Week 8 Rewind

I’ve added a “postseason outlook” observation/guess to the notes for each team this week as we head down the homestretch.

Great - A playoff lock or close to it.
Good - Looking good at making the playoffs
Needs Work - The team needs to pick up the pace down the stretch
Not Likely - Chances are this team will not reach the postseason

BIG COUNTRY A TO Z

Abilene High may have played its best game of the season in a 48-28 win at Frenship Friday night. The Eagles spotted the Tigers a touchdown and answered with touchdowns on seven of their next eight drives to put Frenship in their rearview mirror. Abel Ramirez played a nearly perfect game, completing 17 of 19 passes for 259 yards and two touchdowns and running for 69 more yards. One of the two incomplete passes was a drop and the other was thrown out of bounds on purpose. Austin Wood (9 receptions for 112 yards and a touchdown) and Daniel Gebhart (5 catches for 89 yards and a score) shined at receiver and Da’King Thomas (149 yards and three touchdowns) continued to run with purpose behind an offensive line that continues to get the job done. The defense gave up a few big plays and saw the Tigers pad their stats in the fourth quarter when the game was out of reach, but got off the field more than enough times to let the now powerful Abilene offense build a big lead.

Postseason outlook: GREAT

Abilene Christian won for the third time in four games as they took down Lubbock All Saints 57-42 in a district road game. The Panthers now get set to face Lubbock Christ the King Saturday at home.

Postseason outlook: GOOD

Albany continues to dominate. The Lions beat Hico 57-0 to pick up their third shutout of the season. They have only allowed 15 combined points over their last six games and scored 356 of their own. Albany racked up 520 yards of offense against Hico with 440 of those coming on the ground, led by 142 by Coy Lefevre.

Postseason outlook: GREAT

1st National Bank AB Web Banner.jpg

Anson look good early in their upset big against #10 Forsan but could not finish. The Tigers led 21-7 midway through the second quarter but saw the Buffaloes outscore them 43-6 the rest of the way to earn the 50-27 victory. The Forsan ground game took its toll as the game went on, rolling up 371 yards and chewing up plenty of clock. Anson has another huge challenge against Hawley this week, but will finish with winnable games against Haskell and Colorado City.

Postseason outlook: GOOD

Aspermont was off last week and will resume district play at Roby Friday night.

Postseason outlook: NEEDS WORK

FNB Aspermont Banner Ad.jpg

Baird lost for the first time all season, dropping a 78-30 decision to Fort Worth Covenant Classical. The Cavaliers offense put on a show and got enough stops to end this one early. The Bears have an even tougher matchup on the horizon Friday as they visit #1 May. The final two games of the season against Lingleville and Gorman will likely decide their playoff fate.

Postseason outlook: GOOD

Ballinger, playing again without starting quarterback and team leader Carter Arrott, turned in another head scratcher, falling to Grape Creek 20-13 a week after a 54-41 loss to Brady. It is the Bearcats first loss to the Eagles since 2016. Grape Creek led 12-0 at the break and held off a second half Ballinger rally to beat the Bearcats for just the third time in the series history. Despite the loss, the Bearcats should be in good shape for a playoff berth if they can win two of their final three.

Postseason outlook: GOOD

Bangs got into the win column and into the playoff race with a 43-21 win at Ingram Moore. Guy Powell turned in his best performance of the season, rushing for 350 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The Dragons scored a season high 43 points after scoring just 62 in their first five games of the season. They have three challenging games remaining against Sonora, Ballinger and Brady.

Postseason outlook: NEEDS WORK

Blackwell improved to 2-0 in district play with a 60-7 victory over TLCA Abilene. The Hornets have won three of their last four games after an 0-4 start to the season, while the Eagles came up short after picking up the first win in program history two weeks ago. Blackwell finishes the district slate against Trent and Loraine, while TLCA Abilene visits Trent and hosts Loraine and Olfen. They likely need to win out to reach the playoffs, while the Hornets will be in good shape with a split and be district champs with a sweep.

Blackwell postseason outlook: GOOD
TLCA Abilene postseason outlook: NEEDS WORK

Blanket enjoyed its bye week. The Tigers will get back to game action this week at Sidney in a game that is looking like it will decide the district title.

Postseason outlook: GOOD

Breckenridge took advantage of an Early Longhorn team playing without starting quarterback Jaxyn Price, who suffered a concussion against Jim Ned, and rolled to a 37-20 victory to stay perfect in District 3-3A Division I play. The Buckaroos jumped out to a big lead thanks in part to the passing of Chase Lehr and the running of Jerry Lawson. Lehr threw for 201 yards and a trio of touchdowns and Lawson ran for 76 yards and two scores. Breckenridge is off to a 2-0 start in district action, while Early drops to 0-2 after going 5-0 in non-district play. The Bucks have tough games ahead of them against Wall and Jim Ned, while Early finishes off the season at Clyde, at TLCA San Angelo and at home against Wall.

