OFF THE TOP
Things that caught my attention in Week 11:
Hawley comes from behind to beat Cisco 36-33 in the final seconds in a game that lived up to its billing as one of the best in the state this week. We just may see these two meet again in the playoffs.
Wylie earns its first 5A district title with a 20-10 win over Cooper. This is the game I went to since Abilene High was off. Great crowd and atmosphere and great defense for the Bulldogs sealed it. Hayden Wright had three fourth quarter interceptions for Wylie.
Zephyr knocks off Blanket 38-30 to win district. What a turnaround for the Bulldogs: 0-10 last year to 9-1 and district champs in 2022.
Snyder wins a playoff game before the playoffs over rival Sweetwater 28-0 to punch a ticket to the postseason. The Mustangs wrap up a rough year at 1-9.
Roscoe sneaks past Hamlin 16-14 to earn a playoff spot. Cross Plains is in as well despite losing to Miles 49-21.
Albany and Jim Ned continued to cruise Thursday night and wrapped up district crowns with wins over TLCA Abilene and Iowa Park.
No playoff implications, but congrats to Ballinger head coach Ty Lang for getting his first victory as the Bearcats avoided the winless season.
Ira got past rival Hermleigh 38-24 to make the playoffs and send the Cardinals home with a 7-3 record.
Aspermont could not keep up with Motley County in a 64-16 defeat to miss out on the playoffs despite going 8-2 this season.
Throckmorton wins a district title battle over Rule in a big way 62-12.

