Week 9 Rewind/Playoff Scenarios
OFF THE TOP
Things that caught my attention in Week 9:
Broken record alert, but shout out to the Abilene High defense for another amazing effort. Coronado had negative yardage deep into the third quarter in the 35-14 Eagle win. Freshman Brayden Henry is going to be a problem too, he scored his first two career varsity touchdowns in his first varsity start in QB as the Eagles put themselves in great playoff position.
Wylie and Cooper get shut out wins over Lubbock High and Plainview. The district title could be on the line in the Southtown Showdown in a couple weeks.
Congrats to Brownwood for beating Estacado 52-14 to clinch a share of its first district title since 2010.
Great win for Jim Ned at Breckenridge 32-25 to give the Indians a shot at a district title with a win over Vernon next week. Jim Ned has won five straight after an 0-3 start.
Early rolls Grape Creek 69-0 to set up a district title showdown at Wall next week.
Hawley stays perfect with a 34-7 win over Olney and matches Cisco at 4-0 atop the 4-2A D1 standings.
Stamford beats rival Anson 44-6, now gets set for a showdown at home against the Bearcats next week.
Congratulations to Monty Leaf for picking up his first win as head coach in Colorado City in the Wolves 38-8 win over Winters.
Albany dominates a beat up Roscoe squad 55-0 and all but clinches yet another district title
Big win for Cross Plains over Hamlin 54-19. The Buffs now have a great shot at a playoff berth out of the very competitive 6-2A D2.
Westbrook and Ira take command of the top of the 8-1A D2 standings with wins over Hermleigh and and Roby. They will play in Ira Friday for the district lead.
Gorman stays alive in the playoff chase with a 54-8 victory over Baird that will likely keep the Bears out of the postseason.
May takes down Santa Anna 60-14 to stay perfect.
Rule takes care of Paint Creek to move to 3-0 in District 7-1A D2.
Loraine tops Blackwell in a 28-8 defensive struggle to gain the inside track on the 13-1A D2 title.
Rising Star shuts out Paint Rock 50-0 to win its sixth in a row.
Blanket blasted Mullin 60-4 on Thursday and is tied atop the 15-1A D2 standings with Zephyr, who got a big win at Sidney Saturday night for their eighth win in a row.

BIG COUNTRY A TO Z
Abilene High (4-5, 3-2) smashed Lubbock Coronado 35-14 in a game not as close as the score might indicate to clinch a trip to the playoffs for the third straight season.
As mentioned above, the Eagle defense was dominant and held the high powered Mustang offense to under 200 total yards and kept them off the scoreboard until a couple of garbage time touchdowns when the game was out of reach. Tristen Hall picked off a screen pass and returned it 50-yards to aid the offense in the scoring department as well.
Freshman Brayden Henry got his first varsity start and ran for 105 yards and two touchdowns, a 31-yarder and a 45-yarder. Bam Rashaw added 109 yards and two scores from eight and three yards. The passing game was not much of a factor, as Henry only threw three passes and Dylan Slack went just 3 of 8 for 42 yards.
The Eagles sent 28 seniors out with a win in their Shotwell Stadium finale and will close the regular season at Amarillo Friday.
PLAYOFF SCENARIOS
The Eagles are in. A win will get Abilene High the three-seed out of the district in the playoffs and a loss will put them in the mix for the third or fourth seed.
Abilene Christian (6-2, 4-1) could not get the offense going in a 52-6 loss to defending state champ Fort Worth Covenant Classical.
The loss will likely sew up the district title for the Cavaliers, but the Panthers are still head and shoulders ahead of the rest of the district for the playoff chase.
PLAYOFF SCENARIOS
The Panthers are in and will visit Denton Calvary this week. ACS would clinch the two seed with a win and be the three seed if they lose. Denton Calvary still has to play FWCC in week 11 while the Panthers do not have a game line up at the moment.
Albany (6-2, 3-0) dominated an injury depleted Roscoe (5-3, 2-1) squad 55-0 in a game that could decide the District 6-2A Division I championship.
The Lions blocked a punt and Adam Hill returned it for a touchdown and then got an interception and a Hill running score shortly after to lead 14-0 less than three minutes into the game. Albany led 42-0 by the half.
Cole Chapman did not start but returned to action under center for the Lions after missing four games due to injury. He completed 5 of 11 passes for 105 yards and three touchdowns — two to London Fuentes (one a 92-yarder) and another to Hill. Hill ended up scoring three times in the game and Coy Lefevre ran for 94 yards and a touchdown.
Roscoe was without star starting quarterback Jax Watts due to injury and could not get much offense going against the powerful Lions.
PLAYOFF SCENARIOS
Albany is in and can clinch a district championship for the 14th time in the past 15 years with a win over Hamlin Friday.
Roscoe can clinch a spot with a win at Miles next week or a victory over Hamlin in the season finale. If they win out they will be the two seed in the playoffs.
Anson (2-7, 2-3) could not keep up with Stamford (7-1, 3-1), falling to their Jones County rivals 44-6 Friday night.
The Bulldogs led 6-0 after one and 14-0 at the half and turned it on in the second half to pull away for the win.
Christian Duran threw for 141 yards and four touchdowns, spreading the ball to four different receivers led by Quinton Pryor (3 rec, 54 yds, TD).
Hayden Henager ran for 76 yards and caught two passes for 34 yards and a one-handed, ankle breaking touchdown.
PLAYOFF SCENARIOS
Stamford is in and still in the mix for at least a share of a district title if they can beat unbeaten Hawley at home this week. The Bulldogs will be no lower than the three-seed from the district.
Anson is in the four spot at the moment, but will have to beat Cisco in their season finale this Friday to clinch playoff berth. If they lose and Olney beats Colorado City and Winters over the final two weeks, which they will be heavily favored to do, then the Cubs will leap the Tigers for the last spot from 4-2A D1.
Aspermont (7-1, 1-1) was off and will be gearing up for a home contest against Guthrie this week.
PLAYOFF SCENARIOS
The Hornets are currently tied with Motley County for the second and final spot from 5-1A D2 behind Jayton.

