Week 5 Rewind
Thoughts, stats, standings, and much more on the fourth week of football in the Big Country, presented by (insert your business name here and get exposure across the entire Big Country).
OFF THE TOP
First off, prayers for continued recovery for the Panther Creek player that was injured and taken by helicopter after suffering an injury in the first quarter of the Panthers game against Paint Creek. The Pirates won the shortened game 12-0 when it was called midway through the opening quarter.
District play started in a good way with wins for Abilene High (55-14 over Caprock), Wylie (49-14 over Wichita Falls Legacy), and Haskell (22-19 over Petrolia), while Cooper (24-7 to Wichita Falls Memorial) and Munday (57-12 to Archer City) dropped their district openers. Many area districts (six by my count) will be on open dates for week six and will fire up in week seven.
Roscoe earned its first victory of the season in decisive fashion, pulling off a 26-6 upset (according to spreads) over New Home. The Plowboys were one of the more hyped up teams in the area in the preseason and look to finally be getting on track after facing a very tough non-district schedule.
Breckenridge, Merkel, TLCA Abilene, Blackwell, Lueders-Avoca, Panther Creek, and Throckmorton are the last seven area teams still looking for a win this season.
Brownwood is back? The Lions scored more points (37) in their win at China Spring than they had the first three games combined (33) to improve to 2-2 on the year. Brownwood still has one more non-district game before beginning District 4-4A Division I play. They will meet Ingleside (4-1 on the season, in the Corpus Christi area) in San Antonio this week.
Jim Ned continues to make their games worth the price of admission, beating stat-ranked Holliday 17-15 to improve to 3-2. The Indians last three games have been decided by a combined five points!
Hawley stayed perfect, but barely. The Bearcats pulled out a 22-21 win at Eastland to get to 5-0. The Mavericks have been battle tested and look to be one of the top contenders with Tolar in District 5-3A Division II.
Anson suffered its first defeat as the Albany Lions slowed down the top-ranked Tiger offense in a 27-17 decision. Albany has now won three in a row after season opening losses to Stamford and Hawley.
Stamford, by the way, continues to dominate, blowing out 3A Henrietta on the road 55-14.
Miles entered the state rankings last week (#8 in 2A Division II) but likely won’t be there long. The Bulldogs led Ozona 28-14 heading into the fourth quarter, but gave up three touchdowns over the final 12 minutes to fall 34-28.
Hamlin continues to make opponents “Pay The Piper,” especially on defense. The Pipers shut out Quanah 18-0 and have not allowed a point over the last ten quarters of action.
Loraine picked up a big road win 66-46 at Aspermont, giving head coach Mark Weaver a win in his return trip to the place he coached for six seasons.
Baird got back in the win column in a big way, beating Roby 64-0 in a game between teams that entered the contest at 3-1.
Gustine is still perfect on the season at 4-0 after holding off Brookesmith in a 76-66 shootout. The Tigers have already matched their win total from last season when they went 4-5.
Highland took down Nolan County rival Blackwell 66-44 to snap a two-game losing streak. The Hornets, of the Highland variety, are off this week and will open district play against Hermleigh.
Speaking of the Cardinals, they suffered their first loss of the year, becoming the latest victims of the Jayton Jaybirds. Jayton won 68-22 on the road to improve to 5-0 on the season.
The rest of the area six-man powers powered on as well. Gordon, May, Cherokee, and Richland Springs beat their opponents 226-28 and all stay perfect so far in 2024.
May has impressively won five games against five ranked teams, with Iredell becoming the latest victim in a 62-12 decision.
Blanket continues to have the best six-man scoring defense in the Big Country after allowing absolutely nothing to Throckmorton in a 64-0 win. The Tigers have only allowed 22 points all year and have shut out three opponents.
Westbrook fell in a tough battle of state-ranked squads at Buena Vista 42-36 Friday. The #4 Wildcats fall to 2-2, while the #9, and likely moving up, Longhorns are 5-0 and looking like one of the favorites to win not only their district, but Region I of 1A D1.
