Week 4 Rewind
OFF THE TOP
Things that caught my attention this week:
I'm not surprised Loraine beat Ira but I am a bit surprised they did 70-34.
The Cardiac Coogs from Cooper got an overtime touchdown pass to win last week and get one in the final minute this week to win at Coronado 33-28.
Stamford: still perfect. The Bulldogs dominate Pantego Christian 52-6.
Wylie puts on another offense show, but the defense can't get enough stops in a 56-49 loss to defending state champ Stephenville.
Brownwood slows down the Glen Rose offense and does enough scoring of its own to beat the Tigers 17-3.
Breckenridge puts 62 on Eastland in a 62-12 win, the second most points they've ever scored in a game against the Mavericks. They won 74-13 in 1937.
Cross Plains wins again, this time 35-20 over Junction to get to 4-0.
Jim Ned finds the win column with a 22-21 win over Rockdale.
Hawley wins the 2A battle of the night in Texas in a 26-14 decision over a beat up Albany team.
Roscoe puts 58 on Sterling City in their return to the field after two weeks off.
Bangs wins for the second straight time, this time winning at 3A Merkel 28-13.
May and Westbrook win again over good competition.
Early shuts out Troy 26-0, its best defensive effort of the season by far.
Trent's unbeaten run comes to an end with a surprising 66-16 loss at Paint Rock.
Hamlin is officially on a roll. The Pipers put it on Munday Saturday night 53-8
Abilene Christian got past old nemesis Lubbock Kingdom Prep 76-54 to improve to 2-1.
An odd ending to the Roby game at Wichita Christian
BIG COUNTRY A TO Z
Abilene High (1-3) lost to Frenship for the first time ever, falling 21-7 on homecoming night at Shotwell Stadium.
The Eagles fell behind 14-0 but had a chance to tie it up in the second half on two occasions. One saw them get stuffed on 4th and 1 at the Frenship 13 and turn it over on downs and the other Jayson Henley returned a punt to the Tiger 10 that was called back for a penalty. Frenship added a fourth quarter touchdown to put it away and improve to 3-1.
The Abilene High defense played very well after struggling the week prior at Midland Legacy, but the offense still has some work to do as the Eagles get set for the district opener against Lubbock Monterey. Dylan Slack threw three interceptions but also completed 21-29 passes for 211 yards and a 65-yard touchdown pass to Ryland Bradford. The Eagles actually outgained the Tigers, but could not put enough points on the board in their third non-district defeat at the hands of a 6A opponent.
Abilene Christian (2-1) earned a 76-54 win Lubbock Kingdom Prep, getting a share of revenge for the Warriors beating them in 2021 for the district title and knocking them out of the playoffs in 2020. Kingdom Prep (2-2) led 16-6 after one quarter but the Panthers dominated the second, outscoring the Warriors 40-6 to take a 46-22 lead they’d never give up. ACS led 54-36 after three quarters and cruised to victory. They will open district play Saturday in Trent against 0-3 Keller Harvest Christian.
#1 Albany (3-1) played without some key players and came up short against powerful Hawley (4-0) 26-14 Friday night.
The Bearcats led 7-0 after one and 19-0 at the half on their way to the win in this battle of 2A Big Country titans. Austin Cumpton was dominant on the ground once again, running for 135 yards and three touchdowns, while Rodey Hooper completed 11-17 passes for 144 yards. Diontay Ramon was the top receiver with four grabs for 57 yards and Maddix Salazar topped the Bearcats with ten tackles. Will Scott had nine and also came down with an interception.
Lute Wheeler and London Fuentes filled in at quarterback for Cole Chapman and combined to just complete 5 of 11 passes for 53 yards and two interceptions. The Lions were also without running back Coy Lefevre due to injury. Adam Hill got 102 yards rushing and scored once but the yards and points were tough to come by against Hawley. Tye Edgar had a big game on defense for Albany, leading the way with 13 tackles and two sacks. Wyatt Windham collected ten tackles and an interception.
