Week 10 Rewind/Playoff Scenarios

BIG COUNTRY A TO Z

Abilene High dominated the second half in a 42-28 victory at Midland High. The Eagles led just 21-14 at the half but owned the third quarter and early in the fourth to build the lead to 42-14 before allowing a couple of late scores. Da’King Thomas turned in another great effort, running for 199 yards and three touchdowns on just 16 carries to lead an Eagle offense than ran for 325 yards on the night. Abel Ramirez was very efficient, completing 12 of 13 passes for 137 yards and a touchdown pass to Daniel Gebhart.

PLAYOFF STATUS: The Eagles are in the playoffs and will be the #1 seed from the district in the 6A Division II bracket. Their opponent will be settled this week, and could be El Paso Pebble Hills or El Paso Eastwood. El Paso Americas and Eastwood are both 3-3 and play each other this week. If Americas wins the Eagles would face Pebble Hills and if Eastwood wins the Eagles would have a 2020 bi-district rematch with the Troopers.

Abilene Christian took care of Wichita Falls Christian 65-20 Friday to improve to 5-3 overall and 4-1 in district play. The Panthers have won five of their last six games with the only loss coming by six to district leading Kingdom Prep.

PLAYOFF STATUS: The Panthers will be in the TAPPS 6-Man Division III playoff bracket as the number two seed out of District 1.

Albany took care of Santo 33-6 to claim a second straight district title and 13th district crown in 14 years. The Lions led just 7-0 after one but stretched the lead to 20-0 by halftime and never looked back. The 27 point margin is tied with a 48-27 win over Dublin for the closest game of the season for the Lions, who have been dominant, as usual, in 2021.

PLAYOFF STATUS: The Lions are in the 2A Division II playoffs as the #1 seed from District 8. Their likely bi-district opponent will be Era, who is 2-7 on the season and will probably fall to 2-8 as they face defending state champ Windthorst Friday.

Anson fell victim to Haskell in a 35-18 upset that makes the playoff race in District 3-2A Division I a wild one heading into the final week of the regular season. The Indians keep their playoff hopes alive with the victory. Anson led 10-7 at the half but Haskell took control in the second half to pull away for just their third victory of the season and first district victory of the year.

PLAYOFF STATUS: Anson, Colorado City, Haskell and Stamford are all 1-3 heading into the final week, and two of the four will reach the postseason. Anson plays at Colorado City and Haskell hosts Stamford in a pair of contests that are basically early playoff games. The winners will reach the playoffs, the losers will see their season come to an end. Coleman and Cisco will be the bi-district matchups for the teams that end up as the three and four seeds from 3-2A Division I.

Aspermont fell at home to Rotan 53-8 Friday night. The Hornets fall to 0-3 in district action while the Yellowhammers picked up their first district win. The Hammers wrap up the regular season with a rivalry game against Roby, while Aspermont will visit Ira.

PLAYOFF STATUS: Both teams are eliminated from contention.

Baird kept its playoff hopes alive with a come-from-behind 64-51 home win over Lingleville. The Bears trailed 38-20 at the half but rallied to take the lead early in the fourth and pulled away for the win to stay in the playoff chase.

PLAYOFF STATUS: Baird is in the postseason with a win over Gorman next week. If Lingleville somehow upsets top-ranked May there would be a three-way tie for the district title and the two spots would be decided by a point differential. If the Bears enter the postseason as the #2 seed they’ll likely face #4 Water Valley for a second straight season. Eden and Irion County are also in the playoff mix out of District 14-1A Division I.

Ballinger knocked Bangs out of playoff contention with a 46-3 road win Friday night. Ballinger outgained the Dragons 450 to 187 on their way to a convincing victory, their second straight after losing their first two district games.

PLAYOFF STATUS: Ballinger is in the playoffs and will play for seeding next week against Sonora. There COULD be a four-way tie for first place in the district if the Bearcats beat Sonora, Bangs upsets Brady and Grape Creek gets upset by Ingram Moore. The most likely scenario is the Bearcats are the #3 seed with a win and the # 4 seed with a loss. The #4 seed will face Crane in the bi-district round, while the #3 seed will take on the winner of the Alpine/Anthony game. Bangs has been eliminated from contention and wraps up the regular season at Brady.