Baird (4-4, 1-2) dropped a key district game in the playoff chase at home to Gorman (6-2, 2-1) 54-8 Friday night.
The Bears were able to play past halftime but, as has been the case much of the season, could not put enough offense together to pull out the win.
PLAYOFF SCENARIOS
Gorman is still in the mix for the number two spot behind powerful Gordon. The Panthers visit Bryson (2-1) this week with the winner taking huge steps towards making the postseason.
Baird will have to win out against Gordon and Bryson and have some help to force a tiebreaker situation for the second playoff spot out of 9-1A D1.
Ballinger (0-8, 0-3) bounced back from three straight shutouts to play one of its best games of the season, but ultimately came up short in a 54-26 defeat at the hands of Brady (4-4, 2-2).
The Bearcats were tied with the Bulldogs at 26 at halftime but could not light up the board in the second half. They had only scored 40 points in seven previous games, so getting 26 in a half was a much needed improvement for the Bearcats down the stretch.
PLAYOFF SCENARIOS
Ballinger is winless on the season but still has a shot at the four seed if they can beat TLCA San Angelo and Grape Creek over the next two weeks.
Brady will likely be the three seed, but can still force a three-way tie for the district crown if they beat Grape Creek and Wall and Wall beats Early next week.
Bangs (5-3, 3-1) ran into the unbeaten Tolar Rattler buzzsaw and saw a five-game winning streak come to an end with a 59-0 home loss.
The Dragons and Rattlers were tied after one quarter, but Tolar (8-0, 4-0) scored 29 points in the second and cruised from there.
Guy Powell still topped the century mark with 108 yards rushing, but Bangs could only muster 191 total yards in the loss. Tolar star back Peyton Brown, just a sophomore, racked up 241 yards rushing and four touchdowns.
Powell led the defense with 13 tackles, while Nate Stoffer and Ethan Ethridge each added eight and Keygan Pitts chipped in with seven.

Tolar is in the playoffs and has clinched at least a share of the District 5-2A D1 championship.
Blackwell (4-4, 0-1) dropped its district opener in a 28-8 defensive battle at Loraine (7-1, 0-1).
The Bulldogs fell behind 8-0 early but did not allow another Hornet score while putting 28 points of their own on the board.
PLAYOFF SCENARIOS
Blackwell has another big game against 1-0 Bronte this week. Win that one and their finale against Trent and the Hornets will be playoff bound once again if Loraine wins out.
Loraine and Bronte have the early lead in the district standings and the Bulldogs can win their second straight district title with wins over Trent and the Longhorns in the season finale.
Blanket (7-1, 2-0) has won seven in a row.
The Tigers took care of Mullin 60-4, leading 44-4 by the end of the first quarter.