Anson dropped to 0-4 on the season with a 21-0 home loss to Haskell (2-2). The Indians put together their best defensive performance of the season in shutting out their rivals to the south and holding them under 100 yards for the ballgame. Marquise Johnson threw a touchdown pass and also ran one in from 75-yards out to give the Indians a 14-0 lead at the half. Trevor Henry and Za’Rance Billington also scored in the game.
Aspermont took care of Lueders-Avoca by halftime 68-18 Thursday night. The Hornets improve to 4-0 while the Raiders drop to 1-3.
Check out the game story and Big Country Blitz photos here: Lueders-Avoca at Aspermont Photos
Baird (2-2) completed its four-game season opening road schedule with a 40-25 win at Veribest. The Bears split the four games and will be off this week before finally playing their home opener Sept. 30 against Amarillo PCHEA. Baird jumped out to a 12-0 lead after one and saw the Falcons get within 28-19 by the half. The Bears scored the only touchdown of the third quarter and added another in the fourth to earn the victory.
Ballinger dropped to 0-4 for the first time since 2011 with a 41-19 home loss to Clyde. The Bulldogs have won three in a row and have already tripled their win total from 2021. Clyde was balanced in the win, running for 214 yards and throwing for 258. Blake Carr was impressive once again, completing 10 of 20 passes for 258 yards and three touchdowns and also leading the team with 129 yards and a touchdown rushing. Garis Gray caught four passes for 131 yards and two touchdowns.
Bangs (2-2) continues to impress and will take some momentum into district play next week against De Leon. The Dragons won on the road at Merkel (1-3) 28-13 to even their record. Guy Powell picked up 150 yards and two touchdowns to lead the offense and also had seven tackles and an interception on defense. Kenny Cole threw for 89 yards and a touchdown as the Dragons improved in the passing game yet again this week. The Badgers have dropped two in a row and visit Coahoma Friday.
Blackwell fell to 1-3 on the season with a 46-38 home loss to Robert Lee. The Hornets battled the 1A D1 Steers back and forth all night but Robert Lee came out on top in the end to improve 4-0.
Blanket (3-1) made sure Santa Anna (3-1) is no longer perfect with a 52-16 home victory Friday night. The Tigers picked up 283 of their 297 yards of offense on the ground, led by a 170-yard five touchdown effort from Levi Vazquez. Blanket returned two fumbles for touchdowns to aid the offense, one each by Aydan Wheeler and Braden Day. Day also added 111 yards and two touchdowns rushing.
Breckenridge improved to 4-0 with a 62-12 win at Eastland (0-4) Friday night. The Buckaroos didn’t score in the first quarter, but an avalanche of points began after that as the visitors scored 27 points in the second, 21 in the third and 14 in the fourth. Breckenridge ran for 250 yards and added 209 through the air on 17-20 passing by Chase Lehr. Jerry Lawson ran for a team-high 119 yards and a score and Anson Rodgers scored three times and added 46 yards rushing.
Eastland only trailed 20-12 late in the first half but could not score the rest of the way. Isaiah Hays threw a pair of touchdown passes, one a 75-yarder to Jay Oznick and the other a 65-yarder to Laike Kennedy. The Mavericks fall to 0-4 to start the season for the first time since a winless 2000 season
Brookesmith fell to Priddy 46-0 to drop to 0-4 on the season. The Mustangs have lost two straight 46-0 decisions.
Brownwood knocked Glen Rose from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 17-3 win at Gordon Wood Stadium. The Lions were the underdogs against the state-ranked in 4A D2 Tigers, but took advantage of Glen Rose being without star quarterback Hudson White to win for the third straight week.
The game was tied 3-3 at the half but the Lions went ahead for good with an Ike Hall to Jordan Leach touchdown toss early in the third and added a Hall scoring run in the fourth for the only scoring in the second half. Brownwood outgained Glen Rose 278-275. Konlyn Anderson went for 129 yards and Hall added 53 on the ground to go along with 94 yards passing.
