DISTRICT STANDINGS
STILL PERFECT
No changes this week as Albany, Benjamin, Clyde and Knox City all take care of business and Stamford did not play.
The Mustangs and Greyhounds are assured to stay perfect as they are both off next week.
Clyde has another big test, this time hosting Jim Ned. Albany visits Cross Plains and Stamford will play at a Cisco Loboes squad that has won three in a row to open district play.
We’ve added a graphic for the rest of the unbeaten teams in Big Country football districts this week as well. Congrats to Gordon, Jayton, Jacksboro, Richland Springs and Rochelle for staying perfect so far in 2023.
COLLEGE ROUNDUP
Hardin-Simmons 19, McMurry 16 - OT
Hardin-Simmons (4-1, 2-0) got a touchdown run by Colton Marshall in overtime to get past rival McMurry (2-3, 0-2) 19-16 Saturday night.
The War Hawks blocked two field goals in the game, including one on the last play of regulation to send the game to overtime. In OT McMurry scored first on a field goal to go up 16-13 and HSU answered to tie it, but the War Hawks were called for a penalty for leaping (basically hurdling the center at the line of scrimmage to try to block the kick). The Cowboys scored three plays later to knock off McMurry for the ninth straight time.
Former Cooper Cougar Noah Garcia ran for 65 yards and a score and Marshall, a Hawley product, added 49 and the game winning score. Anson grad Drew Hagler led McMurry with 48 yards rushing and a touchdown.
AJ Hawkins got his second start for the injured Gaylon Glynn and competed 22 of 29 passes for 185 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He also ran for a game high 84 yards. Tailon Garrett was the leading HSU receiver with nine grabs for 99 yards. KJ Peoples added seven for 47 and a touchdown.
Jess Hoel went 14-18 for 175 yards with a touchdown and a pick for the War Hawks. Kristopher Martin caught two balls for 86 yards, including a 58-yard touchdown.
HSU outgained McMurry 413 to 294, rushing for 228 yards and passing for 185. The War Hawks ran for 116 and threw for 178.
Sy Johnson was the leading tackler for McMurry with 11, while Demarcus Coleman topped HSU with six and had an interception.
The Cowboys will host Texas Lutheran next week for Homecoming, while the War Hawks will visit East Texas Baptist.
Howard Payne 28, East Texas Baptist 14
The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, extended it to 20-0 by the half and held off a second half Tiger rally to earn their first conference victory of the season.
ETBU pulled as close as 22-14 last in the third quarter but HPU shut them down in the fourth to get the win.
Landon McKinney completed 22 of 33 passes for 364 yards and four touchdowns. Gus Charles caught four passes for 136 yards and two of the touchdowns. KJ Kelly led the defense with nine tackles and a pair of interceptions.
Cisco 7, Northeastern Oklahoma A&M 3
The Wranglers beat the Norsemen by scoring a single touchdown for the second straight season. Last year Cisco win at NEO 7-6.
Cisco trailed 3-0 heading into the fourth quarter but scored on a Christian Kaopua to Corey Sandolph touchdown pass to get the win in the final period.
Kaopua threw for 105 yards with a touchdown and a pick. JaDarrius Thomas led the Wrangler rushers with 43 yards and Sandolph caught four passes for 65 yards and a touchdown. Malakhi Kellough led Cisco with nine tackles.
The victory keeps the Wranglers firmly in the chase for one of the four conference playoff spots with three games to go.