The teams were tied at 25 heading in to the fourth, and Jim Ned got the only touchdown of the final stanza on a five-yard Brayden Shipman run to earn the win.
Troy Doran completed just 3 of 11 passes for 32 yards but ran for 182 and a touchdown and Shipman added 119 and two scores to lead the Indian offense. Sophomore Trey Hicks topped the team with seven tackles and Davis Soben added six. Breydon Walker had an interception and Talon Famer recovered a key fumble in the second half.

Adrian Ruiz caught five passes for 57 yards and a touchdown and Zeke Castillo was the leading tackler with eight.
PLAYOFF SCENARIOS

Breckenridge is currently tied with Bowie for the fourth spot out of 3-3A D1 and they will play on the road against the Jackrabbits Friday night.
Brookesmith (1-7, 1-1) forfeited to Richland Springs to drop to 1-1 in district play. The Mustangs are battling numbers and injuries and are scheduled to face state-ranked Cherokee this week.
PLAYOFF SCENARIOS

Cisco (7-1, 4-0) did not play this week and will resume play Friday at home against Anson
PLAYOFF SCENARIOS
Cisco is in the playoffs and hopes to beat Anson to set up a shot at a district championship the following week at Hawley if the Bearcats beat Stamford. If Hawley were to fall, Cisco would still have to beat them to win the outright title and not share it with the Bearcats and Stamford.
Clyde (4-4, 0-3) took a big hit for its playoff hopes with a 21-14 home loss to previously winless Bowie (1-7, 1-2).
The Bulldogs were behind 7-0 after one quarter and at the half before the Jackrabbits added a score in the third quarter for a 14-0 lead.
Clyde rallied late but could not complete the comeback.
Bowie snapped a 15-game losing streak and keeps its playoff hopes alive.
PLAYOFF SCENARIOS
Clyde would need wins over Iowa Park and Breckenridge in the last two weeks of the season to have a shot at the postseason.
Coleman (6-2, 3-1) did not play. The Bluecats used the bye week to prepare for a home game Friday against De Leon.
PLAYOFF SCENARIOS

The Buffaloes and Pied Pipers are tied for the final playoff spot from 6-2A D2 and now Cross Plains has the upper hand.

If the Tigers win, then both Zephyr and Blanket are in the playoffs and their week 11 game will be for the district championship. A Sidney win means the Bulldogs would have to beat Blanket to avoid a three-way tie for first and the playoff spots coming down to a tiebreaker.
STILL PERFECT
Hawley and May remain as the only two unbeaten teams in the Big Country Blitz coverage area with 8-0 records after victories Friday night.
Now just ten more have one loss after Breckenridge fell to Jim Ned and Abilene Christian lost against Fort Worth Covenant Classical.

COLLEGE ROUNDUP
ACU (5-2, 2-0) was off this Saturday. The Wildcats, off to their best start since 2013, will resume play with a non-conference game at North Dakota this week.
Hardin-Simmons (6-1, 4-1) picked up its most lopsided win of the season with a 68-0 drubbing of Southwestern (2-5, 1-4) Saturday afternoon.
The Cowboys outgained the Pirates 398 to 182 and scored three times on defense as well. The Cowboy defense forced five turnovers and they also scored on a K.J. Peoples punt return.
Gaylon Glynn tossed a trio of touchdown passes, while Colton Marshall led the rushing attack with 44 yards and two scores and Kevi Evans caught two passes for 103 yards and two touchdowns.
Cade Michna led the team with ten tackles, while Matt Mitchell had a huge game with seven tackles, two sacks, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery for a touchdown and an interception.
Howard Payne (6-1, 5-0) was off this week and will get set for a huge ASC game at rival Hardin-Simmons on Saturday.
McMurry (1-7, 1-5) dropped a defensive battle with Texas Lutheran 17-10.
The War Hawks fell behind 7-3 after one quarter and 17-3 late in the fourth before scoring their only touchdown with :24 seconds left in the contest.
McMurry held TLU to just 165 total yards but could only muster 237 and lost the turnover battle 3-0.
Dexter Wyble tossed three interceptions and Andrew McBride entered the game late and led the War Hawks to their only touchdown when he hit Joseph Richard from two-yards out. Rajan Cunningham ran for 53 yards and also caught three passes for 61 yards.
Herman Lee led the defense with 12 tackles and Devin Nixon added ten.
McMurry will visit Sul Ross State on Saturday.
Cisco College (3-5, 1-5) played much better than it had in weeks but came up short at Tyler 21-17.
The Wranglers scored first to go up 3-0, but saw the Apaches answer with 14 in a row to get a lead they’d never give up. Cisco scored midway through the fourth quarter to get within four but could not come up with a game-winning drive.
The Wranglers have lost four of their last five outings.
