Week 2 Rewind

Maybe we can get a feel about which teams are the best in the area after two weeks, but there’s still plenty of time for teams to right the ship before district play begins.

OFF THE TOP

Things that caught my attention this week:

  • Breckenridge blasting #7 Childress on the road 35-8 to move to 2-0

  • Clyde getting in the win column with a shut out win over Eastland

  • Cisco coming up clutch with a win at Wall

  • Hamlin earns victory number one for Chris Evans as Pipers head coach

  • Zephyr snaps a 15-game losing streak

  • Trent moves to 2-0 for the first time in nine years

  • Brownwood blasts Marble Falls to get to 1-1

  • Wylie shuts out Monterey on the road to stay perfect

  • Winters earns an upset road win at Eldorado

  • Abilene High does enough on offense and plays some amazing defense to win the Crosstown Showdown

  • Stamford knocks off rival Haskell to remain unblemished

BIG COUNTRY A TO Z

Abilene High went with Dylan Slack as the starter at quarterback and he delivered, helping the Eagles get just enough on offense in a 14-10 win over Cooper in the Crosstown Showdown to improve to 1-1 on the year. The Warbird defense was the biggest story, however, as they held the Cougars (0-2) under 200 yards and put pressure on Cooper quarterback Chris Warren time and time again to snap a three-game losing streak in the series. Slack went 25-35 for 184 yards with a touchdown pass and an interception in his first varsity start. Bam Rashaw ran for 78 yards and a touchdown and Demarco Upshaw led the Eagles in receiving with 6 catches for 66 yards and a score.

Abilene Christian hung with Hermleigh (2-0) on the road, but the the Cardinals came out on top 52-38 to stay perfect on the season. The Panthers (1-1) played very well in the first half and led the game 24-16 at the break, but Hermleigh came out of the locker room strong in the third quarter to rally for the victory.

#1 Albany wasted no time taking it to Dublin in a dominating 55-14 road victory to move 2-0. Albany scored 21 points in the first quarter on a one-yard Coy Lefevre run and 85 and 25-yard touchdown runs by Adam Hill and never looked back. Hill ran for 246 yards and three touchdowns and caught a touchdown pass as well. The Lions ran for 411 yards and racked up 595 total yards in the victory.

Anson fell behind Archer City 14-0 in the first quarter and could not dig out of the hole, falling 34-17. Joe Castles led the Wildcat attack with four touchdown passes. Anson (0-2) got as close as 27-10 in the third quarter, but Archer City answered to put the game out of reach early in the fourth quarter.

Aspermont hit the road Thursday night and outlasted Southland 72-55 to improve to 2-0 on the young season. The Hornets are perfect through two games for the first time since 2018 and looking like a possible playoff team out of District 5-1A Division II.

Baird is on the board with its first victory of 2022. The Bears (1-1) shut out Moran (0-2) 50-0 on the road in the first meeting between the schools since 1957 (shoutout to Caleb “The Goose” Galvan, voice of the Bears, for that nugget of information). Baird led 44-0 at the break and scored first in the second half to end the contest in the third quarter.

Ballinger dropped to 0-2 while Coleman improved to 2-0 when the Bluecats shut out the Bearkats 48-0 Friday night. Coleman led 30-0 at the half and held Ballinger just 30 yards of total offense while going over 400 themselves. The Bluecats scored just seven points in a week one win at Mason, but turned up the heat on that side of the ball in the win over the Bearcats. It was the largest margin of victory from either side in the series since 1951.

Bangs played well against a bigger opponent for a second straight week, but came up shy of an upset with a 42-18 loss to Comanche (2-0). The Dragons (0-2) scored first and led 6-0 after the first quarter, but the Indians scored 29 unanswered in the second quarter to go up 29-6 at the half. Guy Powell ran for 208 yards and both Bangs touchdowns in the loss.

Blackwell bounced back from a week one home loss to Aspermont with a 48-0 blowout win at Eden. The Hornets (1-1) were the underdog against the 1A D1 Bulldogs but wasted little time time proving they were the top team in this matchup.

Blanket evened its season record at 1-1 with a 40-12 road win at Bryson. It is victory number one in the career of head coach Michael Cherry.

Breckenridge picked up one of the most impressive victories for a Big Country team in week two their their 35-8 victory at #7 Childress. The Buckaroos jumped out to a 21-0 lead and never looked back to get to 2-0 on the season. Chase Lehr threw for 150 yards and two touchdowns, Anson Rodgers ran for two scores and Jerry Lawson added another. The Bucks are 2-0 for the first time since 2018 and will likely be considered for the 3A DI top ten that comes out later today.

Brookesmith dropped a 24-8 home decision to Kopperl to fall to 0-2 on the season.