BIG COUNTRY A TO Z
Abilene High (4-6, 3-3) was off in week 11 and resting up for the playoffs.
Amarillo High knocked off Monterey 35-14 Thursday to set the Eagles as the #4 seed from District 2-5A D1.
Abilene High will travel to El Paso to take on Del Valle Thursday night at 7 p.m. central time.
Abilene Christian (7-2, 5-1) did not play and got an extra week of rest before the postseason.
The Panthers will take on Dallas Lutheran (5-5) in the first round of the playoffs.
Albany (8-2, 6-0) wrapped up a perfect run through district play with a 67-0 victory over TLCA Abilene (0-10, 0-5) Thursday night.
The Lions returned three interceptions for touchdowns in the first half and scored on five one-play drives to build a 54-0 lead by the break.
The Albany starters played about a quarter of the game and got some rest ahead of their playoff opener.
The Lions will meet Eldorado Friday night at 7 p.m. in Sweetwater in the bi-district round.
Kudos to Jeremy Kirk and the Eagles for finishing out a tough season with such a young squad.
Anson (2-8, 2-4) finished its season in week ten and had its bye in week 11. The Tigers did not qualify for the playoffs.
Aspermont (8-2, 2-2) came up short of a playoff berth with a 64-16 loss at Motley County.
Turnovers really hurt the Hornets, who turned it over inside the Matador 30 four times in the contest.
The Hornets went from just two wins in 2021 to eight in 2022 to complete one of the better turnarounds in the area.
Baird (4-6, 1-4) came up just shy of a victory in a hard fought 38-36 loss to Bryson.
The game was tied at 26 at halftime and the Cowboys had just a little bit more than the Bears in the second half.
Ballinger (1-9, 1-4) saved its best for the last game of the season in a 55-21 win over Grape Creek.
The Bearcats earned win #1 for Ty Lang as head coach and avoided going oh-fer the 2022 season.
Ballinger jumped out to a 28-0 lead by the half and cruised to the victory.
Bangs (6-4, 4-2) could not keep pace with #10 Coleman (8-2, 5-1), falling at home to the Bluecats 47-0 in a game that decided the #2 seed from District 5-2A D1.
The Bluecats led just 7-0 after one quarter, but put 20 more points on the board in the second to take a commanding 27-0 lead into the halftime break.
Coleman gained 455 yards in the contest and limited Bangs to just 77—57 rushing and 20 passing.
The Bluecats racked up 337 yards on the ground led by Jadin Jackson with 141 and two scores and Ryland Gentry with 91 yards and two more touchdowns. Jackson also threw for 118 yards and two touchdowns, one each to Keaton Beets and Hagen Cavanaugh.
Guy Powell was limited to 42 yards rushing, the only time all season he’s been held under 100 yards in a game. The previous low was 108 against Tolar.
Coleman will take on Alvord in the first round of the playoffs Thursday at 7 p.m. at Fort Worth Castleberry.
Bangs will battle Nocona Friday at 7 p.m. in Weatherford.
Blackwell (6-4, 2-1) ended the regular season in style with an 86-22 win over Trent (5-5, 0-3) Thursday night.
The Hornets won five of their last six games to earn a trip to the playoffs, while the Gorillas went 0-4 down the stretch to miss out on the postseason. They did, however, complete their most successful season (five wins) since going 5-5 in 2014.
Blackwell will meet #9 Rising Star (9-1) in the bi-district playoffs Thursday night in Trent.
Blanket (8-2, 3-1) came up short in a district title showdown at Zephyr (9-1, 4-0), falling to the resurgent Bulldogs 38-30.
Zephyr goes from 0-10 in 2021 to 9-1 and district champs in 2022.
The game was square at 14 after one and at 22 at halftime. The Bulldogs scored twice in the third quarter to go up 38-22 and held on to pick up the win.
Tripp Ballard led the Bulldogs with 123 yards and a touchdown and Jayden Millican added 99 and three touchdowns.
Levi Vasquez topped the Tigers with 173 yards and a pair of sixers and Brayden Day chipped in 165 yards and two rushing scores and a touchdown reception.
Zephyr will meet Richland Springs in the bi-district round Friday in Goldthwaite, while Blanket draws unbeaten Cherokee Friday in San Saba.
Breckenridge (8-2, 3-2) jumped on the beat up Bulldogs of Clyde (4-6, 0-5) early and often on their way to a 50-20 victory.
The Buckaroos built a 30-6 lead by the break and cruised to the win to earn their second win in a row heading into the postseason.
Breckenridge ran for 261 yards and passed for 204 in the victory.
Cameron Escalon completed 8-10 passes for 204 yards and two scores and ran for another, while Sawyer Wimberley ran for 85 yards, Anson Rodgers added 72 and Jerry Lawson went for 83 and two scores. Rodgers also caught two passes for 81 yards and another touchdown.
Sophomore Tucker Jones threw for 313 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions to lead the Bulldogs. Connor Hawk (8 rec, 113 yds, 1 TD) and Austin Hastings (5 rec, 175 yds, 1 TD, 49 yds rushing) also had big efforts for Clyde.
The Buckaroos advance to the playoffs to meet 8-2 Paradise Friday at 7 p.m. in Ponder.
Brookesmith (1-9, 1-3) wrapped up the season with a 51-6 loss at Rochelle.
The Mustangs returned to the field after having to forfeit the previous two weeks.
Brownwood (8-2, 4-0) had a week 11 open date and will begin its playoff run against El Paso Irvin Thursday night at 7 p.m. at Ratliff Stadium in Odessa.
Cisco (8-2, 5-1) gave up a touchdown in the final seconds to fall at Hawley (10-0, 6-0) in a 36-33 thriller Friday night.
The final touchdown, a pass from Rodey Hooper to Will Scott with three seconds left, proved to be the only time the Bearcats led in the game.
The Loboes jumped out to a 12-0 lead before the Bearcats got on the board to trim the deficit to 12-8, but Cisco scored again to go up 19-8 at the break.
The game went back and forth from there as Cisco led 26-22 after three, 33-22 with nine minutes to go and 33-30 when Hawley scored with 5:27 left.
Hunter Long had another huge outing in the loss, throwing for 157 yards and three touchdowns and adding 225 yards and another score rushing. Carter Holton caught four passes for 143 yards and all three Long passing touchdowns.
Hooper went 17-26 for 328 yards and four touchdowns, seven of those for 133 yards and two scores went to Scott. Austin Cumpton ran for 86 yards and a touchdown.
The Bearcats outgained Cisco 426 to 405 and had two turnovers to the Loboes one.
Hawley is set to face Christoval Thursday night San Angelo while Cisco will meet Reagan County Thursday night in Colorado City.
Colorado City (1-9, 1-5) closed out its first season under Monty Leaf with a 45-0 loss to Stamford (8-2, 4-2).
The Bulldogs led the game 29-0 by the half, bouncing back in a big way from getting shut out by Hawley the week before.
Stamford moves on to the playoffs as the #3 seed from 4-2A D1 and will face 8-2 Forsan Friday night in Brownwood.
Cooper (5-5, 3-2) could not cash in on many a trip to the Wylie (7-3, 5-0) side of the field and ended up on the short end of a 20-10 final score.

