OFF THE TOP
Abilene High did it again. The Eagles scored 70 first half points in an 84-0 win over El Paso Parkland, tying the state record they set the year before when they scored 70 in the first half against El Paso Hanks. The Eagles picked off five passes in the first half and put it all together on offense and special teams to advance to face defending state champ Aledo next week.
Cooper was 19-0 all-time against El Paso teams in the playoffs until Thursday, when they fell 63-35 to high-powered El Paso Del Valle on the road. The Cougars extended their playoff streak to 18 years in a row, but lost in the first round for the first time since 2021.
Wylie took care of business against El Paso Andress, 46-10. Bear Meng threw six touchdown passes to lead the Bulldogs to the area round for the third year in a row.
Brownwood exploded for a season high 56 points in a 56-13 win over Big Spring. The Lions have a tougher task on their hands next week against Canyon West Plains.
Stephenville and Lampasas also picked up wins for District 4-4A Division I. The Yellowjackets blasted Lake View 70-0 and Lampasas had no problem getting past Pecos 53-14.
Graham and Brock cruised to easy bi-district wins as well. The Steers blasted Dunbar 60-0, while the Eagles had a tougher contest, beating former Clyde head coach Danny Dudgeon and Godley 46-10.
Jim Ned is the only team from 3-3A Division I to move on. The Indians rolled past Iowa Park 38-20 to advance, while Sweetwater had a disappointing 28-9 loss to Vernon, Comanche fell in an overtime thriller to Peaster 33-30, and Clyde could not keep up with Paradise in a 47-0 loss.
District 4-2A Division I swept District 3 in dominating fashion. Stamford, Hawley, Anson, and Cisco beat Sonora, Ozona, Christival, and Reagan County by a combined 182-56 to all move on to the area round.
Three of four District 5-2A Division I teams advanced. Hamilton, De Leon, and Coleman earned wins, while Ballinger fell to Tioga. Coleman started the season 0-7 but has now won four in a row, including their thrilling 40-35 win over Wolfe City.
San Saba saw its season come to an end with a loss to Crawford, 21-15.
Albany was the only team from 7-2A Division II to advance. The defending state champs rolled past Era 46-0 and have now won nine in a row after season opening losses to Stamford and Hawley. Roscoe, Miles, and Hamlin all saw good seasons come to an end.
Goldthwaite continues to be hot at the right time. After shutting out top-ranked Mart in week 11 the Eagles, as the four-seed from their district, blasted District 9 champion Maud 55-12.
Knox City outlasted Valley to advance, while fellow district mate Newcastle handled previously unbeaten Spur to move on.
The Greyhounds will battle Water Valley in the next round. The Wildcats knocked Ira out of the playoffs, 64-32.
Westbrook beat Robert Lee 116-110 in the sixth highest scoring game in sixman football history! The Wildcats will take on Newcastle in a great matchup next week. The scoreboard above had to roll over on both sides!
Gordon faced one of its toughest tests of the season thus far and passed with flying colors, topping 9-1 May 56-8. The Longhorns look like theyβre well on their way to reaching a second straight state title game.
Jayton and Benjamin had no issues in the first round, taking down Crowell and Aspermont. The two teams are a win away from a potential third round rematch, but will have to get past Blackwell and Loraine to do it. Blackwell got past Balmorhea 56-30 and Loraine won a high-scoring affair over Grandfalls-Royalty 90-61.
Strawn blasted Fannindel 76-6 by halftime to move on, while Woodson came up just short of beating District 10 champ Gold-Burg, falling in a 64-62 heartbreaker.
Zephyr earned its first playoff win since 2017 with a 46-0 shutout of Evant. The Bulldogs move on to face Richland Springs next week. Blanket saw a great first season under head coach Jalen Helms come to an end with a loss to 2023 1A D2 runner-up Oglesby.
Abilene Christian will not be able to make another run to the TAPPS D2 state title game. The Panthers fell to unbeaten Rockwall Heritage 72-48 in the first round Friday night.