Brownwood evened its season record at 1-1 in a big way, blowing out Marble Falls 55-16 on the road Friday night. The Lions led 17-0 after one and 27-8 at the half on their way to the easy victory. They doubled up the Mustangs offensive output 402-201, getting 79 yards rushing and 189 passing from quarterback Ike Hall. Konlyn Anderson scored three touchdowns and ran for 69 yards in the victory.

Cisco continues to impress. The Loboes earned an 18-14 victory at Wall to get to 2-0 on the season. The Hawks led 14-12 at the half but would not score again. Cisco went ahead in third quarter 18-14 and made the lead hold up to win their second straight over Wall in the series. Trent Huston scored a pair of touchdowns to lead the Loboes offensive attack.

Clyde earned a 26-0 shutout victory over Eastland (0-2) to improve to 1-1 on the season. The Bulldogs gained 450 yards on offense and only allowed 73 in the runaway victory. Clyde quarterback Blake Carr threw for 175 yards and three touchdowns and added 175 yards and a touchdown on the ground as well.

Colorado City fell to 0-2 with a 50-13 loss at New Home. The Wolves offense picked up 388 yards, but allowed 567 to the Leopards (1-1).

Cross Plains won a battle of unbeaten teams, 27-6 over De Leon. The Buffaloes (2-0) and Bearcats were tied 6-6 at the break, but Cross Plains dominated the second half on its home field to pull away for the win.

Early fell behind early and could not recover in a 51-14 home loss to Tolar. The Rattlers, a very good team in the 2A D1 ranks, dominated the 3A D2 Longhorns, jumping out to a 42-0 lead on their way to the win. Jaxyn Price threw for 214 yards and two touchdowns but also threw a pair of picks in the loss.

Gorman rolled to a 61-12 win at Evant to improve to 2-0 on the season. The Panthers have outscored their first two opponents 119-24.

Photo: Gary Ford

Hamlin snapped a 12-game losing streak with a 6-2 win at Water Valley as Chris Evans earned his first head coaching victory with the Pied Pipers (1-1). Water Valley (1-1) scored 80 the week before against TLCA Abilene, but the Hamlin defense held the Wildcats under 100 yards of total offense and their only points came via a safety on a bad snap for a punt. Hamlin took a 6-2 lead on a Clayton Rister touchdown run and held on the rest of the way.

Photo: Stamford Athletic Booster Club

Haskell (1-1) could not win its second straight over rival Stamford, falling on the road to the Bulldogs 28-9. Stamford (2-0) led 14-0 after one and 20-7 at the half on its way to victory. The Bulldogs are unbeaten through two weeks for the first time since 2019. Kason Vega ran for 77 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Bulldog attack on offense. Marquise Johnson threw for 98 yards and ran for 64 more to pace the Indians, who lost three fumbles in the ballgame.

Hawley had no trouble knocking off Lubbock Roosevelt 33-0 at Hugh Sandifer Stadium in Abilene. The game was moved to Abilene because of very wet field conditions, and the Bearcats (2-0) made it their home away from home by jumping out to a 13-0 lead after one and a 33-0 advantage by the half. Austin Cumpton led the Bearcat attack with 131 yards and two touchdowns rushing.

Highland dropped to 0-2 with a 36-26 loss at Throckmorton (1-1). The Hornets have lost to very good 1A D2 teams the first two weeks of the season.

Ira shut out Paint Creek (1-1) 50-0 on the road Friday night to get to 2-0 on the season. The Bulldogs followed up an impressive victory over defending 1A D2 state runner-up Motley County with Friday’s win over the Pirates. Ira has outscored opponents 104-6 so far this season.

Banged up Jim Ned dropped to 0-2 on the year with a 41-19 home loss to #5 Holliday (2-0). The Indians have suffered losses to a pair of state-ranked teams over the first two weeks, and it won’t get any easier in week three at Wall. The Eagles led 21-0 after one quarter and 41-7 by halftime on their way to the win.

Photo: David Gonzales

Loraine is off to a 2-0 start after taking care of Crowell 56-8 at home Thursday night. The Bulldogs got another great effort from AJ Williams, who ran for 123 yards and six touchdowns. Xander Ybarra, Malaki Williams and Josiah Lujan also scored for Loraine. Williams led the way on defense with 11 tackles, while Wrangler Little added ten.

Photo: Todd White

Lueders-Avoca and Santa Anna did not play their scheduled game. It goes down as a 2-0 forfeit win for the Mountaineers (2-0) over the Raiders (0-2).

