OFF THE TOP
Things that caught my attention in Week 12:
Abilene 3, El Paso 0. The Eagles, Cougars and Bulldogs sweep bi-district action in dominant fashion by a combined 145-38.
Abilene High beat Del Valle 42-14 as freshman QB Brayden Henry goes 13-13 passing for 197 yards and 2 TD and runs for 90 more yards. Defense was lights out against a high powered Conquistador offense and didn’t allow points until the starters were pulled.
Cooper crushed Andress 49-20 to make it two teams with long but happy 444 mile road trips back to Abilene.
Wylie had no issues at home against El Paso High, taming the Tigers 54-14 to get their first 5A playoff win and sixth win in a row.
Brownwood beat down an El Paso team too, shutting out Irvin 63-0 in Odessa to advance.
Early, Hawley, Cisco and Coleman all roll to easy wins by a combined 215 to 15 to move on to the area round.
Merkel, Haskell and Cross Plains see their seasons come to an end to Holliday, Collinsville and Wink who entered the playoffs a combined 29-1.
May will not get another shot at going to Jerry World as they fall in a 104-91 shootout to Irion County.
Blackwell ends Rising Star’s dream season in a 68-40 decision.
Jim Ned makes it eight wins in a row by shutting out Pilot Point 41-0. Tough area game for the Indians against 10-1 Bushland coming up.
Close losses for Snyder and Stamford. The Tigers season ends 31-21 to Ferris in Cisco while the Bulldogs give up a late score to fall to Forsan 21-14 in Brownwood. Stamford improved from three wins to eight with a relatively young squad.
No surprise, Albany advances. The Lions roll Eldorado 49-13 at the Mustang Bowl. They are our only remaining 2A D2 team and will face Muenster in the area round. Albany has won at least one playoff game for now 20 STRAIGHT SEASONS!!!
Bangs comes up big, blasting Nocona 61-21 to move on. They'll get Riesel next.
Breckenridge (47-7 to Paradise) and Roscoe (42-6 to McCamey) suffer lopsided losses to see their seasons come to an end. The Plowboys should be better next year with many stars returning and the Buckaroos jumped from four wins to eight in 2022.
Defending champion Westbrook avenges their only loss of the year in a big way, blasting Garden City 72-22 to advance to play Buena Vista.
Ira hangs tough and goes the distance against state-ranked Rankin, falling 74-42.
Gorman drops a 48-6 decision against unbeaten Union Hill.
Loraine has no problem against Panther Creek in a 56-0 win at the half. They will draw Richland Springs next after the Coyotes took out Zephyr 61-16. Still a tremendous turnaround year for the Bulldogs who go from 0-10 to 9-2.
Rule is knocked out in a high-scoring 97-48 loss to Newcastle.
Blanket ends a successful first season under Michael Cherry with a 52-6 loss to unbeaten Cherokee.
Abilene Christian cruises past Dallas Lutheran 46-0 and will play 11-0 Lucas Christian in the next round.

BIG COUNTRY A TO Z
Abilene High (5-6) took down district champion Del Valle in El Paso Thursday night 42-14 to advance in the 5A Division I playoffs.
The Eagles shut down the powerful Conquistador offense, only allowing points late in the third quarter with the game out of reach and many starters already standing on the sidelines.
The game was scoreless until a trick play got the Eagle offense rolling. Tim Outlaw, a wide receiver, threw a touchdown pass to Jackson Howle from 24-yards out and Abilene High never trailed.
They added two more scores before the half and scored on three straight possessions in the third quarter and built a 42-0 lead.
Freshman quarterback Brayden Henry went a perfect 13 of 13 passing for 197 yards and added 90 yards rushing. Bam Rashaw picked up 104 yards and three touchdowns on the ground and Outlaw led the receivers with four grabs for 105 yards and a sixer.
The Eagles advance to face Red Oak in the area round Friday night at 7 p.m. at Vernon Newsome Stadium in Mansfield.
Red Oak beat Denton Ryan in overtime 28-29. They went for two and the win after scoring a touchdown in overtime.
Abilene Christian (8-2) advances in the TAPPS Six-Man Division II playoffs with an easy 46-0 victory over Dallas Lutheran at Trent Friday night.
The Panthers advance to the quarterfinal next to meet up with unbeaten Lucas Christian in the quarterfinals.
