-24 to get off to a good start in district play.

Loraine bounced back from loss number one of the season to #1 Benjamin with a 50-42 road win over 1A D1 O’Donnell.
The Bulldogs (6-1) will be off this week before kicking off district play with a big one at home against Blackwell on October 21.
Lueders-Avoca (2-5, 0-1) forfeited its district opener to Throckmorton.
May (6-0, 1-0) began district play with an easy 60-0 win over Evant (0-6, 0-1).
The Elks remain winless while the Tigers will stay in the state rankings for yet another week.
The Tigers only picked up 181 yards in the game but their dominant defense gave the offense short fields all night.
Damian Salinas ran for 90 yards and three touchdowns and led the Tigers with seven tackles.
Merkel got the offense rolling in a big way, topping Dublin 51-25 in the district opener for both squads.
The Badgers (2-4, 1-0) had only scored 61 points all season prior to exploding against the Lions (2-4, 0-1).

The Rangers (4-3, 1-0) fell behind the Tigers early 7-0 on a Easton Stewart to Dyllan Angeley touchdown pass, and Snyder led 7-6 after one. However, Greenwood had a 22-13 lead by the half and held on to pick up the district victory.
Stamford (6-0, 2-0) did not play Friday night and will get set to host Cisco in a district showdown this week.
Sweetwater (1-5) was off for its open week. The Mustangs will host Greenwood Friday for their district opener.
Wylie (3-3, 1-0) struggled early in its district opener against Plainview (2-4, 0-1) but found it rhythm to get past the Bulldogs for a 38-14 win.
Wylie spotted Plainview an 8-0 lead before rallying to go up 10-8 after one, but Plainview scored again midway through the second to lead 14-10. That’s when the Bulldogs went on a run, however, scoring the final 28 points of the contest for the victory.
Wylie outgained Plainview 431 to 281, another solid effort for the offense and a much better effort for a Bulldog that had given up 33, 56 and 63 points in losses over the previous three weeks.
K.J. Long threw for 261 yards and a trio of touchdown tosses and also ran for a score. Brayden Regala was his top target once again, catching nine passes for 193 yards and a score. Landry Carlton led the way on the ground with 75 yards on 13 carries.

COLLEGE ROUNDUP
ACU dropped a 41-38 shootout in a non-conference game at Stephen F. Austin Saturday night.
The Wildcats rallied from a 21-0 deficit and had a chance to win it with just seconds left on the clock, but a field goal came up short and was returned by the Lumberjacks into ACU territory. The Wildcats were flagged for a horsecollar tackle and that gave SFA kicker Chris Campos an opportunity to kick a game-winning 51-yard field goal. He nailed it and the Jacks escaped with a win.
During the game Sweetwater native Kobe Clark became the ACU all-time receptions leader with 236 grabs. He had nine catches for 73 yards and a touchdown on the night.
Jermiah Dobbins ran for 166 yards and three scores and Maverick McIvor threw for 283 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
ACU outgained SFA 527 to 397 and won the turnover battle two to one but came up shy.
These two teams will meet again in Abilene on Nov. 19 for a WAC conference game.
Hardin-Simmons (4-1, 2-1) scored off all four Sul Ross State turnovers in the game and won a shootout over the Lobos 70-35.
The Cowboys outscored Sul Ross 28-7 in the second quarter to build a lead and 21-0 in the fourth quarter to pull away.
The Lobos were impressive on offense, outgaining HSU 545 to 533. Wide receiver Austin Ogunmakin proved to be nearly unstoppable, catching 11 passes for 242 yards and two touchdowns.
HSU got 110 yards and four rushing touchdowns from Hawley grad Colton Marshall and Myles Featherston added 90 yards and two more scores. Gaylon Glynn threw for 235 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another and Kevi Evans led the team with five catches for 94 yards and an unbelievable “You Got Mossed” style touchdown catch.
Howard Payne (5-1, 4-0) overcame a sluggish start to stay perfect in ASC play with a 30-18 home victory over McMurry (0-6, 0-4).
The Yellow Jackets led just 3-0 after one quarter but got a pair of second quarter touchdowns for a 17-0 halftime lead and were never tested in the second half.
The Landon McKinney to Otis Lanier connection worked wonders once again for HPU as Lanier caught eight passes for 132 yards and three of McKinney’s four touchdown tosses. Kyle Bell led the Jacket defense with 15 tackles.
Luke Bradshaw got the start at quarterback for the War Hawks and completed 16 of 23 for 167 yards with a touchdown and an interception. McMurry went for 329 total yards in one of their better offensive outings of the season, but 166 of them came in the fourth quarter with the game out of reach.
Anson native Drew Hagler had his second straight good effort at running back, picking up 51 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
Cisco College (3-3, 1-3) earned its first conference victory for new head coach John O’Mera in a 7-6 slugfest at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M.
The Wranglers gave up 376 yards but just one touchdown, and a missed extra point in the second quarter proved to be the difference.
Cisco scored its only touchdown in the second quarter as well and held onto its 7-6 halftime lead for the remainder of the ballgame.
