Week 8 Rewind
OFF THE TOP
Things that caught my attention in Week 8:
Wylie earns the win of the week, coming from behind to top Wichita Falls Rider 39-38 to take over the top spot in the 2-5A Division II.
Cooper bounces back with a blowout of Palo Duro, while Abilene High can’t get the offense going (again) in a close loss at Lubbock Cooper.
Brownwood keeps rolling and looks to be the district favorite.
Snyder takes advantage of Graham’s suspensions and picks up a big district win.
Breckenridge suffers a surprising loss at Vernon, while Jim Ned squeaks past Clyde to tie the Lions for the district lead.
Early gets a huge win at Brady to keep pace with Wall for the 2-3A Division II lead.
Merkel wins again, putting themselves in playoff position with a close victory at Eastland.
Cisco wins a showdown at Stamford to knock the Bulldogs from the ranks of the unbeaten, while Hawley blows out Winters to stay tied atop the district with the Loboes.
Bangs gets past San Saba to set up a showdown with Tolar for the district lead.
Coleman bounces back from losing to the Rattlers with an easy win over Hamilton.
Albany, Roscoe and Miles earn key district wins. Hamlin at Cross Plains this week may end up being for the fourth playoff spot out of 6-2A Division II.
Hermleigh, Ira and Westbrook stay tied at 2-0 atop the 8-1A D1 standings.
Baird and Gorman stay in the playoff picture with wins over Lingleville and Perrin-Whitt.
May keeps rolling with another mercy rule win, this time over Lometa.
Aspermont bounces back from its first loss and stays in the playoff mix.
Zephyr and Blanket pick up easy wins in 15-1A DII play.
Brookesmith enters the win column with a shut out of Lohn.
McMurry earns its first win of the season with a 24-21 decision at Austin College.

BIG COUNTRY A TO Z
Abilene High (3-5, 2-2) lost out on an opportunity to take command of the number two spot in District 2-5A Division I with an 11-8 loss at Lubbock Cooper.
The Eagles led 8-0 through most the first half, but the Pirates got a field goal with just over a minute left in the second quarter then went ahead to stay with a 57-yard Tyler Spruiell to Cooper Morris touchdown toss to cap the third quarter.
Abilene High limited the Pirates to just 125 yards of total offense and picked up 209 of their own. However, AHS turned it over three times and Cooper did not turn it over at all, obviously a key component of the way the contest came out.
The Eagles now find themselves in a four-team dog-fight for the final two playoff spots and only have two games left on the schedule, at home against Coronado and at Amarillo. They’d need to win both and get some help to avoid a bi-district road trip to El Paso.
Abilene Christian (6-1, 4-0) blew out Irving The Highlands 54-8 on the road Friday night to run its winning streak to five and stay perfect in district action.
The Panthers now get set to host Fort Worth Covenant Classical (6-1, 4-0) for the district championship on Saturday.
Albany (5-2, 2-0) picked up its second consecutive dominating district victory with a 56-0 shut out of Cross Plains (5-2, 0-2).
Coy Lefevre scored the first two touchdowns of the night to help the Lions build a 21-0 lead by the end of the first quarter. He ran for 127 yards and the two scores and also caught two passes for 78-yards and another touchdown.
London Fuentes had his best game at quarterback this season, completing 8-11 passes for 182 yards and three touchdowns and running for 37 yards and another.
Wyatt Windham topped the Lions with 12 tackles and Coy Cauble added eight. Adam Hill picked up seven tackles, two for loss on sacks, ran for 76 yards and a touchdown and caught three passes for 89 yards and a sixer.
Cross Plains has now lost two in a row after a 5-0 start to the season. The Buffaloes host Hamlin this week in a game that will go a long way in deciding the fourth playoff spot out of the district.
The Buffaloes could only must 126 total yards in the game, most on their final drive of the night.
Anson (2-6, 2-2) hung with Olney on the road, but could not overcome the Cubs ground attack in a 31-14 loss.
