Blitz Picks - Week 3

WEEK 1 PICKS: 30-40, 75%
WEEK 2 PICKS: 34-44, 77.3%
SEASON: 64-84, 76.2%

A little improvement. Not too shabby. Happy I was able pick a couple of “upsets” like Breckenridge over Childress, Clyde over Eastland and Merkel over Stanton. Wish I had some do-overs on some games as well.

On to week three, where we have five matchups between unbeaten teams, ten games featuring a winless team against an unbeaten team and three matchups of winless teams among the games in the Big Country in the high school ranks.

Abilene High (1-1) at Midland Legacy (1-1)

The Eagles bounced back from their week one loss to Permian with a 14-10 win over Cooper in the Crosstown Showdown, now they hit the road for the first time this season to face another old district foe. Midland Legacy is coming off a somewhat surprising 48-27 loss to Tascosa (who looms on the Eagles’ schedule in a key district game on September 30) to fall to 1-1. The Rebels handed Abilene High its only district loss a year ago, winning 42-33 at Shotwell Stadium, and they return some big-time talent like cornerback Canyon Moses (who has committed to Arizona) and quarterback Marcos Davila (who has dozens of D1 offers including Baylor, TCU and Texas Tech). The Eagles were dominant on defense and significantly better on offense against Cooper after picking up just 48 yards and three first downs (tied for a program record low) in their week one loss to Permian. They’ll have to take another big jump to contend with the Rebels on the road. Legacy leads the all-time series 34-23.

San Angelo Central (1-1) at Cooper (0-2)

Cooper is still looking for win number one on the season as they welcome 6A San Angelo Central to Shotwell Stadium Friday night. The Coogs will play their first true road game next week but, before that, they’d love to pick up a victory on their home field. Cooper came up shy in a 14-10 decision against Abilene High last week, while the Bobcats won a 52-49 shootout at home over El Paso Montwood. Central fell on the road at Killeen Shoemaker 31-24 in week one. The Cougars have been in both of their games deep in the fourth quarter but haven’t been able to pull out a victory, but that should change this week against the Bobcats. This is the first meeting between the two schools since 2013 and Central has the all-time edge 27-20-1.

Lubbock Cooper (1-1) at Wylie (2-0)

The Bulldogs have turned some heads with their hot start, winning 30-24 at Brownwood and following it up with a 30-0 victory at Lubbock Monterey. Now Wylie gets to play at home for the first time and they’ll have to face a team that’s been a thorn in their side over the past few seasons. Lubbock Cooper is not a district foe for the Bulldogs now, but they beat them in district play every year from 2018-2021 and have a 5-0 all-time lead in the series. They won 27-8 at Dumas in week one but fell to Frenship 36-33 last week. Wylie seems to be getting back to their pre-jump-to-5A selves this season, and knocking off the Pirates would be a big step in proving they have arrived at the 5A level.

Brownwood (1-1) at Burnet (1-1)

The Lions head back to Burnet County for a second straight week, hoping to build on a week two beat down of Marble Falls. Brownwood jumped all over the Mustangs 55-16 last week to even its record, now they get set to face a Bulldog squad that is coming off a 29-21 loss to Llano. The Lions have beaten Burnet two years running in non-district play and are big favorites to do it again Friday night on the road. Brownwood is a perfect 6-0 all-time against Burnet.

Canyon Randall (1-1) at Snyder (2-0)

The Tigers moved to 2-0 with a 21-7 win at Levelland last week and will have to step their game up as they welcome a bigger program to town Friday night. Canyon Randall drops to 4A this season after years on the 5A level and brings a 1-1 record with them to their matchup with the Tigers. The Raiders beat Clovis, NM last week 35-10 but lost 11-7 to Andrews in week one. Snyder will likely need to put more points on the board this week than they have over the first two games, but their defense has been very good thus far, allowing just three touchdowns through two weeks. This is the first ever meeting between the teams on the football field.

