Monterey took down Wylie on the road, and the Plainsmen are now 2-0 after going 0-10 in 2022. They are on their first winning streak since beating Lubbock and El Paso Eastlake in back-to-back weeks late in the 2019 season.

The Eagles knocked off their crosstown rivals for the second straight season with a workmanlike effort. The Cougars were never really in it, and a clock-chewing drive to open the third quarter gave the Eagles a 23-7 lead and put the game out of reach.
TOUGHEST LOSS
Tascosa played a tough opponent in Midland Legacy, but it’s not very often you see the (Tascosa) Rebels give up 63 points. In fact, it's the most points Tascosa has allowed in a game since a 67-47 loss to Coronado in 2007.

Give credit to Fort Worth Covenant Classical for scheduling a matchup against Abbott, the 2022 1A D1 state runner-up. The Cavaliers lost but challenged the third-ranked team in the state.

INDEPENDENT 6-MAN
Ranger evened its record at 1-1 with an easy 54-6 victory at Paint Rock Thursday night.
The Bulldogs got another strong effort from James Uhlhorn, who ran for 80 yards and three touchdowns and threw for 89 yards and two more scores in the victory.
Landon Farmer added 34 yards and two rushing touchdowns; Kaiden Cuellar added 50 yards and a touchdown rushing; and Shaun Perry and Oscar Villarreal each caught a touchdown pass.
Farmer led the team with six tackles, four of them for loss, and Uhlhorn racked up five and recovered a fumble that Farmer forced.
Ranger will match up with Perrin-Whitt in their next outing in week three.
DISTRICT STANDINGS
STILL PERFECT
We are now down to 19 unbeaten teams in the Big Country Blitz coverage area after two weeks of action.
Aspermont, Brookesmith, Early, Hermleigh, Moran, Rising Star, and Zephyr suffered losses this week.
At least three will fall in week three, as we have battles of unbeatens between Clyde and Merkel, Knox City and May, and Benjamin and Abilene Christian on tap.
COLLEGE ROUNDUP
ACU 31, Northern Colorado 11
The Wildcats kicked off the season in style with a 31-11 victory over Northern Colorado at home Thursday night.
The Wildcats led 14-0 after one quarter and 21-3 at the half on their way to the win.
The game was not as close as the score indicates, as the Wildcats outgained the Bears 493–190. ACU gained 268 yards passing and 225 yards passing in the victory.
Former Jim Ned great Xavier Wishert ran for 58 yards and two touchdowns on ten carries in his first real collegiate action.
Jermiah Dobbins led the way with 83 yards on the ground, and Maverick McIvor threw for 219 yards and a touchdown.
Darius Moore, Dorian Plumley, and Cirby Coheley paced ACU with seven tackles apiece.
Birmingham-Southern 20, McMurry 19
The War Hawks were an extra point shy of an epic fourth quarter comeback against Birmingham-Southern at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock, Arkansas, on Thursday night.
McMurry trailed 20-0 heading into the fourth quarter but got a pair of touchdown runs by former Anson Tiger Drew Hagler and a Jess Hoel to Krisopher Martin touchdown toss to get as close as 20-19.
The touchdown pass came with 4:22 left in the game, but Jared Mendoza’s kick was blocked, and the Panthers were able to hold on for the win. Mendoza also missed an extra point earlier in the fourth quarter after McMurry had cut the deficit to 20-13.
Hagler ran for 30 yards and two scores, while Hoel completed 32-48 passes for 355 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions.
Martin led the receivers with nine catches for 134 yards and a touchdown.
Damion Dozier recorded a team-high 12 tackles for McMurry.
Hardin-Simmons 47, Albright 3
The Cowboys had no problem with their opponents from Pennsylvania, winning a rare Friday night showdown at Shelton Stadium.
HSU gained 628 yards and limited Albright to 269.
Gaylon Glynn completed 20-24 passes for 354 yards and four touchdowns, while Colton Marshall led the ground attack with 106 yards and a touchdown.
K.J. Peoples caught four passes for 103 yards and Goddy Pyeatt hauled in two for 51 yards and two scores.
Howard Payne 17, George Fox 3
The Howard Payne defense came to play in a big way in a 17-3 road win in Oregon over George Fox.
The Yellow Jackets avenged a shootout loss in Brownwood in 2022, scoring ten fourth-quarter points to push a 7-3 lead to the final margin of 17-7.
Landon McKinney threw for 368 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions, with eight of those balls going to Jordan Carroll for 121 yards and a touchdown.
KJ Kelley and Petyon Lowe paced the defense with eight tackles.