Blackwell kept its district championship hopes alive with a 52-6 win at Trent in a game that ended at the half.

PLAYOFF STATUS: Blackwell will host Loraine for the District 6-1A Division II championship Friday night. The district champ will face the loser of the Balmorhea/Sanderson game Friday. The Blackwell/Loraine loser will take on the Balmorhea/Sanderson winner in the bi-district round. Trent has been eliminated from contention but wraps up its most successful season in years with a 4-6 record.

Blanket got a forfeit win over a beat-up Brookesmith squad to improve to 8-1 overall and 3-0 in district play.

PLAYOFF STATUS: Blanket is the district champion and will most likely take on Cherokee in the first round of the playoffs. Brookesmith has been eliminated from contention.

Breckenridge gave top-ranked Jim Ned one of its closer battles of the season in a 35-12 ballgame Friday night. The Indians clinched the district title for the second straight season with the victory. Jim Ned led just 14-6 after one but extended the lead to 21-6 by the half. The Buckaroos got as close as 21-12 in the third but could not complete the rally. Xavier Wishert dominated once again, running for 237 yards to push his season total to 1,851 yards and 21 touchdowns for the season.

PLAYOFF STATUS: Jim Ned is the district champion and will take on the #4 seed from District 4, which could be Paradise, Boyd or Ponder. Breckenridge has clinched a playoff berth for the first time since 2018 and will be the #3 seed with win a win over winless TLCA San Angelo this week. If the Bucks end up as the #3 seed they’ll face the loser of the Brock/Pilot Point district championship clash that will take place Friday night.

Brownwood is back in the postseason for a 13th straight season after picking up an easy 49-13 victory over Waxahachie Life. The Lions jumped out to a 28-0 halftime lead and outgained the Mustangs 463-271 in the win. Konlyn Anderson turned in yet another great performance, running for 213 yards and four touchdowns and is up to 1,685 yards and 19 touchdowns rushing on the season as a junior.

PLAYOFF STATUS: Brownwood could end up as the three seed with an upset of rival Stephenville and a Midlothian Heritage loss at Alvarado. The more likely scenario will be Brownwood as the #4 seed, which would see the Lions taking on the winner of the Benbrook/Kennedale District 6-4A Division I title matchup set for Friday in the bi-district round. Kenndale knocked the Lions out of the playoffs in 2020.

Photo: Derrick Stuckly/Brownwoodnews.com

Cisco pulled away from Goldthwaite in the second half to earn a 46-13 victory Friday night. The Loboes led 12-0 after one and 26-13 at the break on their way to the win.

PLAYOFF STATUS: Cisco has wrapped up the #2 seed from District 4-2A Division I and will take on Anson, Colorado City, Haskell or Stamford in the first round of the playoffs. The Eagles will most likely end up as the #3 seed and take on the loser of the Hawley/Forsan showdown in the bi-district round.

Clyde dropped a 35-0 decision at Wall Friday night to fall to 1-8 on the season. The Hawks ran for 330 yards in the win to wrap up the #2 seed from 3-3A Division I.

PLAYOFF STATUS: Clyde has been eliminated from contention. Wall will face Whitesboro in the bi-district round.

Coleman clinched a district title for the first time since 2014 with an easy 49-7 win at San Saba. The Bluecats forced four turnovers and led the Armadillos 35-7 at the half on their way to the win.

PLAYOFF STATUS: Coleman is in the playoffs and will meet Anson, Colorado City, Haskell or Stamford in the bi-district round. San Saba will likely be the #4 seed and take on the winner of the Hawley/Forsan matchup.

Photo: Terry Thompson

Colorado City, like just about everyone else Hawley has played this season, could not get any offense going in a 55-0 loss to the Bearcats. Hawley led 42-0 by the half and cruised to victory. The Bearcats have now shut out six consecutive opponents and still have only allowed 21 points all season, the fewest in the state. Hawley gets set to face Forsan for the district title next week.

PLAYOFF STATUS: The Bearcats are in the playoffs and will be the #1 or #2 seed depending on the outcome of their game against Forsan. The #1 seed will more than likely face San Saba in bi-district, while the #2 seed will likely face Goldthwaite.