Cross Plains (7-3, 2-3) could not keep up with Miles and dropped its regular season finale to the Bulldogs (8-2, 4-1) 49-21.
The Buffaloes trailed just 21-14 at halftime but the Bulldogs exploded for four second half touchdowns to pull away.
Hayven Book threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more to lead the Miles attack.
Cross Plains is the #4 seed from 6-2A D2 and will open the playoffs against 10-0 Wink Thursday in Big Spring.
Early (6-4, 4-1) closed the regular season with an easy 69-7 win over TLCA San Angelo to clinch the #2 seed from District 2-3A D2.
The Longhorns only scored seven against Wall last week but had no trouble scoring on the Eagles, leading 41-7 by the end of the first quarter and 55-7 by halftime.
Early racked up 507 yards of total offense, led by Jaxyn Price’s 243 yards and four touchdowns passing. Griffin Cheslock ran for 139 yards and two touchdowns and Jeremy Brown caught two passes, both for scores, and 65 yards.
Early advances to face 4-6 Odessa Compass Academy Thursday at 7 p.m. in Sweetwater.
Eastland (1-9, 1-4) completed its season with a 49-7 loss at district champion Comanche (9-1, 5-0). The Indians went just 1-9 last season but turned things around in a big way to go 9-1 in 2022. The Mavericks are not in the playoffs for the first time since 2008.
The outcome was never really in doubt as Comanche led the contest 29-0 at the half.
The Mavericks held Sawyer Wilkerson out of the end zone but the star Comanche sophomore running back still ran for 194 yards. He is at 2,113 yards and 23 touchdowns for the season.
Gorman (8-2, 4-1) eventually was able to pull away from Lingleville and make sure they’d be in the playoffs for a second straight season.
The Cardinals were within 37-29 in the second quarter before the Panthers went on a 46-6 run to close the game in an 83-35 win.
Nash Guthery led the Gorman attack with 133 yards and three touchdowns rushing and also threw for 70 yards and a touchdown pass. He also led the team, by a long shot, with 20 tackles in the game.
Joseph Rainey added two touchdowns and 47 yards rushing and Chase Ryff caught two passes for 39 yards and two scores.
Gorman will face unbeaten Union Hill in the bi-district playoffs Friday at 6 p.m. in Ferris.
Hamlin (5-5, 1-4) battled hard with Roscoe (6-4, 3-2) but came out on the short end of a 16-14 decision.
The Plowboys advance to the playoffs against McCamey (8-2) Friday in Stanton and the Pied Pipers miss out on the postseason. Year two under Chris Evans was much improved, however, as Hamlin jumped from 0-10 to 5-5.
Hamlin struck first in this one for a 6-0 lead, but Roscoe gained an 8-6 lead by the half.
The Pipers regained a 14-8 lead in the second half but the Plowboys went ahead to stay on a Parker Gleaton touchdown run.
Haskell (5-5, 3-3) was off this week and will resume action in the playoffs against Collinsville (9-1) Thursday at 7 p.m. in Jacksboro.
Hermleigh (7-3, 3-2) missed out on the playoffs for the first time since 2019 with a 34-24 loss to Ira (8-2, 4-1).
The Bulldogs are in the postseason and draw 9-1 Rankin in the first round Friday at 7 p.m. in Grady.
Ira led 16-0 after one quarter and 32-8 by the half, but Hermleigh rallied and pulled within 32-24 heading into the fourth quarter. However, Ira’s Bryton Partain scored the only touchdown of the fourth to seal the victory for the Bulldogs. He ran for 112 yards and two scores and also caught a 32-yard touchdown pass from Raidon Hernandez.
Tyson Digby led Hermleigh with 76 yards and two touchdowns rushing.
Highland (3-7, 2-3) closed its 2022 season on a high note with a 58-12 win at Roby (1-9, 1-4).
The Hornets led 14-0, saw Roby score to cut it 14-6, then reeled off 30 straight points to lead 44-6 midway through the second quarter on the way to the mercy rule win.
Highland outgained Roby 402 to 208, led by Cooper Bowen’s 131 yard, three touchdown rushing effort and also threw for 91 yards and a touchdown.
Brennan Faucett led the Lions with 55 yards and a touchdown and also threw for 65 yards, 47 of those on three catches to Dylan Lujan.
Jim Ned (7-3, 5-0) ended the regular season on a seven-game winning streak, taking down Iowa Park 31-13 Thursday night to clinch its third straight outright district championship.
The Indians led 10-5 at the half but fell behind 13-10 midway through the third quarter. They answered with three touchdowns of their own to put the Hawks away and pull out the victory.
Troy Doran threw for 130 yards and a touchdown and led the Tribe with 120 yards and two scores rushing. Brayden Shipman added 46 yards rushing and David Rodriguez caught one pass for 24 yards and the Indians lone touchdown through the air.

The Pirates started the season 2-1 but dropped their final seven games.
The Raiders snapped a four game losing streak but missed the playoffs for the first time since 2016.

Merkel (3-7, 2-3) came up short on the road at Millsap 38-18 to drop to the #4 seed for the playoffs out of 5-3A D2.
The Badgers jumped out to a 12-7 lead, but trailed 21-12 by the half and 28-18 after three and could not catch up.
The loss set the Badgers up against #2 Holliday (10-0) in the bi-district playoffs Thursday nigh at 7 p.m. in Graham.
Moran (0-10, 0-3) had to forfeit to Rising Star (9-1, 3-0) because they didn’t have enough healthy players to play the game.
The Wildcats will begin the playoffs against Blackwell Thursday night at Trent.
Ranger (2-8) ended the season with a 56-18 loss at Temple Centex Homeschool.
The Bulldogs end the season on a five game losing streak.

Santa Anna started the season 3-0 but dropped six of their last seven.
Snyder (4-6, 2-2) topped rival Sweetwater (1-9, 0-4) 28-0 to clinch a playoff spot and keep the Mustangs out of the postseason for the first time since 2018.
The Tigers led the game 21-0 by the half and used a dominating defensive effort, limiting Sweetwater to 177 yards and forcing four turnovers, to seal the win.
