OFF THE TOP
Abilene High got basically a walk-off free kick return for a touchdown from Ryland Bradford to beat Tascosa in a class at Shotwell Stadium Friday night. The Rebels were in a situation to punt up 29-23 with :32 seconds to play and decided to take a safety and then kickoff. Fortunately for the Eagles, the Rebels kicked it to Bradford and the rest is history. The Eagles stay perfect in district play and can clinch a second straight outright title next week at Monterey.
Cooper continued to play well with its back against the wall, pulling away from Wichita Falls Legacy 45-21 on the road to get to 2-3 in district play. The Cougars are off this week and can clinch a playoff spot for the 18th year in a row with a win over Palo Duro in Week 11.
Wylie did not play, but got a little help in the district race with Wichita Falls Memorial’s thrilling 44-43 win at Lubbock Cooper. The Maverick win puts Wylie all alone in first place in 2-5A Division II with a chance to get at least a share of the district crown with a win at home over Lubbock Cooper in a massive game on Friday night.
Brownwood is in the win column in district play thanks to a 31-30 overtime win at home over Burnet. The Lions stopped a Bulldog two-point try in overtime to seal the victory.
One of the great games coming up this week will be Brock at Graham. Both teams cruised past their opponents Friday night, Graham 37-0 over Mineral Wells and Brock 80-13 over Burkburnett, and will clash for the district crown this week.
Sweetwater used a huge second half to get past Clyde 51-14 and take over sole possession of first place in 3-3A Division I. The game was just 18-14 at the half, but the Mustangs took advantage of several Bulldog mistakes in the third quarter to pull away for the win. Sweetwater, Clyde, Jim Ned and Comanche are all but locks for playoff spots but will be playing for positioning over the final two weeks of the season.
Merkel put forth its best offensive effort of the season but came up short in a 39-31 loss to Stanton. The Badgers, still winless on the year, are still alive in the playoff chase and their game at Grape Creek this week is a must-win.
Brady and Tolar eased to district victories to improve to 3-0 in District 5-3A Division II. These two 7-1 teams will meet in Tolar this week in a game that should decide the district title.
Dublin is now in the playoff race thanks to a 35-28 win over Eastland, which is the third loss in a row to start district for the Mavericks. Eastland and Early still have a shot to get in, but will have to turn things around over the final two weeks of the season. They face off in a playoff elimination game Friday night at Early.
Hawley earned one of the more impressive wins of the week, shutting down the powerful Cisco offense on the road in a 41-0 decision. The Bearcats and Stamford, who blew out TCLA Abilene 58-6, continue to be on a collision course for a Week 11 district title showdown.
Anson shut out Olney on the road 45-0 to all but assure themselves of one of the four playoff spots from 4-2A Division II. The Tigers host Cisco this week in a game that will likely decide the three seed in the postseason from the district.
Coleman is in the win column this season and firmly in the playoff mix after winning 14-6 at Hico. The Bluecats snapped a seven-game losing streak to start the season and will visit Ballinger this week in a game with huge playoff implications.
Hamilton and De Leon continue to be the class of District 5-2A Division I. The Bulldogs shut down Bangs 46-8 while De Leon beat up on Ballinger 55-13. Both teams are now 3-0 in district play and will likely meet with the title on the line in Week 11.
San Saba improved to 3-0 in district, cruising past Harper 49-13. The Armadillos visit Holland in Week 10, and with a win can set up a district title showdown against also unbeaten Mason in Week 11.
Haskell’s playoff hopes took a big hit with a 55-7 loss at Windthorst, coupled with Archer City’s eyebrow-raising 63-0 win over previously unbeaten Electra. The Indians sit in fifth place in the district at the moment with one game to go, which will be in Week 11 at home against Electra.
Albany took care of Cross Plains 62-12 and Roscoe whipped Winters 59-6 to set up a showdown for the 7-2A Division II lead this week. Miles shut out Hamlin 41-0 to clearly stake its claim as a top three team in the district. Hamlin will look to bounce back at home against Cross Plains this week in a game that, like 2023, will more than likely decide the fourth playoff team from the district.
Goldthwaite dropped a second straight district game, falling to Wortham in a 44-36 shootout. The Eagles are now tied for third in district with Wortham and Frost. They beat Frost earlier this season, and should still be in pretty good shape to reach the playoffs with at least a split in their final two games against Meridian and Mart.
Knox City knocked off a game Bryson squad 56-24 to stay atop the District 6-1A Division I standings. They have a big one at Perrin-Whitt this week, and a win will give them the outright district title.
Hermleigh and Westbrook stayed perfect in District 7-1A D1 play, while Ira stayed in the playoff mix with easy wins on Friday night. The Cardinals and Bulldogs earned shut out wins, while Westbrook won 58-8 over Highland. Hermleigh and Ira face off this week in a game that will likely decide a playoff spot.
Water Valley took over first place in District 8 with a hard-fought 62-50 win over Robert Lee. The Wildcats are in the drivers seat with two games to go. Robert Lee visits Veribest in a game with huge playoff implications this week.
Baird handled Ranger 60-12 to get to 3-0 in district. They’ll get a shot at top ranked Gordon for the District 13 championship this week. The Longhorns had the week off.
District 14 returned from a bye week with a pair of big district games. May topped Santa Anna and Jonesboro took care of Lometa, putting the Tigers and Eagles on a collision course for a district title deciding showdown in Week 11.
Loraine took care of Trent 65-16 to stay in the playoff chase in District 6-1A Division II. The Bulldogs and Bronte are the current leaders, but Blackwell and Trent, both 1-1, still have a shot at claiming a postseason bid. Trent hosts Bronte this week, with the winner staying in the race and the loser eliminated.
Benjamin returned from a bye week with an easy 60-0 win over Chillicothe. The Mustangs visit Crowell (2-0) next week in a game that should decide the district championship.
Paint Creek’s playoff hopes took a big step back in a 68-54 home loss to Rule. Jayton and Aspermont look like they’ll be the two teams from the district that make the playoffs.
Strawn and Woodson got the district portion of their schedules off on the right foot with blowout wins over Throckmorton and Moran. The Cowboys and Greyhounds meet in Week 11 in what could be a game to decide the District 9 race.
Unbeaten Three Way was off and fell behind Iredell in the District 11 standings at the moment. The Dragons moved to 3-0 in district play with a 70-24 win over Kopperl and will visit Three Way in a huge game this week.
District 13 looks like it will belong to Zephyr when the dust settles. The Bulldogs forced nine turnovers to hand Blanket its first loss of the year 58-14. The Tigers are still in great shape for the playoffs. They are off this week and wrap up the regular season at home against Sidney, who lost to Rising Star 44-6 Friday night.
Richland Springs and Rochelle stayed unbeaten in District 15 and will meet this week to decide the district title. The Coyotes got a forfeit win over Panther Creek, while Rochelle took down Brookesmith on the road 60-16.
Cherokee got a forfeit win over Pawnee to kick off district play and will host 2-6 Buckholts this week.
Abilene Christian was off and will resume district action against 2-6 Keller Harvest this week before wrapping up the season with a big one against district leading Fort Worth Covenant.