Cooper dropped a third straight road district game 52-23 at Azle. The Cougars got off to another slow start and could not recover, trailing 14-0 after one and 24-0 at the half. Chris Warren had a pretty good night, throwing for 294 yards and three touchdowns, but also threw a pair of interceptions.

PLAYOFF STATUS: Cooper will be in the playoffs as the #4 seed from District 3-5A Division I with a win over Crowley at home Friday. Crowley would earn the four seed with a win and a Granbury loss. Crowley and Granbury wins would put them into a three-way tie with Cooper for the last playoff spot and go to a points tiebreaker. The #4 seed will have to travel to District 4 champ Colleyville Heritage in the bi-district round of the playoffs.

Cross Plains did not play this week and will finish up the regular season at home against state-ranked Albany.

PLAYOFF STATUS: The Buffaloes are in the playoffs even with a loss to Albany this week and will be the four seed from District 8-2A Division II. The likely bi-district matchup will be against District 7 champion Muenster, who checks in at #2 in the state rankings.

Early earned a second straight trip to the playoffs with a 72-0 take down of TLCA San Angelo. The Longhorns led 21-0 after one and 44-0 at the half on the way to the win. Early outgained the Eagles 380 to 26.

PLAYOFF STATUS: Early will most likely be the #4 seed from District 3-3A Division I and meet up with the winner of the Brock/Pilot Point matchup in the bi-district round. If Early can upset Wall and Breckenridge is upset by TLCA San Angelo the Longhorns could end up as the #3 seed, and an Early win with a Breckenridge win would put the Hawks, Bucks and Longhorns in a three-way tie for second place and go to points. An Early win and a Breckenridge loss would get the Longhorns the #2 seed.

Eastland rallied past Merkel 45-21 and is now in a three-way tie with Dublin and Jacksboro atop the District 5-3A Division II standings. The Badgers took a 15-7 lead in the second quarter but saw the Mavericks score next 38 points on their way to the win.

PLAYOFF STATUS: Eastland visits Dublin in a huge matchup this week. The Mavericks can win the district with a win and a Jacksboro loss at home to Millsap and they’d finish second if they win and the Tigers beat the Bulldogs. An Eastland loss would get them in the playoffs as the #3 seed. If the Mavs win district they’ll face the winner of the Nocona/Wichita Falls City View game in the bi-district round, if they finish second they’d likely matchup against Henrietta (assuming a Henrietta loss against unbeaten Holliday), and if they end up third they’d most likely matchup with Callisburg. Merkel has been eliminated from contention.

Hamlin was off Friday night and will return to play at Roscoe.

PLAYOFF STATUS: Eliminated from contention.

Hermleigh earned the District 7-1A Division I title with a 66-48 home victory over Ira. The Cardinals and Bulldogs battled back and forth all night, with Hermleigh pulling away in the fourth when the game was tied at 40.

Ira knocked off the Cardinals to win the district title a year ago the Cardinals returned the favor on Friday night.

PLAYOFF STATUS: Hermleigh is the district champ and will take on defending state champ Sterling City in the first round of the playoffs. The Eagles knocked the Cardinals out in the bi-district round last season 61-12. Ira is in the playoffs as the #2 seed and will battle Westbrook in another playoff rematch. The Wildcats beat the Bulldogs in 2020 by a 45-0 margin. Ira faces Aspermont in the regular season finale Friday and Hermleigh is off.

Photo: Hermleigh ISD

Highland wrapped up their year with a 60-14 home win over Bronte. The Hornets end the season with 5-5 overall record and a 2-2 district mark. Highland has not made the playoffs since 2017 despite going 24-16 in that span.

PLAYOFF STATUS: Eliminated.

Photo: Dency McClure/Texas 1A Fan

Loraine knocked TLCA Abilene out of the playoff race and set up a district title showdown against Blackwell with a 65-12 win Friday. The Bulldogs had the win wrapped up by halftime after building a 57-0 lead in the second quarter.

PLAYOFF STATUS: Loraine is the #1 seed with a win over Blackwell and the #2 seed with a loss. The district champ will face the loser of the Balmorhea/Sanderson game Friday. The Blackwell/Loraine loser will take on the Balmorhea/Sanderson winner.