Albany (9-2) won a bi-district championship for an amazing 20th consecutive season with an easy 49-13 victory over Eldorado in Sweetwater.
The Lions jumped out to a 14-0 lead on a pair of Adam Hill touchdown runs. He added a third to make it 21-0 and Cason Fairchild caught two touchdowns in the second quarter from Cole Chapman to put Albany up 35-0 by the break.
London Fuentes returned the second half kickoff for a score and then returned a punt for a touchdown as well to put the Lions up 49-0.
Hill ran for 76 yards and the three touchdowns and Branson Beal went for 70 yards. Chapman completed 5 of 8 passes for 105 yards and two touchdowns. Fairchild hauled in three passes for 77 yards and the two second quarter sixers and also intercepted a pass on defense. Jayden Lucas topped the team in tackles with 13 and Wyatt Windham added 11.
The Lions will now face Muenster in the area round Thursday night in Graham.
Bangs (7-4) blasted Nocona 61-21 to advance in the 2A Division I playoffs.
The Dragons got four first half Guy Powell touchdown runs and led 41-0 at halftime and 48-0 in the third before the Indians got on the scoreboard.
Powell ended up running for 236 yards and five touchdowns as the Dragons outgained Nocona 473 to 389.
Guy Funk caught two passes for 68 yards and a touchdown. Kenny Cole was an efficient 6 of 9 passing for 98 yards and the touchdown and also ran for 100 yards and a score.
Bangs will face Riesel in the area round Friday night in Burleson.
Blackwell (7-4) took down Rising Star 68-40 to advance in the 1A Division II playoffs Thursday night in Trent.
The Hornets and Wildcats (9-2) were tied 12-12 after one but Blackwell pulled away a bit in the second quarter to lead 34-20 by the half. Rising Star got as close as 34-26 in the third but Blackwell answered with two straight touchdowns and the outcome was never in doubt.
Dathon Morris led the Wildcats with 107 yards passing and two touchdowns and ran for 20 yards and two more scores. Blake Wilson ended up with three catches for 42 yards and a touchdown and 61 rushing yards and a another touchdown. Jake Bell threw for 112 yards and a touchdown and topped the team with nine tackles and an interception.
The Hornets move on to face #2 Cherokee in the area round while Rising Star sees a very good season come to an end with a 9-2 record.
Blanket (8-3) saw its season come to an end with a 52-6 loss to #2 Cherokee in the bi-district playoffs.
The Indians led 22-0 by the end of the first quarter and went up 38-0 before Blanket scored it’s only touchdown on a kickoff return.
Cherokee moves on to face Blackwell.
Breckenridge (8-3) was blown out by Paradise 47-7 in one of the more surprising results of the bi-district round.
Paradise was good in the regular season but seemed to turn things up a notch in the playoffs to knock the Buckaroos out in the first round for the second straight season.
Breckenridge only trailed 8-7 after one quarter after Sawyer Wimberley’s 46-yard touchdown run, but the Panthers outscored them 11-0 in the second to go up 19-7 at the break. The score was 33-7 at the end of three and Paradise tacked on two more scores in the fourth.
Breckenridge only picked up 140 total yards in the game and allowed 390.
The Buckaroos finished above .500 for the first time since going 7-5 in 2015.
Brownwood (9-2) took care of El Paso Irvin 63-0 Thursday night, picking up its first playoff victory since 2019.
The Lions scored on the first play of the game, a 69-yard Ike Hall to Thad Hinds touchdown pass, on their way to a 21-0 lead after one and 42-0 lead by halftime.
Brownwood outgained Irvin 403 to 58, limiting the Rockets to just four first downs.
Konlyn Anderson ran for 145 yards and three scores and Hall threw for 156 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Case Markham returned a punt 80-yards for a touchdown and also returned an interception for a score from 20 yards out.
The Lions advance to face Canyon Friday in the area round in Midland.
Cisco (9-2) crushed Reagan County 55-0 to advance in the 2A Division I playoffs. The Loboes put their last-second loss to Hawley in week 11 behind them and jumped out a 28-0 first quarter lead on their way to going ahead 42-0 by halftime over the Owls.
Cisco outgained the Owls 555 to 89, rushing for 378 yards and passing for 177 more.
Hunter Long went 7 of 7 for 177 yards and three scores and added 141 yards and two more touchdowns on the ground. Cade Gayle caught three passes for 91 yards and two of the scores and Trent Huston picked up 122 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.