The Tigers two-game winning streak comes to an end while Olney wins after dropping its last two to Cisco and Stamford.
The game was tied 14-14 at halftime but the Cubs outscored the Tigers 17-0 in the second half to pull away for the win.
Olney ran for 333 yards in the game, led by a 209-yard, four touchdown effort from quarterback Gatlin Guy.
Aspermont (7-1, 1-1) played under the Thursday night lights and handled Patton Springs 70-24 to even its district record.
The Hornets, who lost their district opener the week before to rival Jayton, remain right in the thick of the playoff race, which will likely come down to their regular season finale at Motley County on Nov. 4.
Baird (4-3, 1-1) also stayed in the postseason picture with a big 58-8 win at injury-plagued Lingleville.
The Bears rebounded from a district loss to Perrin-Whitt and find themselves tied with Gorman, Bryson and Perrin-Whitt at 1-1 after two weeks of district action.
Ballinger (0-7, 0-2) suffered its third straight shut out loss in a 36-0 district defeat at Wall (6-1, 2-0).
The Bearcats hung with the #10 Hawks in the first half, trailing just 7-0 after one and 15-0 at the half.
However, Ballinger could not get the offense rolling in what has been a frustrating season and dropped its second straight district game.
Bangs (5-2, 3-0) extended its winning streak to five with a 42-35 decision at San Saba (5-3, 1-3).
The Dragons led throughout but could never completely put the Armadillos away, leading 7-0 after one, 28-20 at the half and 42-28 after three quarters.
Guy Powell led the attack, as usual, picking up 293 yards and four touchdowns rushing and Kenny Cole went 7 for 10 passing for 95 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 46 yards.
Bangs now sets up a game for the district lead against state-ranked Tolar at home Friday night.
Blackwell (4-3, 0-0) did not play and will enter district play with a big one at Loraine.
Blanket (6-1, 1-0) opened district play with a 66-16 victory over Gustine.
The Tigers keep pace with Sidney and Zephyr atop the 15-1A DII standings.
Blanket picked up a game-high 177 yards and four scores from Brayden Day while Levi Vasquez added 141 and five touchdowns rushing.
Day led the team with eight tackles and also recovered two fumbles.
Breckenridge (6-1, 1-1) suffered the most surprising loss of the night, falling at Vernon 28-21.
The Lions outrushed the Buckaroos 333 to 55 and outgained them overall 446 to just 154.
Vernon led 14-0 at the half but the Bucks tied it up on a pair of Anson Rodgers touchdown runs in the third quarter.
Vernon scored twice to open the fourth and held off a late rally to knock Breckenridge from the ranks of the unbeaten.
Rogers scored all three Buckaroo touchdowns.
Breckenridge will host Jim Ned Friday in a huge game for the District 3-3A Division I playoff picture.
Brookesmith (1-6, 1-0) earned its first win of the season and the first for Jack Graves as Mustangs head coach, shutting out Lohn 46-0 Friday night.
The Mustangs got 219 yards and four touchdowns rushing from Adyn Ribble. He also led the team in tackles with 14 and Vegas Gilliam added 12.
Brownwood (6-2, 2-0) dominated San Angelo Lake View 60-13 Thursday night to stay perfect in district play.
The Lions led 28-0 after one and 52-7 at the half on their way to the win.
Konlyn Anderson picked up 156 yards and scored five rushing touchdowns to lead a Brownwood offense that ran for 354 yards.
The Lions outgained Lake View 451-238.
Cisco (7-1, 4-0) handed Stamford (6-1, 2-1) its first loss of the season in a 47-14 decision Friday night.
The Loboes jumped out to a 19-0 lead after one quarter and extended the advantage to 33-8 at halftime.
Three Bulldog turnovers helped lead to their demise, and Cisco outgained Stamford 540 to 201.
The Loboes went to the air more than usual, as Hunter Long threw for 243 yards and three touchdowns to go along with 145 yards and three more scores on the ground. Trent Huston added 92 yards and a touchdown rushing and Cade Gayle hauled in four passes for 156 yards and two scores.