Photo: SMcCowen Photography

Lueders-Avoca dominated Woodson 46-0 to set themselves up in great position to reach the playoffs for the fifth straight season. The Raiders led 38-0 at the half and put the game way early in the third quarter.

PLAYOFF STATUS: The Raiders are in with a win over Paint Creek or a loss and a Woodson loss to Throckmorton. They would be in a three-way tie for first with a win and an unlikely Woodson win over the Greyhounds. The #2 seed would probably give the Raiders a bi-district matchup against Gold-Burg, who is 7-2 overall and 2-0 in district play entering its season finale against 3-4, 1-1 Forestburg.

May did not hit the field Friday night and will resume the regular season at Lingleville

PLAYOFF STATUS: The Tigers can clinch the outright district title with a win over the Cardinals. They would end up in a three-way tie with Baird and Lingleville with a loss and a Baird win over Gorman. The most likely scenario will see the Tigers in the playoffs as the #1 seed and a matchup against the Irion County/Water Valley loser in the bi-district round. May knocked Irion County out of the playoffs 46-0 a year ago.

Photo: Dency McClure/Texas 1A Fan

Moran ended district play with a 52-6 loss at state ranked Throckmorton in a game that ended at the half. Moran had to play five on six due to injuries at the end. They will face the Rochelle JV in Mullin in the season finale this week.

PLAYOFF STATUS: Eliminated from contention.

Paint Creek took a break from the action this week and will conclude the year at home against Lueders-Avoca.

PLAYOFF STATUS: Eliminated from contention.

Ranger knocked off the Strawn JV 60-18 Thursday night to improve to 5-4 on the season. The Bulldogs are not eligible for the playoffs this season and will wrap up the year against 5-3 Temple Centex Homeschool on Saturday.

Rising Star knocked off Panther Creek 70-44 to finish the regular season with a 5-4 mark in their first year under head coach Derek Stevens.

PLAYOFF STATUS: The Wildcats are most likely done, but could enter into a three-way tie for second place in District 15-1A Division II if Panther Creek upsets Blanket and Brookesmith upsets Sidney. That would put all three teams at 2-2 and go to a points differential tiebreaker.

Roby was off this week and will finish the season with a rivalry matchup against Rotan.

PLAYOFF STATUS: Eliminated from contention.

Roscoe wrapped up a great turnaround season with a 46-6 win at Lockney to claim the District 5-2A Division II championship. The Plowboys dominated from the start, scoring the first 46 points of the game before giving up a late touchdown. The Plowboys can finish the season 9-1 with a win over Hamlin after going 1-9 in the regular season a year ago.

PLAYOFF STATUS: Roscoe will face either Olney or Quanah in the first round of the playoffs. The Cubs and Indians play in Quanah this week — the loser will take on Roscoe in bi-district and the winner will get the winner of the Lockney/Ralls matchup.

Rule dropped a 54-6 decision to state-ranked Benjamin in a clash for the district title Friday night. The Bobcats have not won a game on the field since Sept. 10 but still have a winning record for the season.

PLAYOFF STATUS: Rule is in with a win at home over Chillicothe in the season finale. The Eagles are just 2-7 and picked up a 59-7 win over Harrold last week to stay in the playoff chase. If the Bobcats make the playoffs they’ll take on the winner of the Jayton/Motley County showdown set for Friday night. Both teams are 9-0, Jayton is ranked #7 while Motley County has been #1 ranked team in 1A Division II all season.

Santa Anna ended the season with a 52-26 loss to Gorman. The Mountaineers won all their non-district games but lost all four district games for the second straight season.

PLAYOFF STATUS: Eliminated from contention.

Snyder dropped a district game to Midland Greenwood 34-7 but earned a playoff berth thanks to a Monahans win over Pecos. The Tigers fell behind 14-0 but got as close as 14-7 at halftime before the Rangers pulled away. Snyder only managed 146 yards of offense and gave up 195 yards rushing to the Rangers.

PLAYOFF STATUS: Snyder is in the postseason and will be the #3 seed with a win over Pecos in the season finale. The Tigers could still be #3 if they lose and Monahans loses to Sweetwater and they’d end up #4 with a loss and a Monahans win. Seminole would be the most likely matchup if the Tigers are #3 and Lubbock Estacado would be the opponent if they end up #4.