Breckenridge Postseason outlook: GOOD
Early Postseason outlook: NEEDS WORK

Brookesmith battled hard but opened district play with a 44-39 loss at Panther Creek to drop to 1-6 on the season. The Mustangs led 39-32 late but saw the Panthers score the final 12 points of the game in the fourth quarter to pull out the win. The Mustangs will likely need to sweep Rising Star, Blanket and Sidney to reach the playoffs.

Postseason outlook: NEEDS WORK

Brownwood came up short in another shootout, falling to Waco La Vega 49-33 to drop to 0-2 in District 5-4A Division I play. The Lions led the Pirates 17-14 in the third quarter, but saw La Vega answer with a pair of Bryson Roland touchdown runs to take a lead they’d never give up. Brownwood got as close as 28-24 late in the third and 35-27 in the fourth. The Pirates outgained the Lions 623-504, as both Chance Jones (187 yards, TD) and Konlyn Anderson (151 yards, 2 TD) had huge nights on the ground for Brownwood. Roland, just a freshman, led La Vega with 307 yards and four touchdowns rushing. The Lions will probably need to win two of their final three games to earn the four seed from the district for the playoffs. The best chances for wins come in the next two weeks at Alvarado and at home against Waxahachie Life.

Postseason outlook: NEEDS WORK

Cisco had no problem at all in a 69-0 win over De Leon to improve to 2-0 in district play. Cisco led 48-0 at the half and got a great effort from quarterback Hunter Long, who ran for 141 yards and three touchdowns. The Loboes also returned a pair of interceptions for touchdowns in the contest. Cisco has outscored their two district foes 123-6 so far, but the competition will get much better Friday night when they visit Coleman in the game that should decide the district championship.

Postseason outlook: GREAT

Broken X Web banner.jpg

Clyde earned a pair of firsts Friday night: the first win of the season and the first victory for new head coach Danny Dudgeon. The Bulldogs scored early and often, building a 47-14 lead by the half of their 61-22 win. Clyde was very balanced, throwing for 175 yards and rushing for 177 more. The win keeps the Bulldogs playoff hopes alive, but they finish with a very tough stretch against Early, Wall and Jim Ned.

Postseason outlook: NEEDS WORK

Coleman cruised to a 42-6 district victory at Goldthwaite to improve to 6-0 on the season. The Bluecats led 14-0 after one and 35-0 in third before the Eagles got on the board. Coleman outgained the Eagles 356-202, led by a 107 yard three touchdown rushing and 131 yard one touchdown passing effort from quarterback Jadin Jackson. The Bluecats now get set to host Coleman, with the winner more than likely claiming the District 4-2A Division I crown.

Postseason outlook: GREAT

Coleman CT Web Banner.jpg

Colorado City is back in the win column for the first time since November 22, 2018 after their come from behind 28-27 road victory at Haskell. The win snaps a 26-game losing streak and gives the Wolves a shot at the playoffs. Colorado City trailed 27-19 late in the fourth but scored on a safety and a Chris Green kickoff return to stun the Haskell homecoming crowd. The Wolves wrap the season with games against Stamford, Hawley and Anson, while the Indians visit Forsan and Anson and host Stamford.

Colorado City Postseason outlook: NEEDS WORK
Haskell Postseason outlook: NOT LIKELY

Cooper continues to be up and down, following a great defensive effort in a win over Arlington Heights with a disappointing 37-14 road loss to Brewer. The Coogs fell behind 21-0 in the first quarter and 28-0 by halftime and could never recover. Cooper outgained the Bears 353-339 but turned it over three times to Brewer’s one. The Cougars district record drops to 2-2, but they will be heavily favored to win two of their final three games.

Postseason outlook: GOOD

Cross Plains dropped a second straight district ballgame in a 42-7 road loss at unbeaten Santo. The Buffaloes offensive woes continued as they have scored just 13 points over the past two weeks and only gained 163 yards in this game. Despite the defeat, the Buffaloes are just a win over 1-6 Meridian this week away from earning the fourth playoff seed in the five-team District 8-2A Division II.

Postseason outlook: GOOD

Eastland got a scare from Comanche, but came out on top 21-20 to move to 2-0 in District 5-3A Division II play. The winless Indians failed on a two-point try for the win with 2:45 to play after scoring to pull within 21-20. Judson Beard led the Maverick attack with three touchdowns. The Mavericks visit Jacksboro Friday in what should be a close contest.