Hayden Henager ran for 71 yards to lead the Bulldogs. Christian Duran went just 5 for 12 passing for 48 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. Quenton Pryor and Cle Whitfield scored the two Stamford touchdowns.
Clyde (4-3, 0-2) battled hard without starting quarterback Blake Carr but fell at Jim Ned (4-3, 2-0) 28-21 Friday night.
The Bulldogs led 7-0 after one and the game was tied 7-7 at the half, but the Indians grabbed a 21-14 lead after three quarters and held on for the win.
Jim Ned has won four straight after an 0-3 start to the season and sits in a first place tie with Vernon atop the 3-3A Division I standings.
The Indians outgained Clyde 410 to 279, with 331 of those yards coming via the run.
Indian quarterback Troy Doran ran for 190 yards and three touchdowns and added 79 yards with a touchdown and two picks passing. Brayden Shipman also topped the century mark with 106 yards rushing and Carter Wood caught a 32-yard scoring strike from Doran.
Sophomore Tucker Jones went 17-35 passing for 200 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions in his starting debut for Clyde. Connor Hawk was his top receiver, catching seven passes for 116 yards and two touchdowns.
The Bulldogs now get set to host Iowa Park in a must-win game for their playoff hopes, while Jim Ned will visit Breckenridge in another game with big postseason implications.
Coleman (6-2, 3-1) had no issues rebounding from last week’s loss to Tolar, topping Hamilton 42-7 on the road to improve to 3-1 in district play.
The Bluecats jumped out to a 14-0 lead and led 28-7 by halftime on their way to the win.
Jadin Jackson threw three touchdown passes and ran for two more to lead the Coleman attack.
Colorado City (0-7, 0-3) did not play this week. The Wolves resume play Friday night at home against Winters.
Cooper (3-4, 1-1) evened its district mark with a convincing 50-14 win over Amarillo Palo Duro (2-5, 1-1).
The Cougars led 20-0 by the time the first quarter ended and upped the lead to 30-0 at the break.
Daniel Bray had his best night of the season for the Cougars on the ground, picking up 141 yards and scoring twice. Chris Warren threw for 160 yards a trio of touchdowns, two to Cam Herron and one each to Malik Jackson and Clayton Gift. Elijah Stevenson had a pick-six on defense to aid the Cougar attack.
Early (4-3, 2-0) won for the third time in four weeks with a key 41-27 road win at Brady (3-4, 1-1).
The Longhorns sit in a first-place tie with state-ranked Wall atop the District 2-3A Div. II standings after two weeks of play.
Early and Brady traded scores in the first half, but the Horns got a Jaxyn Price to Caleb McCullough touchdown toss near the end of the second quarter to lead 27-15 at the break.
The Bulldogs got within 27-21 and 34-27 in the second half but Early scored with just over a minute to go to put the game away.
Price threw for 229 yards and three touchdowns, two to Jeremy Brown who caught seven passes for 101 yards.
Kaleb Ozuna led the ground game with 91 yards and a score.
Eastland (0-7, 0-2) fell at home to Merkel (3-4, 2-0) 34-28 to remain winless on the season.
The Badgers won their second straight to start district play and have put themselves in pretty good playoff position after two weeks of action.
The game was tied 7-7 after one, 14-14 at the half and 21-21 at one point in the third quarter before Merkel went ahead 34-21 and held on to win.
The Badgers got another big effort via the run, gashing the Mavericks for 271 yards on the ground — 123 for Joey Zink and 119 and two touchdowns for Connor Willyerd. Zink also threw two touchdown passes, both to Bryant Jones.
Isaiah Hays threw for 157 yards and three scores for the Mavericks — all three to Jay Oznick, who also led Eastland with 99 yards and a touchdown rushing.
Elijah Olivarez led Merkel with nine tackles and freshman Kye Herrington led Eastland with ten.