Pecos (1-0) at Sweetwater (0-2)

The Mustangs lost at home to San Angelo Lake View at home last week 39-25 and now hope to defend the Mustang Bowl against former district opponent Pecos. The Eagles had their bye week to start the season but picked up a 12-0 victory at San Elizario in week two. Pecos was originally scheduled to host this game, but their new stadium is not quite ready so they hit the road once again this week. The Mustangs beat the Eagles last season 61-37 at the Mustang Bowl. Sweetwater has dominated the all-time series, leading 25-2.

#6 Cisco (2-0) at Breckenridge (2-0)

This would be the game I’d want to see in the Big Country if I wasn’t going to be in Midland for the Abilene High game (shameless plug, listen/watch our stream of the game here). Cisco and will make the short drive to Breckenridge to take on a Buckaroo squad full of confidence after a 35-8 road victory at state ranked Childress. The Loboes, up a spot to number six in the latest 2A D1 rankings, have to be quite confident themselves after taking down Wall on the road 18-14. Cisco prevailed over the Bucks 28-27 in overtime at home a year ago to run their winning streak in the series to seven. The Loboes haven’t lost to the Buckaroos since 1999, but they did not meet from 2000 to 2014. The matchup this time around should be another great one, as the Buckaroos look to continue turning heads across the state and the 2A Loboes look to go to 3-0 against class 3A competition in non-district play.

Merkel (1-1) at Clyde (1-1)

Both the Badgers and Bulldogs earned shut out victories last week to get to 1-1, Merkel 15-0 at home over Stanton and Clyde 26-0 at home over Eastland. Merkel has only allowed 20 points so far this season, but Clyde has the edge on offense after two weeks averaging 19.5 points per game to the Badgers 13.5. I expect a close game throughout in this one with the Bulldog offense being able to do just enough to get a win on their home field. The two teams are playing for the first time since 2019. Clyde has won seven in a row but Merkel leads the series 33-24-2.

Jim Ned (0-2) at Wall (1-1)

The Indians continue their tough slate in non-district action with a road trip to Wall this week. Jim Ned has losses to Hawley and Holliday, who were both ranked #5 in their respective classes at the time, while Wall beat Eastland 49-20 in week one before falling to Cisco 18-14 last week. Until Jim Ned gets healthy they’re going to continue to have a tough time in 2022. Ballinger is coming off a rough 48-0 loss at state-ranked Coleman, while Stamford beat rival Haskell last week 28-9. Stamford has not started 3-0 since 2018, while Ballinger hasn’t started 0-3 since 2016. According to Lonestarfootball.net, this is the first meeting between the programs since 1989. Early (1-1) at Comanche (2-0)

Early ran into a buzzsaw against Tolar last week, dropping its home opener by a surprising 51-14 margin. The Longhorns road does not get any easier as they head to unbeaten Comanche to face an Indians squad that has already surpassed its win total from 2021. Early entered the season with high hopes but has not been sharp through two weeks. They’ll need to refocus to pick up a road win at Comanche. Dublin fell to Fort Worth Christian 61-23 in week one and 55-14 at home to powerful Albany a week ago. The Wolves offensive output has been better through two weeks than the past few seasons, but the defense, giving up 48 points per game so far, will have to step up to beat the Cougars. Christoval lost 7-0 to Eldorado in week one but bounced back last week with 30-10 victory over 3A D2 Grape Creek. The two teams are meeting for the first time since 2017. The series is tied 1-1.

#3 May (2-0) at Knox City (2-0)

May is back on the road this week after a 77-46 home win over private school power Austin St. Stephen’s. Their next challenge may be their toughest of the season so far at Knox City. The Greyhounds have been impressive through two weeks, 45-ing the defending 1A D2 state champ Strawn in week one and then doing the same to 1A D2 runner-up Motley County last week. May routed the Greyhounds 65-16 at home last year but barely got past them 60-56 in 2020. The Tigers are 4-0 all-time against the Hounds.

The Eagles dropped a 75-30 decision to Lingleville in their opener but knocked off Gustine last week 68-22. The Wildcats and Eagles will meet for the first time in football Friday.