Cisco (3-1) returned to the win column with a 41-28 win over Class 3A Jacksboro. The Loboes fell behind 14-0 early but rallied to lead 21-14 by the halftime break. Cisco went up 35-14, the Tigers pulled as close as 35-28 with just under five minutes to go but the Loboes added another score late to hold off the rally.
Hunter Long threw just six passes, but completed five of them for 64 yards and a touchdown. He added 151 yards and three touchdowns rushing. Trent Huston and Tre Brackeen also ran for sixers in the win and Jhermie Hernandez had the Loboes lone touchdown reception.
Coleman (3-1) saw a 12-game regular season winning streak come to an end with a 31-6 loss at 4A Division I Llano. The Yellow Jackets improve to 4-0 and will likely be the toughest opponent on the Bluecats’ schedule until the playoffs.
Llano jumped out to a 14-0 lead but saw Coleman get within 14-6 on a Ryland Gentry touchdown run in the second quarter. However, that would be the Bluecats last points as they trailed 17-6 at the half and 31-6 at the end of three quarters.
Colorado City fell to 0-4 to start 2022 with a 35-7 home loss to Coahoma. The Wolves only picked up 186 yards of total offense, 71 passing and 22 rushing by quarterback Jordan Garza, who scored the teams lone touchdown, and 93 yards rushing by Aedan Briseno. Colorado City is 0-4 for the fourth straight season and things won’t get any easier next week in the district opener at Cisco.
Cooper came away with a win at the end of the game for a second straight week, this time taking down Lubbock Coronado 33-28 to improve to 2-2.
The Cougars looked to be control with a 27-7 halftime lead, but Coronado answered with three straight second half touchdowns to go ahead 28-27 with just over five minutes to play. Cooper got the last score of the game, however, on a tipped pass hauled in by Jaylen Parker with under a minute to play to clinch the dramatic victory.
Chris Warren threw for 334 yards and five touchdowns, his best performance of the season to date. The Cougars only ran for 42 yards but made up for it in the passing game. Parker (1-64), Cam Herron (5-76), D’Andre Ralston (7-56), Malik Jackson (4-60) and Amante McGowan (1-21) all caught touchdown tosses from Warren.
Cross Plains is one of ten area teams with a perfect record through four weeks after the Buffaloes (4-0) got past Junction 35-20. The Buffs led just 14-6 at the half but pulled away in the second half for their fourth straight victory by double-figures. In fact, the 15 point win was Cross Plains’ closest game of the season so far.
Noah Moses totaled 240 yards and three touchdowns and clinched the win with an 85-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
Early got back on track with a 26-0 shutout win over Troy. The Longhorns (2-2) put forth their best defensive effort of the season by far, giving up just 93 yards and forcing four turnovers — not bad for a team that was allowing 40 points per game entering the contest with the Trojans.
Jaxyn Price threw for 150 yards and two touchdowns, both to Jeremy Brown (who also had a 70-yard pick six).
Gorman took defending 1A Division II state champ Strawn’s best shot and came out on top 52-50 to move to 4-0 in 2022. The Panthers led just about wire-to-wire but the Greyhounds, who have struggled to a 1-3 start, stayed with them throughout. The last tie was at 14 in the second quarter and Gorman led 28-20 at the half and 44-28 heading into the fourth quarter. Strawn came close to completing the fourth quarter comeback but the Panthers held on.
Hamlin is getting back to their winning ways, picking up a third straight win Saturday at Munday 53-8. The Pied Pipers (3-1) racked up 568 yards of total offense, saw three players (Swenson Benavides 157, Colten Spalding 111 and Hudson Smith 104) rush for over 100 yards and held Munday to 105 yards of total offense.
Spalding scored twice, Benavides found paydirt twice and threw one touchdown toss and Nathan Jones added two touchdowns in the rout.