Gorman (5-2, 1-1) snapped a two-game skid with a 38-0 shutout win over Perrin-Whitt.
Gorman racked up 266 rushing yards in the game, led by Joseph Rainey’s 110 yards and three touchdowns. Maddox Roberts ran for 56 yards and a score and also threw a touchdown pass to Preston Parson. Nash Guthery paced the Panthers with an impressive 16 tackles on defense and Eli Martinez added nine and a pair of sacks.
The Panthers stay in the playoff chase and will likely be favored to win the last three games on their schedule. Do that, and they’ll be in the playoffs for the second straight season.
Hamlin (5-2, 1-1) saw a five-game winning streak come to an end with a 28-0 home loss to Miles (5-2, 1-1).
The Bulldogs scored one touchdown in each quarter on their way to evening their district record at 1-1.
Haskell (4-4, 2-2) dropped to its second district contest in a close 27-20 loss to Archer City.
The Indians kept it close with the Wildcats (5-2, 3-0) all night, as they were tied 20-20 until Archer City scored with just over two minutes to go. Haskell got into Wildcat territory on their last drive but an Archer City interception sealed the victory.
Haskell has now suffered a pair of one-touchdown losses to the district co-leaders Windthorst and Archer City, but are in good shape for a playoff spot with winless Electra still on the schedule.
The Indians host Seymour (5-2, 2-1) in another key district contest Friday night.
Hawley (7-0, 3-0) was able to pull its starters at halftime once again in a 60-6 win at Winters (1-7, 0-4)
The #2 ranked Bearcats led 48-0 by halftime and cruised to another easy victory. They have won their first three district games by a combined 176-13, but the final three will be tougher against Olney, Stamford and Cisco.
Austin Cumpton ran for 138 yards and four touchdowns and Rodey Hooper threw for 215 yards and two touchdowns on just five of six passing.
Will Scott led the Hawley defense with nine tackles and Cumpton added eight, four of them for loss.
The Blizzards fall to the basement of the 4-2A Division I standings and will likely miss out on the playoffs for a second straight season.
Hermleigh (6-1, 2-0) stayed perfect in district play with a 61-16 win at Rotan Friday night.
The Yellowhammers fall to 2-4, 0-2 and are in a tough spot as far as making the playoffs goes.
The Cardinals got as close as they could to their season average of 60.8 points per game and won their fourth straight contest.
Rotan has lost two in a row and three of four overall.
Highland (1-6, 0-2) went the distance against Ira, but the Bulldogs (6-1, 2-0) pulled out a 54-44 win to stay perfect in district play.
The Hornets led 20-16 at the half, but Ira gained a 38-36 advantage heading into the fourth and outlasted Highland in the final quarter to win.
Highland outgained Ira 275-252 but turned it over three times to the Bulldogs one.
Bryton Partain led the Bulldogs with 160 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Demitri Juarez added 32 yards and a pair of scores and Zane Allen and Kaden Foree each caught touchdown passes. Jaren Pena topped Ira with 7.5 tackles and Allen added seven.
Cooper Bowen paced Highland with 144 yards and three touchdowns rushing, while Tylan Baltrhop added 72 and two more sixers. Bowen paced the Hornets with seven tackles.
The Hornets are all but out of the playoff chase while Ira is in the thick of it in a three-way tie atop the district with Hermleigh and Westbrook.
Loraine (6-1, 0-0) enjoyed the bye week and will return to action in a game that could decide the district title against Blackwell this week.
Lueders-Avoca (0-2, 2-6) forfeited for the second week in a row, this time to Rule (5-2, 2-0).
The Bobcats sit alone atop the 7-1A Division II standings after two weeks.
May (7-0, 2-0) just keeps rolling. The Tigers topped Lometa 54-6 to stay at the top of the District 14-1A Division I standings with Jonesboro.
May led 16-0 after one and outscored the Hornets 38-6 in the second quarter on the way to the win.