The competition ramps up for the Loboes in the area round as they’ll meet 11-0 Stratford Friday night at 6 p.m. at Lubbock Cooper. The Elks are the defending 2A Division II state champs and haven’t had any issues thus far moving up to 2A D1.
The Cooper Cougars (6-5) routed El Paso Andress 49-20 on the Eagles home field Thursday night and made the long drive home from Far West Texas a happy one.
The Coogs wasted little time taking command, leading 21-6 after the first quarter and 35-13 at the break.
Chris Warren threw for 272 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions and Daniel Bray topped the rushing leaderboard with 74 yards and two touchdowns. He also caught three passes for 130 yards and a score.
Cooper is now 18-0 all-time against El Paso schools in the playoffs. The Cougars will face Grapevine in the area round.
Cross Plains (8-3) saw a great season come to an end with a 60-0 loss to unbeaten Wink in the 2A Division II bi-district playoffs.
The Wildcats grabbed a 26-0 lead after one quarter and pushed it to 54-0 by halftime.
Wink outgained the Buffaloes 499 to 128 in the win.
The Buffaloes wrap up 2022 with a 7-4 record.
Early (7-4) earned a bi-district playoff win for the second straight season, cruising past Odessa Compass Academy 62-0 at the Mustang Bowl.
The Longhorns jumped all over the Cougars, scoring six first quarter touchdowns and cruising to the easy victory.
Early gained 446 yards in the contest. Jaxyn Price threw for 141 yards and four scores, two to Jeremy Brown who hauled in three catches for 57 yards and also returned a kickoff for a touchdown. Griffin Cheslock picked up 140 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
The challenge will be much bigger for Early in the area round when they meet up with state power Canadian.
Gorman (8-3) could not get past unbeaten Union Hill, falling 48-6 to see the 2022 season come to an end.
The game was a defensive struggle most of the way. Union Hill led 8-0 after one and just 14-0 at the half. It was 27-6 after three and the Bulldogs scored three more times in the fourth and kept Gorman off the board.
Gorman’s eight wins marked its best season since going 8-5 in 2018.
Haskell (5-6) battled hard with Collinsville but the four-seed Indians saw their season come to an end with a 21-7 loss in the 2A Division II bi-district playoffs.
Haskell trailed just 7-0 at the half but could not get on their scoreboard themselves until the fourth quarter.
The Indians finish 2022 with a 5-6 record.
Hawley (11-0) continued its perfect season with a 52-8 victory over Christoval in the 2A Division I bi-district playoffs Thursday night.
The Bearcats scored 30 first quarter points and led 45-0 by halftime thanks to three Austin Cumpton touchdown runs, a pair of Rodey Hooper touchdown passes and a Chandlin Myers kickoff return for a touchdown.
Hawley outgained the Cougars 280 to 101.
Hooper went a perfect 8-8 passing for 143 yards and two touchdowns. Cumpton ran for 88 yards and three scores on just eight carries and eight different Hawley receivers caught passes, led by Diontay Ramon with two grabs for 79 yards.
Hawley will move on to face Panhandle in the area round.
Ira (8-3) stayed right with state-ranked Rankin for a half and made the game go the distance in a 74-34 loss.
The Bulldogs trailed 8-6 after one but led 14-8 and 22-16 in the second quarter on a pair of Jaren Pena touchdowns.
The Red Devils led 42-28 by the half, however, and kept the Bulldogs at bay in the third and fourth quarters.
Rankin racked up 478 yards to the Bulldogs’ 359.
Aedyn Claxton threw for 282 yards and three touchdowns and Bryton Partain threw for two more.
Zane Allen caught eight passes for 162 yards and three scores and also led the team with 13 tackles. Demitri Juarez added nine.
Jim Ned (8-3) made it eight straight wins as they advanced past Pilot Point 41-0 Friday night.
The Indians did not allow Pilot Point to reach the red zone all night. They led 14-0 at halftime and opened things up in the second half, outscoring the Bearcats 27-0 on the way to the win.
Jim Ned only completed two passes in the contest and racked up 440 yards rushing, led by 205 and three touchdowns from quarterback Troy Doran and 139 from Brayden Shipman. Doran threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to David Rodriguez. Davis Soben was tops in tackles with 11, including two for loss, and Carter Lange collected two sacks.
The Indians move on to face 10-1 Bushland in the area round in Lubbock Friday.
