Week 3 Rewind

Thoughts, stats, standings and much more on the third week of football in the Big Country, presented by Lawrence Hall Abilene.

OFF THE TOP

Abilene High put together a gritty second half, but could not fully overcome a 19-point deficit at Odessa Permian. The Eagles and Panthers both put on an offensive show, but Permian got a 4th down stop inside the 20 in the final minutes of the game to earn a 42-37 win. They were up 35-16 at the half.

Wylie put it all together on the road, winning at Lubbock Coronado 41-12 on Thursday night to improve to 2-0 on the season. The Bulldogs scored 34 straight after trailing 12-7 in the first half to win. Now they will get set for a showdown with 4A D1 #1 ranked Stephenville on Friday night.

Brownwood took it on the chin against Glen Rose at home Friday. The Lions were outgained 480 to 194 in the loss, their first of the season.

Cooper rallied from a 24-7 deficit at the end of the third quarter to take a 27-24 lead late in the game against San Angelo Central, but gave up a touchdown in the final minute to fall to the Bobcats 31-27. The Cougars drop to 0-3 on the season, and Central snaps a ten-game losing streak and earns win number one for new head coach Mark Smith.

Comanche flexed its muscle at Eastland, taking down the previously unbeaten Mavericks 36-14 to improve to 2-1. The Indians, coming up from 3A Division II to Division I, are looking like one of the best teams in District 3-3A through three weeks.

With my Abilene High color commentary duties done on Thursday, my daughter and I hit the road to Haskell and Anson for games on Friday. The Indians had no trouble with TLCA Abilene, jumping on the Eagles early and often in a 52-0 win. Anson was tied with Dublin 14-14 at the half but pulled away after the break to get to 3-0 on the season. Haskell and Anson will play each other next week in a big-time game in the Big Country.

Jim Ned trailed Wall 17-0, but came back to take the lead in the fourth quarter. However, the Hawks, down 24-23, went for two and the win and got it to beat the Indians in a 25-24 classic. The Indians fall to 1-2.

Ballinger has officially turned things around in year three under Ty Lang. The Bearcats blew out TLCA San Angelo 61-6 to improve to 3-0. Their schedule is not the toughest, but getting three straight wins after two tough seasons has to be great for the proud program. The Bearcats have given up a Big Country best 16 points this season.

Munday is also 3-0 after winning on the road at Chico. The Moguls, like Ballinger, went 0-10 last season and have yet to taste defeat in 2024.

Albany is in the win column after blasting Seymour 35-7. The Lions played their first opponent that is the same size as them this season and, surprise, surprise, came out on top.

Photo: May Tiger Teams

May had its showdown with state-ranked Rochelle moved to Saturday because of a referee shortage and put another show, moving to 3-0 under new head coach James Ball with an 85-40 win. Ben Harrell continues to put up ridiculous numbers this season for the Tigers, and his hurdle in this picture is pretty legit as well.

Reports that Hermleigh would have a tough 2024 season due to losses to graduation have been false so far. The Cardinals cruised past Loraine to stay perfect with another quality win.

Trent is in the win column for the first time this season and for the first time for new head coach Slater Isbell thanks to a 43-34 victory over Priddy.

Fisher County is having a pretty good start to the season, as both Roby and Rotan have winning records thus far. The two have had rough goes of it over the last two years, but Rotan beat Rule and Roby won at Blackwell last week to make them a combined 4-1 through three weeks.

The longest winning streak in the state came to an end in a shootout Friday when Benjamin fell 86-68 to Borden County. The Mustangs battled hard against the bigger Coyotes but came up short in a game that went the distance.

Ira earned a nice bounce back win over Robert Lee 44-38 in one of the better six-man games in the Big Country this week. The Bulldogs are 2-1, with their only loss to unbeaten Spur.

Woodson is 3-0 for the first time since 2014, after the Cowboys beat Guthrie 82-47. The Cowboys have plenty of weapons all over the field and have already matched their win total for the entire 2023 season.
