STILL PERFECT
And then there were three.
Albany, Benjamin, and Knox City are the last three unbeatens after Clyde and Stamford came up shy in week ten.
The Lions and Mustangs had no problem Friday night, beating Hamlin and Chillicothe 71-0 and 52-0. Knox City had a tough one against Valley Thursday but came out on top 60-46.
The Bulldogs on the list dropped their first games. Clyde fell at Iowa Park 21-13, and Stamford lost a 34-30 thriller at Hawley.
Gordon, Jayton, Jacksboro (barely) and Richland Springs all stay perfect in the greater Big Country area.
Brownwood and Westbrook are still the only two Big Country teams with just one loss after ten weeks.
Vernon and Seymour drop off the Big Country and Beyond one-loss graphic after falling to Jim Ned and Windthorst.
COLLEGE ROUNDUP
Southern Utah 52, ACU 14
The road was unkind to the Wildcats Saturday as they saw a two-game winning streak come to an end with a rough loss to Southern Utah.
The Wildcats were tied at seven after one but were outscored 21-7 in the second quarter to trail 28-14 at the break.
The second half was all Thunderbirds and ACU could not rally.
The Wildcats turned it over three times to Southern Utah’s zero.
Jordon Vaughn ran for 108 yards and a touchdown to lead the Wildcats, who will host Utah Tech next week.
Hardin-Simmons 24, Mary Hardin-Baylor 14
The Cowboys dominated the second half against the Crusaders and won their first game against UMHB since 2015.
The Cru led 7-3 at the half but saw the Cowboys get their offense rolling a bit and make some big stops on defense. A key special teams play spurred them on, as UMHB muffed a punt that the Cowboys recovered. Colton Marshall’s touchdown run gave HSU a lead it would never give up.
Noah Garcia ran for 124 yards and a score, and Marshall added 24 yards and two scores to lead the Cowboy attack.
Cade Michna and Matt Mitchell each recorded 12 tackles to pace the Cowboys. Michna had two sacks.
HSU can now wrap up a conference title with wins over the final two weeks of the season over Austin College and East Texas Baptist.
Howard Payne 31, Texas Lutheran 27
The Yellow Jackets scored in the final minute of the game on a Landon McKinney to Gus Charles six-yard touchdown pass to escape an upset bid by Texas Lutheran Saturday afternoon.
TLU kicked a field goal to go up 27-24 with three minutes left, but HPU answered to earn the win.
McKinney had a huge game, throwing for 450 yards and three touchdowns, offsetting an HPU offense that only ran for two yards in the game. Charles caught four passes for 105 yards and a touchdown and Deon Collins hauled in eight for 118 yards and a score.
KJ Kelly paced HPU with 17 tackles.
Howard Payne will visit Sul Ross State on Saturday.
McMurry 51, Austin College 13
McMurry evened its season record at 4-4 with a blowout homecoming victory over Austin College.
The War Hawks led just 16-13 at the half but exploded for five touchdowns over the final 30 minutes to pull away.
McMurry outgained the Roos 568 to 274 in the game. Jess Hoel threw for 376 yards and four touchdowns to four different players. Kristopher Maritn led the War Hawks in receiving once again with eight grabs for 114 yards and a score. James White led the team with nine tackles.
The War Hawks have won two games in a row for the first time in the Jordan Neal era and for the first time since 2016.
They visit Texas Lutheran on Saturday.
Navarro 35, Cisco 7
The Wranglers wrapped up the regular season with a 35-7 road loss at Navarro.
The conference still has games next week, but it appears that the Wranglers, who are off, are out of the running for one of the four playoff spots.
Cisco showed much improvement in year one under new head coach Stephen Lee, going from 3-6 and 1-6 in conference play to 4-4 overall and 3-4 in SWJCFC play.
