ABILENE, Texas — The Wylie Bulldogs wrapped up spring football drills Wednesday with a pair of workouts.

The Bulldogs are coming off their best season ever as a Class 5A program, going 10-4 with a trip to the state quarterfinals, and are hoping to use the spring to build toward a great 2023.

Clay Martin, heading into his fourth season as head coach of the Bulldogs, said, “Our spring has been very productive and we got a lot of things accomplished. We have a new defensive coordinator (Matt Kates, who went 83-61 in 13 years as head coach at La Grange) and had a lot of install to do. Maybe a little bit different looking spring than the ones we’ve had previous but I just felt like the kids had a great attitude and we got a lot accomplished.”

Kates replaces Bryan Hill as defensive coordinator at Wylie. Hill left this offseason to take over as the new head coach at Midland Greenwood.

“Coach Kates has stepped right in and done a great job,” said Martin. “He’s someone with a great background and great resume. He’s got all that stuff from a football standpoint, but as I’ve gotten to know him he’s a great man and someone that’s come in with a lot of energy. He’s excited to be here and has hit the ground running and done a great job so far.”

The Bulldogs first real game action this season will be at home against Brownwood on August 25.