Postseason outlook: GOOD

Hamlin knew they needed to beat Crosbyton to keep its playoff streak alive, but could not muster enough offense to get the job done in a 20-0 loss. The game was the closest of the season for the injury plagued Pipers, who trailed just 6-0 at the half.

Postseason outlook: NOT LIKELY

Hawley has now shut out four straight opponents, adding Stamford to the list of victims with 42-0 win Friday night. The Bearcats were comfortably ahead 28-0 at the break and cruised to the victory. They host Anson this week and Colorado City the next before heading to Forsan for what could be a district championship matchup on November 5. Stamford likely needs wins in two of their final three (at Colorado City, Forsan, at Haskell) to advance to the playoffs.

Hawley Postseason outlook: GREAT
Stamford Postseason outlook: NEEDS WORK

Hermleigh should remain in the state rankings after yet another mercy rule win, this time 47-0 in district play at home against Roby. The 8-0 Cardinals have still not been challenged this season, but that could change at Rotan this week. Roby has now lost four in a row, and its first two district games, after a 3-0 start.

Hermleigh Postseason outlook: GOOD
Roby Postseason outlook: NOT LIKELY

Highland’s parade of games against state-ranked squads saw them drop a 62-8 decision to #2 Sterling City. The loss is their fourth straight against quality teams and just about eliminates the Hornets from postseason contention.

Postseason outlook: NOT LIKELY

Ira won a hard-fought battle over Rotan 52-38 to move to 2-0 in District 7-1A Division I play. The loss was the first district contest for the Yellowhammers, who have lost two in a row after a 5-0 start to the season. Ira grabbed an early lead and never gave it up. The Bulldogs head into their bye week with six straight wins and will return to action the following Friday against unbeaten Hermleigh. Rotan will host the Cardinals Friday in a game they need to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Jim Ned proved once again it was the team to beat in District 3-3A Division I with a “not as close as the final score indicates” 37-20 win at Wall. The Indians trailed 7-3 after one quarter but scored the next 34 to go ahead 37-7 late in the third quarter. Xavier Wishert ran for a school-record 313 yards and scored three times to lead the Jim Ned attack. He is up to 1,465 yards and 17 rushing touchdowns this season. That is now two straight wins for the Indians over their nemesis, and they are 84 (!) point DCTF favorites in their next outing Friday at home against TLCA San Angelo.

Postseason Outlook: GREAT

Loraine did not play Friday night and will head to Olfen to resume district play this week.

Postseason outlook: GREAT

Lueders-Avoca was also off. The Raiders will still be looking for their first win of the season when they head to Moran this week.

Postseason outlook: NEEDS WORK

May crushed Santa Anna 58-0 to remain atop the state rankings and make it six straight mercy rule wins. The Tigers were ahead 50-0 by the end of the first quarter and cruised to their third straight shut out victory. Other than giving up 80 in a win over #2 Sterling City, May has only allowed 42 points in their other seven games (six points per game!). May forced five turnovers and has scored 11 defensive touchdowns this season. They host Baird in a key district game Friday, while Santa Anna hopes to bounce back on the road at Lingleville. The Mountaineers have lost their first two in district after rolling through non-district play a perfect 6-0.

Merkel lost a second straight district game, falling in a close one at Millsap 25-21. The Badgers trailed 13-0 at halftime, but rallied to take the lead 21-19 in the fourth before giving up the final score. Merkel has another tough game this Friday against district co-leader Dublin before visiting Eastland and hosting Comanche.

Postseason outlook: NEEDS WORK

Moran could not make it two wins in a row as they fell at Woodson 60-14 Friday night. The Bulldogs beat Paint Creek the week before to begin district play and snap a 14-game losing streak. They host Lueders-Avoca this week in critical game for both teams’ playoff hopes.

Postseason outlook: NEEDS WORK

Paint Creek dropped a 57-0 at state-ranked Throckmorton to see its losing streak hit three games. The Pirates head to Woodson this week needing a win to keep alive any chance at making the playoffs.

Postseason outlook: NOT LIKELY

Ranger beat Bryson 30-18 to run its winning streak to two and pull within a game of .500 at 3-4. The Bulldogs earned the first home six-man win in school history.

Postseason outlook: Not eligible

Rising Star lost a second straight district game, this time 52-18 at home to Sidney. The Wildcats drop to 3-4 on the season and will face Brookesmith and Panther Creek to wrap up the regular season. They’ll need a pair of wins and some help to make the playoffs.

