Abilene High (4-6) at El Paso Del Valle (9-1) - Thursday, 7 p.m. CT

Series: Del Valle leads 1-0

The Eagles return to action after their week 11 open date in the playoffs against what looks a solid Del Valle team.

Abilene High fell to Amarillo 17-10 in their last outing, then the Sandies won in week 11 to knock the Eagles to the four seed from 2-5A D1.

The question has been the same for most of the season for the Warbirds: can they find enough offense to compliment their very good defense? They’ll matchup with a Conquistadores squad that has only allowed its opponent to score over 20 twice, once in a 50-13 week two loss to Pebble Hills (who went 9-1 in 6A) and the other time in a 57-21 win over Ysleta.

Their offense has been putting up big points lately too, going for 63, 57 and 66 in their last three outings.

The Eagles were upset in the first round of the playoffs by El Paso Eastwood a year ago, so they’ll give the Conquistadors their full attention to avoid falling to an El Paso team in the playoffs for the second straight year. They are 16-3 overall in their playoff history against El Paso schools.

Del Valle won the only previous meeting 14-10 in the area round in 2001.

Cooper (5-5) at El Paso Andress (5-5) - Thursday, 5 p.m. CT

Series: First meeting

Abilene ISD will be getting plenty points on the gas cards Thursday as the Cooper Cougars also headed way west to take on El Paso Andress.

The Eagles went 4-1 in district play, winning their last three games to clinch the two seed and a home playoff game in the bi-district round. Their 35-28 win over Chapin in week 11 sealed the two seed. Their only district loss was a 49-20 defeat against district champion Canutillo. Andress got off to a slow start in 2022, losing four of their first five games, including a 74-14 loss at Midland High in week five.

Cooper hopes to bounce back after missed opportunities and turnovers doomed them in a 20-10 loss to Wylie.

The Cougars are 16-0 all-time in the playoffs against El Paso schools. Their last matchup was a 42-21 bi-district win in 2019.

THE PICK: COOPER

El Paso High (5-5) at Wylie (7-3) - Thursday, 6 p.m. CT

Series: First meeting

The Bulldogs, fresh off beating Cooper for their first 5A district title, have earned a bi-district home game against El Paso High Thursday night.

Wylie played its first game against an Amarillo ISD school two weeks ago, now they play their first football game against an El Paso school.

The Tigers snuck into the playoffs as the four seed out of 1-5A D1 but enter on a two-game losing streak after falling to Chapin 42-6 and Canutillo 49-0. They beat Burgess and Jefferson to earn their playoff berth.

The Bulldogs are back in the postseason after missing out a year ago and aiming for their first 5A playoff win. They have been very good offensively all year, averaging nearly 37 points per game, and have stepped things up defensively over the past three weeks. They shut out Lubbock High, slipped past Palo Duro 27-24 then slowed down Cooper 20-10.

Series: Breckenridge leads 4-0

The Buckaroos aim to extend their winning streak to three as they meet up with Paradise in bi-district round of the playoffs Friday.

The Bucks draw the three seed from District 4, Paradise. The Panthers finished behind Brock and Whitesboro in district play with a 4-2 mark. They only lost to Brock 18-13 and Whitesboro 18-7. They are led by quarterback Austin Iglesias who passed and ran for over 1,000 yards each this season.

Series: Tied 1-1

Jim Ned is a district champion for a third straight season and looking to make yet another deep playoff run. The Indians ran off seven straight wins after starting 0-3 and find themselves as the top seed from 3-3A D1.

Jim Ned earned the title with last weeks 31-13 win at Iowa Park.

Pilot Point only won three games all season, but two came in district play by the right combination of points to help them emerge from a three-way tie with Boyd and Peaster for the final playoff spot out of 4-3A D1. They lost to Brock 48-0 last week in their season finale.

Early (6-4) vs. Odessa Compass (4-6) - Thursday, 7 p.m. - Sweetwater

Series: First meeting

The Longhorns were a field goal away from winning district but will settle for the number two seed from 2-3A D2 and a bi-district matchup with Odessa Compass Academy.

The Cougars finished third in the four team District 1-3A D2 and the four wins they have this year marks the best season in their short history. They went 1-8 in 2020 and 1-10 in 2021, making the playoffs both times in a four team district. Last year they were slammed by Sonora 79-8 in the bi-district round.

Their district played a round-robin schedule and gave the Cougars two of their wins over Tornillo. Their other two victories were 7-6 over TLCA San Angelo and 14-13 over Iraan.

Early will send a very good group of seniors out after this season, and they hope that will still be a long time from now. Their 43-21 win over Pilot Point a year ago marked their first playoff win since 2007.

Series: Series tied 1-1

Merkel has a very tough task in the bi-district round as they meet unbeaten and second-ranked Holliday Thursday night.

The Badgers won their first two district games to earn their first trip to the playoffs under head coach Will Kates, but lost to Jacksboro, Comanche and Millsap over the final three weeks to fall to the four seed.