Stamford lost to tenth ranked Forsan 30-6 at home to drop to 1-3 in district play. The Bulldogs were in it in the fourth quarter, trailing just 16-8, but saw the Buffaloes pull away late to improve to 9-0.

Sweetwater enjoyed the bye week and will wrap up the regular season at Monahans.

PLAYOFF STATUS: The Mustangs are in the playoffs as the District 1-4A Division II champs. Even if they lose to the Loboes they’d be the #1 seed in the playoffs courtesy of their win over Midland Greenwood. Sweetwater will face the loser of Friday’s Borger at Perryton game in the bi-district round.

Photo: Kevin Wright Photography and Design

Westbrook rolled past Robert Lee 45-0 and is locked in as the top seed in the playoffs from District 8-1A Division I.

PLAYOFF STATUS: Westbrook will face Ira in the bi-district round of the playoffs for the second season in a row.

Photo: Dency McClure/Texas 1A Fan

Winters stayed in the playoff mix with a 55-21 defeat of De Leon Friday night. The Blizzards saw the Bearcats get as close as 20-14 in the second quarter before they pulled away for the win.

PLAYOFF STATUS: Winters would have to beat state-ranked Coleman and see San Saba lose to Cisco and Goldthwaite lose to De Leon to have any shot at the postseason. I believe they still would not be able to get into the playoffs in a points tiebreaker (Goldthwaite would be +17, San Saba +13 and Winters -30).

Wylie lost 38-10 at home to #5 Lubbock Cooper to drop to 1-3 in district play. The Bulldogs needed to win to control their own playoff destiny, now they will need some help. Cooper jumped out to a 21-0 lead and the Bulldogs never could get back in it. Wylie was limited to just 202 yards of total offense, 70 rushing and 132 passing in the loss.

PLAYOFF STATUS: Wylie needs to beat Plainview and hope Wichita Falls can upset Wichita Falls Rider and Lubbock Cooper beats Canyon Randall. That would give the Coyotes the three seed and lock the Bulldogs into a fourth-place tie with Randall, a team they beat 16-13 and have the tie-breaker against. The #4 seed will play the winner of the District 4 championship game this week between Grapevine (6-3, 5-1) and Forth Worth Wyatt (7-2, 6-0)

Zephyr’s season ended with a 71-21 loss to Evant. The Bulldogs finish the season 0-10 and will take a 14-game losing streak with them into 2022.

PLAYOFF STATUS: Eliminated from contention.

STILL PERFECT

No change (again) as Jim Ned, Coleman, Hawley, Albany and Hermleigh won by a combined 238-73 (May was off).

COLLEGE ROUND-UP

ACU fell on the road at Stephen F. Austin 41-27 in an all-purple battle Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats held a 6-3 lead in the second quarter but saw the Lumberjacks score the next 17 points to go up for good. The Wildcats are on the road again Saturday at Jacksonville State.

Hardin-Simmons got the best of rival Howard Payne 38-14 in a battle for second place in the American Southwest Conference. The Cowboys picked off HPU quarterback Landon McKinney five times. HSU led 14-7 at the half but jumped on the Jackets early in the third quarter to pad their lead. Cade Bell took the second half kickoff back 90-yards and, following an interception, Myles Featherston scored on the first play of the drive to put the Cowboys up 28-7. The Cowboys remain on the road to face Austin College Saturday, while the Yellow Jackets have another big test at Mary Hardin-Baylor.

McMurry led Sul Ross 11-7 at the half but saw the Lobos score the only points of the second half to pull away for a 24-11 win. The War Hawks were limited to 285 yards of offense, while Sul Ross picked up 360. McMurry scored on their opening drive to take an 8-0 lead, but could only add a field goad in the second quarter the rest of the way. The War Hawks will head way east this week to take on Belhaven.

Cisco suffered a 22-20 loss to Tyler on a last-second field goal. The Wranglers led 20-19 in the final minutes but saw the Apaches drive the field for the game winner from 46-yards by Matthew O’Brien. The Wranglers wrap up the regular season Saturday at Navarro in a game they must win to reach the SWJCFC playoffs.