May moved to 2-0 on the season a hard-fought 77-46 win over Austin St. Stephen’s. The Tigers led just 38-32 at the half, but pulled away in the second half to knock off the defending TAIAO state champs. Damian Salinas paced the Tigers with a monster performance, running for 298 yards and six touchdowns and racking up 11 tackles on defense.

Merkel earned victory number one the season with a 15-0 home defeat of Stanton. The Badgers and Buffaloes were scoreless going into the fourth quarter, but saw Joey Zink and Maddox O’Malley hook up for their third touchdown connection of the young season to go ahead for good. Elijah Olivarez added the other Merkel score to put the game out of reach. Zink threw for 110 yards and ran for a team high 64. O’Malley had four catches for 76 yards. Olivarez paced the defense with 12 tackles, while Jose Flores and Jonathon Calderon each added six. Connor Willyerd came up with a key interception in the second half.

Ranger fell to 0-2 with a 52-6 loss at Gordon. The Longhorns (2-0) look to be a very good team this season and a challenger for a district title in District 9-1A Division I.

Rising Star fell at home to Sidney 50-44 to drop to 1-1 on the season. The Wildcats got 116 yards and a touchdown rushing from Dathon Morris, who also threw for 74 yards.

Roby could not get anything going offensively in a 52-2 home loss to Lubbock Kingdom Prep. The Lions (0-2) are still looking for win number one under new head coach Israel DeLeon.

Roscoe was off with a week two bye. The Plowboys (1-0) visit TLCA Midland Saturday.

Rotan (0-1) battled a COVID outbreak last week and had to cancel its scheduled game at Lingleville.

Rule picked up a hard fought 43-40 victory over Bronte Friday night in its first game of the season and first game under new head coach Caleb Barkowsky. The Bobcats and Longhorns battled back and forth all night, with Rule taking the lead for good on a score with just over three minutes left in the game.

Snyder hit the road and knocked off Levelland 21-7 to improve to 2-0 on the season. The Tigers spotted the Lobos a touchdown, but scored the final 21 points of the game to pick up the road victory. Snyder is 2-0 for the second straight season under Wes Wood.

Sweetwater led San Angelo Lake View (2-0) 19-6 after one but could not hold the advantage, falling to the Chiefs 39-25. It marked the Mustangs first loss to Lake View since 1983, a 20-game streak. Sweetwater (0-2) trailed 27-25 late in the third quarter but could not stop the Chiefs in the fourth.

TLCA Abilene fared better in week two than they did in their season opener, but fell at Munday (2-0) 58-30 Friday night. The Eagles (0-2) trailed 53-2 at the break but put together some scoring drives in the second half. Freshman Jonathan Rico scored a pair of touchdowns for TLCA.

Trent is 2-0 on the season after knocking off Lohn 67-34 Thursday night. The Gorillas are unbeaten after two weeks for the first time since 2013 when they ended up 4-6. The Gorillas led 21-12 after one and 41-18 at the break on their way to the win. Breyden Lewis ran for 184 yards and two touchdowns, while Brian Crouch ran for 97 and three scores. Hayden Payne threw for 98 yards and a pair of touchdown passes, one each to Crouch and Ian Harris. Harris led the Gorilla defense with 10 tackles.

Photo: Sandy Sheets

Westbrook earned another win over a highly ranked opponent, taking down #4 Jonesboro (1-1) on the road 30-14 Thursday night. The top-ranked Wildcats (2-0) led just 8-6 at halftime but outscored the Eagles 22-8 in the third quarter to earn the victory. Cedric Ware ran for 160 yards and three touchdowns and Grayson Jeffrey added 68 and a score on the ground and also threw for 36 yards. Parker Matlock led the Wildcats with 12 tackles and had an interception, while Pahton Dominguez racked up 11 tackles and forced a pair of fumbles.

Winters battled past Eldorado 18-12 in overtime to even its record at 1-1 on the season. The Blizzards were 40 point underdogs but bounced back from a rough week one home loss to Cross Plains to get the win. Chris Martinez hooked up with Aidan Bryant on the game-winning touchdown pass in overtime.

Photo: Olivia Raymond/HubCityPreps.com

Wylie dominated Lubbock Monterey 30-0 to get to 2-0 in 2022. The Bulldogs led 14-0 after one, 21-0 at the half and racked up 470 yards in the game to 280 for Monterey. Landry Carlton paced Wylie with 126 yards and two scores on the ground, while KJ Long threw for 238 yards and a pair of touchdown passes. Braden Regala had a big game at receiver, catching 8 passes for 154 yards and a touchdown.

Zephyr snapped a 15-game losing streak with a dominating 46-0 victory at Veribest (0-2). The Bulldogs (1-1) only allowed 38 yards to the Falcons. Jayden Millican ran for 144 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Zephyr offensive attack.