Loraine (10-1) is moving on in the playoffs thanks to a 56-0 mercy-rule victory over Panther Creek in Blackwell Friday night.
The Bulldogs had a 24-0 lead by the time the first quarter ended and cruised from there.
Loraine has reached double-digits in the win column for the first time since going 11-2 and reaching the quarterfinals in 2013.
They draw state power Richland Springs in the area round this week at Irion County.
May (8-2) will not be playing for a state championship for the third straight season after falling in a 104-91 bi-district shootout to Irion County at Robert Lee Thursday night.
The Tigers had knocked the Hornets out of the playoffs in each of the previous two seasons and this time Irion County got a bit of revenge.
This one was a scoring fest from the start: Irion County led 20-16 after one and 60-55 at the half. May took their big lead at 75-60 in the third and led 83-74 after the third, but the Hornets owned the fourth quarter to pull away for the upset win.
The Tigers racked up 483 yards of total offense in the win, led by Luke McKenzie (170 yds, 6 TD passes) and Braden Steele (186 yds, 2 TD passes) through the air. Bryson Guerrero caught eight passes for 125 yards and a trio of touchdowns and Steele topped the rushing chart with 56 yards and a score. He also led the Tigers with 15 tackles.
May wraps up the year 8-2. They won their first eight games of the year before falling in their final two.
Merkel’s bi-district upset bid came up short in a 40-12 loss to #2 Holliday Thursday night in Graham.
The game was closer than the final score indicated, as the Badgers (3-8) were as close as 24-12 with about three minutes left in the third quarter. The Eagles were able to pull away late but Merkel put up a good fight against one of the top teams in the state.
The Badgers wrap up the 2022 season with a 3-8 record.
Roscoe (6-5) dropped a 42-6 decision to McCamey in the 2A Division II bi-district playoffs Friday.
The Plowboys trailed 20-0 by the half and did not get on the board until they trailed 42-0 in the fourth.
Roscoe turned the ball over five times in the loss.
Rule (6-4) dropped a 97-48 shootout to Newcastle to bow out of the playoffs in the first round for the second straight season.
The Bobcats pick up six wins in their first season under new head coach Caleb Barkowsky and end up over .500 for three years in a row for the first time since 2006-2008.
Snyder (4-7) saw its season come to an end with a 31-21 loss to Ferris Friday night in Cisco.
The Tigers led 7-0 after one quarter and were tied with the Yellow Jackets at 14 at the half. Snyder took a 21-17 lead into the final quarter but saw Ferris score twice in the final ten minutes to advance.
Snyder outgained Ferris 339 to 309 and got 111 yards rushing and a touchdown from Esteban Cabrera. Easton Stewart threw for 199 yards and two touchdowns, one each to Jay Castillo and Chon Vasquez.
The Tigers have now made the playoffs in three of their four seasons under Wes Wood.
Stamford (8-3) fell in a 21-14 slugfest to Forsan Friday night Brownwood to see the season come to an end.
The Bulldogs trailed 10-0 in the third before they finally got on the board on a Christian Duran one-yard run to pull within 10-6.
The Buffaloes added a field goal to lead 13-6 but Stamford took the lead on a Kaston Vega scoring run with only 54 seconds left on the clock.
However, Forsan answered with a 63-yard Cade Wallis to Brooks Wright touchdown pass to stun Stamford and advance in the playoffs.
The Bulldogs ran for 302 yards and outgained Forsan 406 to 297 in the loss.
Hayden Henager went for 150 yards rushing in his final game for the Bulldogs and Duran ran for 68.
Westbrook (10-1) avenged its only loss of the regular season when it really mattered, knocking Garden City out of the playoffs 72-22.
The Wildcats were up 36-14 by halftime and never let up on the way to a 66-22 lead heading into the fourth and the final touchdown that ended the game early.
Cedric Ware proved he was really back from injury, rushing for 354 yards and eight touchdowns in a dominating performance from start to finish. Grayson Jeffrey added 116 yards on the ground and Ware and Pahton Dominguez each caught a touchdown pass from Parker Matlock.
Dominguez racked up nine tackles, four for loss and Jeffrey added seven.
Buena Vista will be the Wildcats’ area round opponent Friday in Garden City.
Wylie (8-3) earned its first 5A playoff win in a big way, blowing out El Paso High 54-14 Thursday night at Hugh Sandifer Stadium.