Postseason outlook: NOT LIKELY

Roscoe took a huge step towards winning its first district championship since 2015 with a 26-14 road win at Ralls. The game was tied at six after one, but the Plowboys went ahead 20-6 at the half and never looked back against the preseason district favorites. Roscoe outgained the Jackrabbits 436-288 and won the turnover battle three to one to claim victory. The Plowboys have now won six in a row after a season opening loss to Hawley.

Postseason outlook: GREAT

Rule did not play this past week and will kickoff district play at Harrold Friday night. The game the following week against state-ranked Benjamin will probably decide the district title.

Postseason outlook: GOOD

Snyder bounced back from a close loss over Sweetwater with a close 28-21 win over previously unbeaten Monahans. The Tigers dominated the first half, jumping out to a 28-0 lead, but saw the Loboes make it interesting and pull within seven with under five minutes to go in the game. Snyder held on to pick up its first victory over a team with a winning record this season, and stayed in the district title race as well after two weeks. The Tigers will be off this week before wrapping up the regular season at Greenwood and at home against Pecos.

Postseason outlook: GOOD

Sweetwater remains atop the District 1-4A Division I standings after a 34-28 road win at Midland Greenwood. It marks the second straight six point win for the Mustangs over the Rangers. Sweetwater led 21-7 at the half and 28-7 and 34-14 in the third before the Rangers rallied to get as close as six. The Mustangs outgained the Rangers 423-195 in the win and will host Pecos this week.

Postseason outlook: GREAT

RPMH Banner Ad.jpg

Trent won for the third time this season and evened its district mark at 1-1 with a 52-7 decision over Olfen. The Gorillas have won two of three and visit TLCA Abilene this week. A win will keep them in the playoff hunt with the regular season finale at home against Blackwell coming up Oct. 29.

Postseason outlook: NEEDS WORK

Westbrook was off. The Wildcats get set for another huge challenge at Sterling City Friday.

Postseason outlook: GOOD

Winters fell to 0-2 in district play with a 44-12 loss at San Saba. The Armadillos were winless before this game. The Blizzards host Goldthwaite this week in a must-win game to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Postseason outlook: NEEDS WORK

Wylie turned in a disappointing loss at Wichita Falls Thursday night, falling to the Coyotes 41-25. The Bulldogs scored the first three points of the game but saw Wichita Falls score the next 31 to build an insurmountable lead. The loss, to a team that entered the game just 1-5, drops the Bulldogs to a last place tie in the district standings with Plainview. Wylie enters the last three games of the year needing to win out to feel great about their playoff chances and two of three to have a shot.

Postseason outlook: NEEDS WORK

AHMC Web.jpg

Zephyr fell to 0-8 on the season with a District 15-1A Division I opening loss to Lometa, 60-15. The Bulldogs have a tall task ahead of them this week at #3 Jonesboro.

COLLEGE ROUND-UP

ACU16.jpg

ACU made it a happy homecoming with a 24-14 victory over Lamar and earned its second victory over the Cardinals this season.

The Wildcats trailed 17-14 at the half but scored the only ten points of the final two quarters to pull out the win to improve to 4-3 overall and 1-2 in conference play. Peyton Mansell took over for injured starting quarterback Stone Earle in the second quarter and ran for 106 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

The Wildcats are off Saturday and will resume conference play at Stephen F. Austin on Oct. 30.

McMHSU17.jpg

Hardin-Simmons picked up its third shut out of the season in a 34-0 win at East Texas Baptist. The Cowboys held the Tigers to just 175 yards of offense and rolled up 330 of their own to improve to 4-1 in ASC play. The Cowboys return to Shelton Stadium this week to play host to Southwestern.

Howard Payne’s high-powered offense hit a snag but still escaped Georgetown with a 21-17 win over Southwestern. The Yellow Jackets scored with under two minutes to go to avoid the upset and get to 6-0 for the first time since 1999. HPU only picked up 293 yards of total offense, well under its Division III leading average of 613.8 per game heading into the contest, but still escaped with the win. The Yellow Jackets will host Belhaven Saturday at Gordon Wood Stadium.

McMurry earned a second straight victory with a 48-13 Homecoming bouncing of the Austin College Kangaroos. The War Hawks scored the first 31 points of the game and never looked back, outgaining AC 517-309. Dexter Wyble threw five touchdown passes to lead the McMurry attack. The War Hawks will hit the road to Seguin to take on Texas Lutheran this weekend.

Cisco is on a winning streak after a hard-fought 14-12 victory over Northeastern Oklahoma A&M Saturday afternoon. The Norsemen missed a 43-yard field goal as time expired that allowed the Wrangers to pick up another conference win. The Wranglers head west to Roswell to battle conference leading and unbeaten NMMI on Saturday.