Hamlin has gotten better each week, following up a four-point win over Water Valley with a 33-0 shut out of Crosbyton and this week’s 45-point victory.
Hermleigh (2-1) did not play. The Cardinals will resume action this week at Grady.
Highland dropped to 1-3 with a 69-24 loss to state-ranked Irion County. Highland, playing another team of Hornets for the second week in a row, could not keep up with Irion County who improves to 4-0.
Ira (3-1) dropped a 70-34 decision at Loraine (4-0) in one of the most anticipated six-man matchups in the state. The 1A D2 Bulldogs forced five turnovers and racked up 335 yards rushing to pull away from the 1A D1 Bulldogs in a battle of state-ranked teams.
Loraine led throughout, leading 28-8 after one and keep Ira at bay the rest of the way.
AJ Williams ran for 142 yards and three touchdowns (and passed for 33 yards and another) and Davion Walthall added 160 yards and two scores to pace the Bulldog offense.
Walthall and Josiah Lujan were all over the field on defense with 15 tackles apiece, and Zannon Perez added ten. Malaki Williams picked off three Ira passes and AJ Williams added another INT.
Jim Ned (1-3) got win number one of the season with a come from behind 22-21 win over Rockdale in San Saba.
The Indians trailed 21-7 in the second half but Troy Doran, playing quarterback for the first time this season, scored on a two-point conversion late in the game after a Brayden Shipman touchdown run to complete the Jim Ned comeback. Check out the video of the play above courtesy of Jim Ned Sports Nation.
Doran went 6-11 for 86 yards with a touchdown and an interception and also ran for 123 yards and a score in the win. Shipman added 89 yards and a touchdown run and Breydon Walker caught two passes for 45 yards and a score.
Cooper Mascorro picked off a pass on defense and Carter Wood recovered a fumble, while Trey Hicks led the Indians with ten tackles on the night.
#3 May knocked off yet another state-ranked team to get to 4-0 on the season, taking down Garden City 63-34 Friday night. May put 37 points on the board in the first quarter and cruised from there to take down the #4 ranked Bearkats.
The Tigers continue to tear it up through the air, throwing for 363 yards (232 and four touchdowns for Braden Steele, 88 yards and three TD’s for Luke McKenzie and 43 yards and a score for Ben Harrell) against the Bearkats. Bryson Guerrero was the top Tiger receiver with five catches for 117 yards and three scores and Damian Salinas ran for 72 yards.
Steele led the way with 17 tackles and Salinas added 15 and Harrell 14.
Moran played its best game of the season so far but fell short against Mullin 58-44.
The Bulldogs only scored a combined 14 points in their first three games of the year but got to 44 in an offensive explosion Friday. Unfortunately Mullin was a little bit better to improve to 3-1 on the season.
Paint Creek fell to 2-2 on the year with a 53-8 loss at Northside (2-2).
The Pirates trailed just 16-8 late in the first quarter but saw the Indians score the next 37 points to earn victory by halftime.
Ranger earned win number one of the season in a 37-8 decision over Woodson.
The Bulldogs put together their best game of the year so far, especially on defense where they limited the Cowboys to eight points after coming into the contest giving up an average of 55 points per game.
Rising Star (3-1) picked up a second impressive victory of the season and win number three overall in a 52-6 decision at Cranfills Gap.
The Wildcats came in as the underdogs but took it to the Lions behind 368 yards of total offense.
Dathon Morris ran for 70 yards and two touchdowns and Dakota Higgins caught four passes for 62 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead the Wildcat attack.
Roby, well, where to start on this one?
Officially the Lions fell to 0-4 on the year with a forfeit loss at Wichita Christian, but Roby led the game 74-60 with less than eight minutes left in the fourth quarter and walked off the field in protest after issues with referees, among other things.
