OFF THE TOP
The big schools that played at home in Abilene Friday night certainly gave the scoreboard operators a workout. Wylie put 70 points on the board in a 70-28 win over Palo Duro to move to 3-0 in district play, while Abilene High beat Lubbock Coronado 59-40. The Eagles, playing without Brayden Henry for most of the game with an injury, still racked up over 500 yards of total offense once again, led by a five touchdown effort from Ryland Bradford. Wylie scored on its first nine possessions and picked off Palo Duro quarterback Julain Reese six times! The Bulldogs have a huge one next week at Wichita Falls Memorial as they look to stay perfect in District 2-5A Division II play.
Speaking of putting points on the board, Sweetwater scored a single-game program high 90 in their shutout win over TLCA San Angelo. It only took the Mustangs 1:51 in the first quarter to go up 22-0 thanks to a pair of pick-sixes and a fumble return on a kickoff. Sweetwater ran four plays of offense, scoring on all four, to lead it 43-0 by the end of the first quarter.
Things will be much tougher for the Mustangs next week when they visit Comanche. The Indians knocked off Jim Ned 13-10 in overtime in one of the best games of Week 7.
Stamford and Hawley continued on their Week 11 collision course with district opening victories. The Bulldogs blew out Cisco 41-14 at home, while the Bearcats earned a 26-7 road win at Anson.
Albany continues to be the team to beat in District 7-2A Division II. The Lions took down Miles 47-15 at home to win their 20th straight win district game.
Hamlin earned its third straight shutout win, winning at Winters 27-0. The Pied Pipers have not allowed a point over their past 14 quarters of action.
Roscoe is picking up the pace at the right time of year. The Plowboys blew out Cross Plains 46-7 to get district started with a win to improve to 2-3 after dropping their first three games of the season.
Brownwood came up short on the road in a 30-20 loss to Lampasas. The Lions saw a two-game winning streak come to an end in their district opener.
De Leon played a very tough non-district schedule and it seems to have paid off. The Bearcats blew out Hico 56-0 on the road to start district play and looks like one of the teams to beat in the very tough 5-2A Division I.
Coleman may be winless, but the Bluecats are getting closer to breaking through. Coleman came up a touchdown short in a 21-14 loss at unbeaten and 10th ranked Hamilton. Prediction: the Bluecats overcome their rough start and end up as a playoff team this season.
Ballinger kept pace with De Leon and Hamilton in the district with a 33-12 win at Bangs. The Bearcats trailed at halftime, but put together a huge second half to snap a two-game losing streak.
Tolar continues to look like the team to beat in 5-3A Division II after shutting out Early 56-0, but the rest of the race could be very close. Clifton slipped past Eastland 14-13, and Brady got past Dublin 34-31 in a pair of district opening thrillers.
Munday put themselves back in the playoff chase in District 6-2A Division II thanks to a 20-13 win over rival Haskell. The Moguls dropped their first two district games by a combined 119-12, but turned it around against the Indians. Haskell falls to 1-2 in the district and will need to pull off some upsets down the stretch to reach the postseason.
Goldthwaite continues to win big. The Eagles froze up Frost 69-28 to get to 3-0 in district, tied with #1 Mart for the 10-2A Division II lead after three weeks of play. They have a bigger test coming up Friday night at Bremond.
Hermleigh, Ira, and Westbrook kicked off district action with easy wins over Highland, Roby, and Rotan. Those three look like the cream of the crop and three teams battling for the two playoff spots out of District 7-1A Division I.
Blanket and Zephyr flexed some muscle to win District 13-1A Division II openers. The Tigers took down previously unbeaten Gustine on the road 59-13, while the Bulldogs picked off Rising Star seven times in a 45-0 win on the road.
Our area top-ranked teams continued to roll. Gordon, #1 in 1A D1, shut out Lingleville 53-0, while Jayton, #1 in 1A D2, took care of Paint Creek on Thursday 56-6 to stay perfect on the season.
Aspermont got a big win over Rule 66-22 at home Thursday to make its case as the second playoff team out of District 8-1A D2.
Bronte earned one of the bigger upset wins of the week, taking down Loraine on the road in a 62-61 thriller to start District 6-1A Division II play. The Bulldogs seemed to be on a bit of a roll after back-to-back wins over Aspermont and Ira, but came up short against a Longhorn squad that entered the matchup at 1-5. Blackwell kept pace atop the district with an easy win over Olfen, and Trent had the night off.
Cherokee has found itself in some big-time shootouts over the past two weeks, beating Marble Falls Faith 99-93 Friday after falling to Benjamin 106-88 the week before.
Abilene Christian kicked off district play with a 54-8 win over Weatherford Christian. The schedule gets harder (again) next week against Crowley Nazarene Christian.
