Week 6 Rewind

Thoughts, stats, standings, and much more on the sixth week of football in the Big Country, presented by (insert your business name here and get exposure across the entire Big Country).

OFF THE TOP

Action was light on Friday night, as six our area 11-man districts were off. They’ll kickoff district games next week.

Abilene High and Amarillo put on a show, offensively at least, in a key District 2-5A Division I contest Friday night. The Eagles racked up 619 yards of total offense and pulled away from the Sandies in the second half after leading 35-27 at the break. AHS is tied with Tascosa atop the district standings.

Wylie won the Southtown Showdown for the third year in a row, flexing their defense muscle in 29-7 victory over Cooper. The Bulldogs spotted the Cougars a 7-0 lead on a Jeremiah Appel pick-six and then scored the final 29, limiting Cooper to just over 100 yards of total offense and only seven yards rushing. Wylie looks like a contender with Lubbock Cooper and Wichita Falls Memorial in 2-5A Division II, while Cooper is going to have to get hot over the final few weeks of the season to keep its 17 year playoff streak alive.

Brownwood met up with Ingleside in Boerne and sent the Mustangs home on the wrong end of a 55-7 decision. The Lions have won two in a row after a shut out loss to Waco La Vega and have a ton of momentum heading into district play next week at 5-1 Lampasas.

Haskell fell at home to Seymour 24-13 in a game that could have major playoff implications down the road. Windthorst, Archer City, Electra, Haskell, and Seymour look like five pretty good teams battling for four playoff spots, and the Indians are on the outside looking in at the moment.

Benjamin pulled a Lee Corso on College Gameday, saying, “Not so fast, my friend,” to those who thought they may not be a contender this season. The Mustangs went on the road to #3 Cherokee and won a shootout 106-88 in what is the 49th highest scoring game in Texas six-man high school football history. For the record, the new high scoring game in history happened Friday night as well as Bellville Faith beat Waco Valor Prep 148-112!

Aspermont bounced back from a home loss to Loraine with a dominating 56-6 win at Rotan.

Speaking of Loraine, the Bulldogs pulled off a bit of an upset with a 67-66 win over 1A Division I Ira. Loraine has won two in a row and looks like the team to beat in District 6-1A Division II.

Westbrook had its hands full with Garden City, but outscored the Bearkats 32-6 in the second half to pull away for a 76-52 win. Garden City led 38-30 after one and 46-44 at the half.

Our top-ranked teams had little trouble staying perfect. Gordon rolled past Follett 53-8 on the road on Saturday, while Jayton took down Newcastle 72-22 on Friday night.