Lion head coach Israel DeLeon told the Wichita Falls Times Record News, “In Roby, Texas, we won that game. We don’t care about what goes in the record books. What it comes down to it, with eight minutes left, no one knows how that game is going to end. We were ahead when it ended. We got on the bus, had a good meal and had smiles on our faces. We feel good about how we played.”
DeLeon claimed issues with the chain gang and the public address announcer and took issue with a Lion player getting ejected in the fourth quarter.
Roscoe got back on the field after two weeks off and it was Sterling City that paid the price for the Plowboys pent up energy.
Roscoe (3-0) rolled to a 58-18 win, leading 24-12 at the half but upped the advantage to 34-18 by the end of the third on the way to the victory.
Jax Watts contributed five touchdowns, four passing and one rushing, to lead the Plowboys.
The Eagles fall to 2-2 in their first season of 11-man football since 2007.
Rotan (1-1) traveled to Loop for a Thursday night game, but mother nature had other ideas — pouring enough rain and causing enough of a commotion to call of the contest.
The teams rescheduled for Saturday in Hermleigh but that ended up getting canceled as well.
The Yellowhammers will resume action at home against Strawn Friday night.
Rule fell to Hart 62-52 in a neutral site game at Motley County Thursday night. The Bobcats (2-1) drop their first game under Caleb Barkowsky.
Snyder ran into a buzzsaw at Monahans Friday night, falling to the Loboes 48-21 and dropping its second straight game.
The Tigers (2-2) trailed 14-0 after one and 35-7 at the half and could not recover.
Easton Stewart threw for 127 yards and two touchdowns and added 35 on the ground, while Dom Dominguez led the Tigers in rushing with 82 yards and a score and Hayden Foster was the top pass catcher with five grabs for 39 yards and a touchdown.
Chon Vasquez and Dyllan Angeley tied for the team lead with nine tackles
Monahans picked up the 600th win in program history.
Stamford smashed Arlington Pantego Christian 52-6 on homecoming night to improve to 4-0 in 2022.
The Bulldogs jumped on Pantego from the start, leading 32-0 by halftime on the way to the win. They picked up 497 yards of total offense, led by a 161 yard, two touchdown rushing effort from Hayden Henager. Stamford ran for 372 yards and limited the Panthers to just 103 yards of total offense.
Christian Duran went 9-12 passing for 191 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Nathan Watson was his top target, catching two passes for 56 yards and a score.
Eric Whitaker was the top tackler with eight, three for loss, just ahead of Justin Brady and Kason Vega’s seven.
Sweetwater could not keep pace with Big Spring and dropped to 1-3 on the year with a 20-7 loss at the Mustang Bowl.
The game was even at 7-7 at the break, but the Steers mustered the only offense of the second half to get to 3-1 on the year.
Big Spring outgained Sweetwater 392-159, getting 282 yards and touchdowns passing and a one-yard QB keeper for a rushing touchdown from Gavin Padron.
Chris Gomez threw for 85 yards and an interception for the Mustangs and Jamarian Amos led the way on the ground with 78 yards. Jace Adames caught six passes for 77 yards.
TLCA Abilene saw its frustrating first season of 11-man continue with another tough road loss at Lockney (1-3).
The Eagles (0-4) fell to the Longhorns 76-13. They have given up an average of just over 74 points per game through four weeks.
Lockney rolled up 584 yards of total offense and held the Eagles to 159.
Trent fell from the ranks of the undefeated with a 66-16 loss at Paint Rock.
The Gorillas (3-1) carried a ton of momentum into this game after three straight wins to start the season, but the Indians defended their home field in a big way to improve to 2-2.
Westbrook took it to Spur on the road Friday night, leading 22-0 after one and 44-8 at the half on their way to defending their #1 ranking in a 58-8 win.
The Wildcats (4-0) got 174 yards and five rushing touchdowns from Cedric Ware and 69 yards and two touchdowns passing from Parker Matlock. Hadley White and Grayson Jeffrey caught touchdown passes and Matlock led the defense with ten tackles. Pahton Dominguez added six tackles, three for loss, and Jeffrey picked off a pass in the win.