May racked up 235 yards of total offense, led by Braden Steele’s 85 yards and one score passing and 40 yards and a touchdown rushing. Luke McKenzie threw a touchdown pass and also caught four passes for 97 yards and a trip to the end zone.
Moran (0-7, 0-0) sat out action on its bye week and will take a winless record into district play against Panther Creek this week.
Paint Creek (2-5, 0-1) dropped its district opener in a 50-0 decision against Woodson (2-6, 1-1).
The Pirates have lost their last four after a 2-1 start to the season.
Ranger (2-5) cancelled its game against Azle Christian this week and will resume play Thursday at home against the North Texas Spartans, who are 0-7 on the season.
Rising Star (6-1, 0-0) was off this week and will open district play at home against Paint Rock (2-5, 0-0).
Roby (0-7, 0-2) made it to the fourth quarter before falling to Westbrook 86-36 Friday night.
Westbrook (6-1, 2-0) led 20-8 after one and 42-30 at the half before outscoring the Lions 38-6 in the third quarter to pull away.
The Wildcats outgained Roby 542-280 on the night.
Brennan Faucett threw for 151 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions and also ran for a score for Roby. Dylan Lujan ran for a score and completed 10 of 12 passes for 91 yards. Josh Adames led the Lions with seven grabs for 60 yards and a sixer. He also topped the team with six tackles.
The Wildcats got 223 yards and five rushing touchdowns from Grayson Jeffrey and 205 yards and four touchdowns from Brannon Larson in the win.
Jeffrey topped the team with ten tackles and also picked off two passes, while Parker Matlock added seven takedowns.
Roscoe (5-2, 2-0) cruised past TLCA Abilene (0-7, 0-2) to stay unbeaten through two weeks in district play.
The Plowboys jumped out to a 32-0 first quarter lead and were up 44-6 by the half.
Roscoe now gets set to host Albany this week, the team they are tied with atop the 6-2A Division II standings.
Santa Anna (3-4, 0-1) fell to powerful Jonesboro in its district opener 62-16.
The Mountaineers have lost four in a row after a 3-0 start to the season.
Snyder (3-5, 1-1) snapped a four-game skid with a 35-21 win over Graham (4-4, 0-2) Friday night.
The Steers were playing without many players who were suspended for their fight with Wichita Falls Hirschi the week before and the Tigers took full advantage, jumping out to a 21-7 lead by halftime and holding on in the second half.
Easton Stewart had his best game of the season under center, completing 28 of 35 passes for 289 yards and five touchdowns. Dyllan Angeley caught four of them as part of a seven grab 82 yard receiving night.
Snyer outgained Graham 372-223 in the win.
Sweetwater (1-6, 0-1) dropped its district opener to Midland Greenwood 35-7.
The Mustangs scored first but the Rangers (5-3, 2-0) tallied the final 35 points on the way to the win. Greenwood scored 21 points in the second and 14 more in the fourth and outgained Sweetwater 288 to 177.
Tate Thompson threw for 150 yards and a touchdown but also tossed four interceptions in the loss. Jamarian Amos led the Mustangs with 18 yards rushing and Jadyn Forbes was the top receiver with four grabs for 34 yards and a touchdown.
Trent (5-2, 0-0) was on its bye week and will open district play this week against Bronte (3-4, 0-0).
Wylie (4-3, 2-0) is in sole possession of first place in District 2-5A Division II after its 39-38 road win at Wichita Falls Rider Thursday night.
The Bulldogs trailed 27-10 at the half and 38-24 with 3:34 to go and still came back to win thanks to a 45-yard K.J. Long to Braden Regala touchdown pass and a two point conversion run by Malachi Daniels with just over a minute to play.
The Bulldogs got another extraordinary effort from Long, who threw for 368 yards and four touchdowns and added 94 yards on the ground. Regala hauled in seven passes for 206 yards and three scores, while Harrison Heighten caught three for 76 yards and the other touchdown.
Wylie racked up 492 yards on the night and gave up 396.
The Bulldogs are in the driver’s seat for the district title with three games to play.
