Blitz Picks December 26

I guess I should label it Blitz Pick since there is only one team left: Abilene High.

6A DIVISION II REGIONALS

Abilene High (6-4) vs Denton Guyer (9-2) - Saturday, 3:15 p.m. - Globe Life Park, Arlington

Winner vs Eaton (9-3)/Prosper (7-3) - Saturday, 11 a.m. - Globe Life Park, Arlington

The Eagles have had to get past quite a few negatives this season, namely an 0-3 start with head coach Mike Fullen off the sidelines while battling cancer. He continues to fight, and so does his team as they find themselves playing some very rare, likely unprecedented, post Christmas football. They are the only District 2-6A team left in the playoffs after getting past El Paso Eastwood in a 42-35 shootout and North Crowley in a 12-7 defensive struggle.

Now they face quite possibly their toughest test of the season thus far in Denton Guyer, who is ranked No. 13 in the state in the Dave Campbell’s Texas Football/AP Class 6A rankings. The Wildcats knocked out Coppell 52-24 then eliminated Arlington 38-31 in the area round.

Guyer is on a four-game winning streak, while the Eagles are one better and riding a five-game streak.

History

The Eagles are in the third round for the first time since 2016, while Guyer is coming off a trip to the 6A Division II title game a year ago where they lost to Austin Westlake 24-0.

The Wildcats are aiming to reach their fifth state title game since 2010 — they won back-to-back 5A Division I championships in 2012 (beat Georgetown 48-37) and 2013 (beat San Antonio Brennan 31-14) and lost to Cibolo Steele 24-21 in the 2010 6A D2 championship to go along with the loss to Westlake a year ago.

Abilene High beat Katy 28-17 to win it all in 2009 and also have state titles in 1923, 1928, 1931, 1954, 1955 and 1956. A win gets the Warbirds into the fourth round for the first time since 2011 when they fell to Mansfield Timberview 32-6.