Winters fell at home to Miles 56-12 in a Runnels County rumble Friday night.
The Bulldogs picked up nearly 500 yards of total offense and led 14-6 after one and 28-6 at the half on their way to the win. Hayven Book threw for 290 yards and five touchdowns.
The Blizzards fall to 1-3 while Miles is 4-0.
Wylie gave top ranked and defending 4A Division I state champ Stephenville all they could handle, but the Bulldogs (2-2) came up on the short end of a 56-49 shootout.
The Bulldogs fell behind 14-0 early but went to the break tied at 28 and stayed with the high-powered Yellow Jackets all night.
Stephenville gained nearly 600 yards of total offense to the Bulldogs’ 516. K.J. Long threw for 223 yards and five touchdowns and ran for 106 yards as well. Landry Carlton also topped the century mark with 104 yards rushing.
Tate Maruska was nearly unstoppable for Stephenville, rushing for 270 yards and five touchdowns, including a 60-yarder in the fourth quarter to all but put the game away.
Wylie has already put 137 points on the scoreboard this season. They only scored 211 the entire 2021 season.
Zephyr is now 3-1 after a 68-6 drubbing of Lohn.
The Bulldogs outgained the Eagles 387-3 (yes, you read that right) in the victory.
Eathan Gowin ran for 142 yards and three touchdowns while Jayden Millican added 84 and four touchdowns.
The Bulldogs have already scored 205 points this season, 84 more than the 121 they put on the board during the entire winless 2021 campaign.
STILL PERFECT
We are down to ten area teams that are unbeaten after four weeks.
Two matchups of unbeatens (Hawley/Albany and Ira/Loraine) knocked Albany and Ira off the list, while Coleman fell to a 3A D1 team at Llano, Rule dropped off with a loss to Hart and Santa Anna lost on the road to Blanket.

COLLEGE ROUNDUP
ACU lost for the first time in 2022, but the team has nothing to hang its head about in a 34-17 decision at Missouri.
The Wildcats (2-1), playing an SEC school for just the third time in program history, held their own on the road against the Tigers. ACU trailed 17-3 at the half thanks to a Tiger punt return for a score and a 79-yard passing play, but got as close as 24-10 late in the third on a Duke Alexander fumble recovery in the end zone. ACU’s other touchdown was a 49-yard Maverick McIvor to Blayne Taylor scoring strike with just over a minute left in the game.
Mizzou outgained ACU 487-308. McIvor went 19-32 for 199 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Jermiah Dobbins ran for 88 yards to lead the rushing attack. Sweetwater native Kobe Clark caught three passes for 18 yards to move into second on the ACU all-time receptions list.
Hardin-Simmons returned to action after the bye week with a dominating effort, blowing out #24 Wisconsin-Platteville 41-0 on the road to improve to 2-0.
The Cowboys stay on track for their showdown with defending national champion Mary Hardin-Baylor this weekend in Abilene.
HSU outgained the Pioneers 387-224, led by Gaylon Glynn’s 127 yards and two touchdowns passing, Myles Featherston’s 73 yards and a touchdown rushing and Gatlin Martin’s four catches for 59 yards and a score. Matt Mitchell paced the defense with eight tackles, and the Cowboys forced three turnovers in the game.
Howard Payne blew out Hendrix 67-10 in a neutral site matchup in Prosper, setting a new school record with 769 total yards in the win.
HPU ran for 375 yards and added 394 in the victory. The Yellow Jackets fell behind 3-0 in the first quarter but scored the next 50 to cruise to victory.
Javian Myles ran for 151 yards and three touchdowns, equaled by a three touchdown, 69 yard rushing effort by Billy Reagins.
Landon McKinney threw for 234 yards and ran for 13 more. Kyle Bell topped the tackling charts with six.
McMurry fell at home to East Texas Baptist 28-7. The War Hawks are 0-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
