OFF THE TOP

Abilene High recovered a fumble and scored a few plays later to take a 7-0 lead over defending state champ Aledo, but the Bearcats scored the next 56 points on their way to knocking the Eagles out of the playoffs for the second year in a row. Aledo got huge plays on the ground from Rayine Guillory and a 92-yard Gavin Beard to Kaydon Finley (a four-star recruit committed to Texas) touchdown pass. They also forced four Abilene High turnovers in the first half, one of them a pick-six. The Eagles wrap up the season with an 8-4 record.

Wylie didn’t have much luck in the Metroplex either, falling 56-21 to Anna in Godley Friday night. The Bulldogs trailed 42-14 at the halftime break and could not get off the field on defense enough make a second half run. Wylie ends a great season in which they won the District 2-5A Division II title with a 9-2 record.

Brownwood saw its season come to an end with a 49-14 loss to Canyon West Plains. The Lions could not stop the Wolves offense and turned the ball over five times to further hurt their cause. Brownwood wraps up the r year at 6-5.

Stephenville was in a battle with Hereford for most of the night before breaking things open late. The Jackets

Graham held Monahans to negative yardage until the final drive of the night in a dominating 63-6 effort to advance to the third round of the playoffs. The Steers have only allowed a combined nine over the past eight weeks. District foe Brock also cruised to an easy area round win, beating Lubbock Estacado 62-13 to move on.

Jim Ned is headed for the third round of the playoffs, thanks to a 35-7 win over Dalhart. The Indians got four rushing touchdowns from quarterback Gray Beasley and held the Wolves to just 224 yards of total offense. Paradise is up next for the Tribe, thanks to this last second touchdown to beat Bushland.

Wall and Tolar moved on with relatively easy wins over Childress and Bells. The Hawks get Littlefield next, who has blasted Friona and Crane to get to round three. Tolar has a big-time showdown with Holliday in round three.

Stamford got five touchdowns from Kaston Vega in a 48-13 route of Panhandle. The Bulldogs were only three-point favorites but jumped all over the Panthers early and often to improve to 12-0.

Cisco is up next for the Bulldogs. The Loboes pulled off the slight upset of Abernathy to make a trip to the regional round for the fifth time in six years.

Hawley got in a shootout with powerful Sunray, but came out on the short end of a 49-40 decision. The Bearcats season comes to an end with a 10-2 record.

Anson gave unbeaten Post all they could handle before coming up short in overtime 42-35. The Tigers rallied from a two touchdown deficit and took a two touchdown lead in the second half before the Antelopes tied it up and eventually won in OT.

Coleman and De Leon saw their seasons end with area round playoff defeats. The Bluecats rallied from an 0-7 start to win four straight but could not top Axtell in a 45-6 loss. De Leon hung around with unbeaten Mildred before falling 30-20 to end the year at 7-5.

Hamilton is third round bound thanks to a 27-14 over Frankston. The Bulldogs stay perfect so far this season at 12-0 and will battle 7-5 Kerens, who upset Tioga in round two, next week.

Albany continues to get stronger as the season goes longer, and Archer City was their latest victim. The Lions cruised into the regional round with a 48-14 win.

Goldthwaite’s late-season surge hit a speed bump in a 39-29 loss to Grapeland in Waco Friday night. The Eagles end the year at 7-5.

Westbrook didn’t quite score 116 again, but 98 was plenty enough to get past Newcastle and into the regional finals against Water Valley. The Wildcats pulled off a stunning 56-0 shutout of Knox City and are deeper in the playoffs than they’ve been since 2021, which was their last year of sixman football before they played 11-man in 2022 and 2023.

Gordon made quick work of Menard, beating the Yellowjackets 48-0 by the half to move on to the next round. They’ll meet Jonesboro in the regional finals next week.

Jayton took down Blackwell 60-8 to move to 12-0 on the season. The Jaybirds will get a shot to avenge last year’s season-ending loss to Benjamin next. The two-time defending champs got past Loraine to set up a showdown with Jayton.

Blackwell players hit the field with a heavy heart, mourning the death of longtime Hornet head coach Clint Lowry, who retired after the 2023 season. The Hornets went 5-7 in their first season under Wiley Cummings.

A nominee for the shootout of the week would be Strawn/Iredell. The Dragons outlasted the Greyhounds 91-90 to move on, while Strawn’s season ends at 8-3.

Zephyr could not get enough going in any aspect of the game to pull off the upset of Richland Springs. The Coyotes eased to a 64-6 win and will get another crack at Oglesby next week. The Tigers beat Cherokee 116-76 and knocked Richland Springs out of the playoffs a year ago on their way to the state championship game.

COLLEGE ROUNDUP

Stephen F. Austin 32, ACU 19

Wildcats Fall in Finale; Playoffs Ahead

The Wildcats fell behind 9-0 after one quarter and could never make up much ground in a regular season ending non-conference loss at Stephen F. Austin.

However, there was much better news on Sunday as ACU was selected to host Northern Arizona in the first round of the FCS playoffs on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Wildcats Will Host Northern Arizona in First Round of FCS Playoffs

Hardin-Simmons is set to face conference rival Mary Hardin-Baylor for the third time this season Saturday at 12 in the Division III playoffs. The Cowboys have beaten the Crusaders twice already this season.