Zephyr topped Mullin 58-0 to improve to 7-1 overall and 2-0 in district play.
The Bulldogs outgained Mullin 316 to 104 and forced four turnovers.
Jayden Millican continued his hot streak, picking up 163 yards and five touchdowns on the ground and leading the team with 11 tackles.
Zephyr will have its toughest challenge since a week one loss to Bronte this week with a trip to Sidney (3-3, 1-0).
That game has been moved to Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. due to the referee shortage.
Zephyr, Sidney and Blanket will battle over the final three weeks of the season for the two playoff berths out of District 15-1A Division II.
STILL PERFECT
With Breckenridge and Stamford falling Friday night we are down to two Big Country Blitz coverage area schools with a perfect record: Hawley and May.
The Bearcats and Tigers both played at AT&T Stadium on the final day of their seasons and are on a mission to get back there once again.
12 more are almost perfect and have suffered just one loss.

COLLEGE ROUNDUP
ACU notched a conference home victory 21-18 over Southern Utah Saturday afternoon.
The Wildcats improve to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in WAC play while Southern Utah falls to 3-3, 1-1.
ACU led 14-3 at the half but saw the Thunderbirds get within 14-10 in the third quarter. The Wildcats answered with a Maverick McIvor to Kobe Clark touchdown to go back up 21-10 and held off a late rally to pick up the three point win despite getting outgained 375-280.
Maverick McIvor threw for 172 yards and a score and Sweetwater native Kobe Clark (6 rec, 47 yds, 1 TD) was his top target. Jermiah Dobbins picked up 81 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Triston Anderson charted eight tackles to lead the ACU defense.
The Wildcats, off to their best start since 2013, are off this week and will resume play with a non-conference game at North Dakota on October 29.
Hardin-Simmons (5-1, 3-1) earned a third straight conference win, taking down East Texas Baptist 27-7 on homecoming.
The Cowboys dominated defensively, only allowing 94 yards of total offense (72 passing and 22 rushing) to the Tigers.
The HSU offense picked up 392 yards, led by an 87-yard two touchdown rushing effort from Colton Marshall. Gaylon Glynn added 80 yards and a score rushing and threw for 98 yards. Matt Mitchell was the Cowboys top tackler with eight, including a sack and Brock Bujnoch intercepted two passes and broke up three more.
Howard Payne (6-1, 5-0) kept pace with UMHB atop the ASC standings with a 48-17 victory over Southwestern.
The Yellow Jackets racked up 428 yards of total offense and kept the Pirates to 356, just 36 of those via the run.
HPU led 24-0 by the 6:31 mark of the second quarter and cruised from there, getting 144 yards and a touchdown passing and 40 yards rushing from Landon McKinney. Billy Reagins (60 yards rushing), Javian Myles (33 yards rushing), Tauren Bradley (28 yds rushing) and Justin Kay (16 yards rushing) all ran for touchdowns in the game and Otis Lanier (5 rec, 100 yds, 1 TD) once again topped the HPU receivers.
Kyle Bell recorded 11 tackles, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble and Jarrett Brown added nine tackles and a pair of interceptions.
McMurry is in the win column in 2022 thanks to a 24-21 road victory at Austin College.
The War Hawks jumped out to a 21-0 second quarter lead and held on to top the Kangaroos by a field goal. McMurry outgained AC 374-291, thanks to a good effort from Dexter Wyble, who made his second straight start at quarterback. He completed 14 of 22 passes for 218 yards and did not turn the ball over.
Rajan Cunningham ran for a team-high 74 yards and a touchdown and Jermond Lovely caught a pair of passes for 59 yards.
Ke’Shaun Jnofin led the team with nine tackles and James White added seven.
The War Hawks (1-6, 1-4) get out of the ASC basement and will look to build a winning streak when they host Texas Lutheran Saturday.
Cisco College (3-4, 1-4) fell at home to defending national champion New Mexico Military Institute 44-7 Saturday afternoon.
The Wranglers have lost three of their last four outings.