Holliday beat Iowa Park, Jim Ned, Idalou, Childress and Snyder (all playoff teams) in non-district play and then ran the table in 6-3A D2, wrapping up the district crown with a 38-7 victory over Callisburg last week.

Hawley (10-0) vs. Christoval (4-6) - Thursday, 6 p.m. - San Angelo Stadium

Series: Hawley leads 3-0

The Bearcats and Cougars meet for the fourth time in the last eight years in the bi-district playoffs and Hawley has a great shot at beating Christoval for the fourth straight time.

Hawley got past Cisco 36-33 to earn the district title and top seed from District 4-2A D1 and will put their perfect record on the line against a Cougar squad that snuck into the playoffs with a 2-3 district record. Christoval opened district play with wins over Anthony and Ozona but dropped its last three to Forsan 14-6, Sonora 30-6 and Reagan County 30-22.

The Bearcats have hopes of returning to Jerry World after falling to Shiner in the state title game a year ago, and the Cougars should be an attainable first of six wins they’ll need to win it all.

Cisco (8-2) vs. Reagan County (7-3) - Thursday, 7 p.m. - Colorado City

Series: First meeting

The Loboes have to be ticked off after their last second loss to Hawley last week and Reagan County may be the focus of their rage this week.

The Owls turned things around this year, going 7-3 after going 3-7 in 2021. This is their best year since going 9-2 in 2016. They ended up in a three-way tied with Forsan and Sonora for first place in District 3-2A with a 4-1 record, but drew the short straw as the three seed and got the first round matchup with Cisco. They will bring a four-game wining streak into the matchup and their losses this year were all to playoff teams (Wink, McCamey and Forsan).

Cisco had a six-game winning streak snapped last week by Hawley and they hope to get another crack at the Bearcats in early December.

Stamford (8-2) vs. Forsan (8-2) - Friday, 7 p.m. - Brownwood

Series: Stamford leads 5-3

The Bulldogs turned things around in a big way in 2022, improving from three wins to eight. They’ll get a shot at proving themselves in the playoffs now against a familiar foe.

Forsan was in Stamford’s district the last six seasons. They beat the Bulldogs the last two yeras, 30-6 in 2021 and 42-14 in 2020, but Stamford emerged victorious three of the four times before that.

The Buffaloes enter off of a 48-21 loss to Sonora. A win could have gotten them the outright district title, instead they ended up tri-champs with Sonora and Reagan County at 4-1. Kermit 14-13 was their only other loss of the season and they have wins over four current playoff teams.

Stamford could have easily been a higher seed or district champion if they weren’t stuck with Hawley and Cisco in District 4, but they will still have an opportunity to make a good run as the three seed.

Bangs (6-4) vs. Nocona (8-2) - Friday, 7 p.m. - Weatherford

Series: First meeting

The Dragons dropped to 2A this season and returned to the playoffs, going 6-4 with their only losses coming to Early, Comanche, Tolar and Coleman — all playoff teams that went a combined 33-7 this year.

They draw Nocona in bi-district. The Indians were the #2 seed behind Tioga out of 6-2A D1. They entered district play with a perfect record and got to 6-0 before dropping back-to-back games to Trenton 23-21 and Tioga 35-21. They beat Alvord in the season finale to win a tie-breaker with the Bulldogs for the second seed.

Cross Plains (7-3) vs. Wink (10-0) - Thursday, Big Spring

Series: Series tied 1-1

The Buffaloes head to the postseason off of a 49-21 loss to Miles that dropped them to the four seed out of 6-2A D1.

Their reward is unbeaten Wink, the #4 ranked team in 2A Division II.

The Wildcats have won every game by double figures this season, with the closest contests being a 51-38 win over Ozona and a 42-28 victory over McCamey. Their schedule hasn’t exactly been tough, however, as a 38-7 win at 8-2 Reagan County stands out as the best win of the bunch.

Cross Plains has lost three of their last five after starting the season 5-0.

This is the third meeting between the two and all have come in the playoffs. Cross Plains beat Wink 50-42 in bi-district in 2016 and Wink beat the Buffs 32-0 all the way back in 1933.

Howard Payne (6-3, 5-2) at Austin College (1-8, 1-6) - Saturday, 1 p.m.

Series: HPU leads 19-8

Howard Payne will complete the regular season in Sherman against Austin College Saturday afternoon.

The Yellow Jackets can match last seasons 7-3 record with a victory, but were a few plays away from making 2022 even more special. They are coming off back-to-back losses to #8 Hardin-Simmons and #3 Mary Hardin-Baylor, games in which they had a chance to win deep in the second half.

HPU fell on a last-second field goal to the Crusaders 27-24 last week while the Kangaroos were beaten by HSU 31-3 in Abilene.

The Yellow Jackets have won the last two games in the series, including a 49-21 victory in 2021.