The Bulldogs dynamic offense returned after two under their season average performances, scoring 21 first quarter points and 20 more in the second for a 41-7 halftime advantage.
KJ Long threw four touchdown passes in the first half alone as part of a 273 yard performance and Landry Carlton ran for 46 yards and two scores. Braden Regala led the team with seven catches for 120 yards and touchdown and Hunter Hood caught two touchdown passes that covered 59 yards.
The Bulldogs move on to the area round where they’ll meet up with Colleyville Heritage on the Panthers home field in the area round Friday night in Grapevine.
Zephyr (9-2) saw a very successful season end in the bi-district round of the playoffs as they fell to Richland Springs 61-16.
The Bulldogs nine-game winning streak came to an end but the nine victories were more than they had since picking up ten in a trip to the regionals in 2017.
Tripp Ballard led Zephyr with 82 yards and a score and picked up seven tackles. Karsen Floyd scored the Bulldog touchdown and led the team with nine tackles.

COLLEGE ROUNDUP
ACU (7-3, 3-0) routed Sam Houston State 45-28 in Huntsville Saturday afternoon.
The Wildcats outscored SHSU 21-7 in the first quarter and upped the lead to 38-14 by halftime thanks to three Bearkat turnovers and a punt block.
Sam Houston pulled as close as 38-28 in the fourth but the Wildcats answered with the final score of the game to put it away.
The Wildcats outgained the Bearcats 398 to 362, but the big number was just one turnover compared to Sam Houston’s four.
Ethan Long went 30-48 for 262 yards and four touchdowns passing. Kendall Catalon led ACU with 78 yards receiving on four catches, while Tristan Golightly caught two touchdowns and Kobe Clark (6 rec, 54 yds) and Rovaughn Banks (3 rec, 11 yds) each caught one. Anthony Smith was the leading rusher picking up 59 yards and a score. Dorian Plumley led ACU with seven tackles.
ACU’s seven wins are the most since they went 7-4 as a Division II program in 2012.
If the Wildcats can beat Stephen F. Austin in the regular season finale Saturday they’ll wrap up the WAC crown and likely earn a berth in the FCS playoffs for the first time.
Hardin-Simmons (9-1, 7-1) earned the 500th win in program history with a 45-16 victory at Texas Lutheran Saturday, but the best news was saved for Saturday when the Cowboys found out they’d earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs.
The Cowboys will play Trinity in San Antonio Saturday at noon.
HSU picked up nearly 600 yards, ending with 569, and limited TLU to 217 in the win Saturday.
The Cowboys led 24-13 at the half and extended the advantage to 38-16 by the end of three on the way to the win.
Noah Garcia returned to the Cowboy line up at running back and picked up 142 yards and two touchdowns. Gaylon Glynn threw for 214 yards with a touchdown and an interception and ran for 29 yards. Kevi Evans was the top receiver with six grabs for 72 yards. Terrell Franklin, Matt Mitchell and Jamel LaFond each charted six tackles. LaFond also had an interception.
Howard Payne (7-3, 6-2) rallied past Austin College 23-20 to end the season with seven wins for the second year in a row.
The upset minded Kangaroos (1-9, 1-7) were ahead 17-7 at halftime and 17-10 heading into the fourth. They kicked a field goal to lead 20-17 with just under three minutes to go but the Yellow Jackets drove 85 yards in 11 plays in the final minutes to go ahead to stay on a Landon McKinney to Otis Lanier touchdown pass.
McKinney threw for 240 yards and two scores and Lanier hauled in ten passes for 94 yards and a touchdown. He even sealed the game with an interception in the final seconds. Kyle Bell led HPU with 11 tackles.
McMurry (1-9, 1-6) wrapped up its season with a 62-3 road loss at ASC champion Mary Hardin-Baylor.
The War Hawks were outgained 451 to 102 in the game and did not get on the scoreboard until the fourth quarter.
Andrew McBride threw for 110 yards and two interceptions in the loss. Rajan Cunningham was the leading rusher with 18 yards and Nicholas Kuykendall was the top pass catcher with three grabs for 28 yards.
McMurry took a step back to one win in 2022 after going 2-7 in 2021. The War Hawks were hard luck losers by a touchdown or less in three of those games.
Cisco College (3-6, 1-6) wrapped up its season two weeks ago with a 26-7 loss to Navarro.
