Week 17 Rewind
Two state title games and a big-time playoff win for Abilene High are all we have to discuss on the Week 17 Rewind, but what a week it was — especially for Jim Ned. The season now goes as the Eagles go!
MOVING ON
Abilene High 12, North Crowley 7
The Abilene High Eagles are the last team standing in the Big Country after they gutted out a 12-7 win over North Crowley in Stephenville Friday night. The Warbirds are, somewhat surprisingly, the last team still alive from District 2-6A after Midland Lee fell to Euless Trinity 56-49 and Permian lost to Southland Carroll 38-7 in Division I and San Angelo Central was knocked out by Eaton 40-16 in Division II.
Abilene turned in one of their better defensive performances of the season to advance, limiting North Crowley to just seven points and 230 yards of total offense after giving up 35 points and nearly 500 yards to El Paso Eastwood the week before. The Eagle offense struggled but did just enough, getting a pair of field goals from quarterback/kicker Abel Ramirez and a touchdown toss from Ramirez to Pooh Johnson in the fourth quarter for what proved to be the game winning touchdown.
Now Abilene High will face their biggest test of the postseason as they meet Denton Guyer at Globe Life Park on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats’ only losses this season were to Denton Ryan, ranked #1 in 5A Division I and still in the playoffs, and Allen, #4 in 6A and still in the postseason. Guyer got past Arlington 38-31 last week to advance to meet the Eagles.

IN THE BOOKS
JIM NED: The Indians pulled off a great comeback to beat Hallettsville for a second time this season and bring home the 3A Division I state championship Thursday night at AT&T Stadium. Jim Ned came from 21-0 down in the second quarter to win it 29-28 in overtime. I wrote much more about their first state football title here: Jim Ned Wins State!
MAY: The Tigers lost to Sterling City twice this season, their only two losses, as they dropped the 1A Division I state championship game on Wednesday. May was a very enjoyable team to cover this season. Here are photos and more from their championship game I posted earlier this week: May vs. Sterling City Photos
