Week 10 Rewind

Thoughts, stats, standings, and much more on the 10th week of football in the Big Country, presented by (insert your business name here and get exposure across the entire Big Country).

OFF THE TOP

Wylie picked up a share of the District 2-5A Division II title and the top seed in the playoffs with a defensively dominating 22-6 victory over Lubbock Cooper. The Bulldog defense allowed just two field goals and did enough on offense to get the job done. Wylie can make a perfect run through district with a win at Plainview next week.

Abilene High saw an 11-game district winning streak come to an end with a 31-17 loss at Lubbock Monterey. The Eagles wrap up the regular season at 7-3, and most likely will be the two seed from 2-5A Division I in the playoffs — which lets them avoid a bi-district road trip to El Paso.

Brownwood battled well with Stephenville in the first half, but saw the Yellow Jackets turn a 13-0 lead into a 44-0 final score in the finale Stephenville game held at Tarleton State. The Jackets have earned at least a share of the district crown, while the Lions need to beat Marble Falls next week to clinch a playoff spot.

Graham flexed its muscle in a big way, handing previously #2 Brock its first loss as a 4A team 38-0. The Steers dominated from the opening kick and have yet to allow a point in district play. They have five straight shut outs and shut outs in seven of their nine games this season.

Comanche (72-6 over TLCA San Angelo), Jim Ned (45-6 over Clyde), and Sweetwater (43-13 over Breckenridge) took care of business to set up a very interesting final week of the season in 3-3A Division I. The Mustangs still have the inside track at the title with a win over the Indians at the Mustang Bowl next week.

Merkel gave it a great effort for a second straight week, but the Badgers remain winless on the season after falling to Grape Creek 14-12.

Tolar is your 5-3A Division II champ after beating Brady 42-21. The Rattlers have had little trouble adjusting to life as a Class 3A school.

Eastland picked up a key district win in a thrilling 33-31 quadruple overtime win over Early. The Longhorns have lost eight in a row, but still have a shot at the playoffs with a win next week.

Hawley and Stamford both breezed past their opponents to improve to 9-0 and set up the showdown we’ve all been waiting for in Week 11. The #1 Bulldogs got the running clock started in the first quarter, seriously, and beat Olney 64-0 while the #5 Bearcats rolled past TLCA Abilene 48-0.

Anson clinched the three seed from the very competitive District 4 with an eye-brow raising 59-14 win over Cisco. The Loboes will still be playoff bound if they can beat Olney in Week 11.

De Leon and Hamilton both won big Friday and will play for the District 5-2A Division I title in De Leon this week. The Bearcats shut out Bangs 56-0, while the Bulldogs shut out Hico 36-0. What a matchup it will be for the Marwitz brothers, Jacob the head coach at De Leon and Ryan the head coach at Hamilton.

Coleman started the season 0-7 but, as predicted in a Weekly Rewind a few weeks back, has won two in a row to make the playoffs. The Bluecats won a defensive battle at Ballinger 14-7 Friday. The Bearcats face Hico this week in a game that will decide the four seed from the district.

San Saba lost a 44-41 thriller at Holland, but can still force a three-way tie for the District 14-2A DI title with an upset win over Mason next week.

Haskell did not play this week but remains in the playoff mix at 2-3 in District 6-2A Division II. Munday fell to Seymour 38-20 to see its season come to an end at 4-6, a much improved mark over their 0-10 2023 campaign.

Albany got the best of Roscoe again to sew up the top seed from District 7-2A Division II. The Lions have won 23 district games in a row and can earn the outright district title with a win over Hamlin next week.

Roscoe will battle Miles, who shut out rival Winters 55-0, in another big game to decide the two-seed.

Hamlin is playoff bound after sneaking past Cross Plains at home 27-24. The Buffaloes nine-year playoff streak will come to an end.

Knox City lost a tough battle to Perrin-Whitt 48-42 as the Pirates kept the Hounds from clinching the outright district title.

Ira earned a huge win over rival Hermleigh, 58-50, to keep playoff hopes alive. The Bulldogs finish the season at Highland and will be in the playoffs with a win. Westbrook shut out Roby 51-0 to stay in the district lead.

#1 Gordon took care of Baird in a big way, 62-0, to claim the District 13 crown. The Longhorns have shut out four straight opponents and six of their last eight opponents. Despite the loss, the Bears are still playoff bound and finish their first regular season under Dale Means at 7-3.

May and Jonesboro took down Lometa and Santa Anna to set up yet another huge game between the two next week. Both teams are playoff bound, and the winner will take the district title.

Loraine rolled past Olfen 55-7 to wrap up their regular season at 6-4 overall and 3-1 in district. The Bulldogs lead the district at the moment, but Blackwell and Bronte can tie them at 3-1 with wins in Week 11. If that happens, Loraine (+1) will be the two seed behind Blackwell (+22), and Bronte will be left out.

Benjamin wrapped up at least a share of the District 7-1A Division II championship with a 70-24 win over Crowell. The Mustangs can win the outright title by beating Harrold in Week 11.

Jayton is the outright District 8 champion thanks to a 54-0 win over Aspermont. The #1 Jaybirds wrap up the season at 10-0 and await their bi-district playoff foe (likely Crowell). Aspermont will be a playoff team with a win over Paint Creek next week. Paint Creek beat Lueders-Avoca Thursday night 61-0 as Shannon Waters’ Pirates beat his brother Donnie’s Raiders. The Pirates ensured their first winning season since Waters’ junior year in 1994.

Strawn and Woodson punched their playoff tickets. The Greyhounds shut out Moran to get in, while Woodson earned a forfeit victory over Throckmorton, which is their first victory over their county rivals since 1974!

Iredell handed Three Way its first loss of the season and wrapped up the District 11 title, 60-23. The Braves can punch their playoff ticket with a win over 2-7 Morgan in the season finale.

Photo: Derrick Stuckly/Brownwoodnews.com

Zephyr took down Sidney 48-0 on Halloween to stay perfect in district play. The Bulldogs can clinch the District 13 title with a win over Gustine next week. The Tigers and Blanket Tigers are in the mix for the playoffs as well. Gustine beat Rising Star Friday, while Blanket enjoyed the week off.

Photo: Dency McClure/Texas 1A Fan

Richland Springs is at least co-champs in District 15 thanks to a 51-6 win over Rochelle. The Coyotes can wrap up a perfect regular season with a win over Lohn next week. Rochelle will be a playoff team, too, because they face Panther Creek in Week 11. The Panthers decided to finish the season as a JV team a few weeks ago and will give the forfeit win to the Hornets.

Cherokee took care of Buckholts 52-0 and will face Calvert next week for the district title. Both teams are already in the playoffs.

Abilene Christian clinched a playoff spot with a 45-25 win over Harvest Christian Friday night. The Panthers can force a three-way tie for the TAPPS Division II District 1 title with a win over Fort Worth Covenant next week.
