Week 9 Rewind
BIG COUNTRY A TO Z
Abilene High was solid all the way around in a 42-7 homecoming victory over Odessa High. The Bronchos, playing without injured star quarterback Diego Cervantes, jumped out to a 7-0 lead but the Eagles scored the next 42 on their way to their fifth win in six games. Abilene High forced five turnovers, including a fumble return for a touchdown by Jayson Henley that tied the game and switched the momentum in the first quarter. The Eagles are still in the district title mix and set to visit Midland High on Friday.
PLAYOFF OUTLOOK: Great. The Eagles will be favorites to win their final two games and earn the top seed in the playoffs for 6A Division II.
Abilene Christian earned a key win for their playoff hopes as they took down Lubbock Christ the King 42-8 Saturday afternoon. Ty Armstrong led the way with 171 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. The victory gets the Panthers into second place all alone in the district standings with a 3-1 mark.
PLAYOFF OUTLOOK: Good. A win at Wichita Falls Christian this week will go a long way in helping ACS return to the playoffs.
Albany did not play. The Lions will host unbeaten Santo in a game for the district championship Friday.
PLAYOFF OUTLOOK: Great. The Lions are in the playoffs and can clinch the district title with a win over Santo.
Anson could not muster enough offense to challenge Hawley as the Bearcats beat their rivals 35-0 to collect their fifth straight shutout. The Tigers only trailed 14-0 at the break but the Bearcat defense kept them off the board the rest of the way to keep Hawley unbeaten and in the district title chase.
PLAYOFF OUTLOOK ANSON: Good. The Tigers finish with winnable games against Haskell and Colorado City.
PLAYOFF OUTLOOK HAWLEY: Great. The Bearcats will be heavily favored against the Wolves this week and then head to Forsan with the district title on the line.
Aspermont dropped a second straight district ballgame 62-13 at Roby. The Lions got into the win column and ended any playoff hopes the Hornets may have had. The game was close early with Roby leading just 16-13 after one, but the Lions pulled away from there to snap a four-game losing streak and even their season record at 4-4.
PLAYOFF OUTLOOK ASPERMONT: Eliminated from contention. The Hornets wrap up the regular season at home against Rotan and on the road at Ira.
PLAYOFF OUTLOOK ROBY: Eliminated from contention. The Lions are off this week and visit rival Rotan in the season finale.
Baird made it to the fourth quarter, but could not knock off top-ranked May. The Tigers scored a touchdown on defense for the ninth straight game and earned an 82-36 win to stay atop the District 13-1A Division I standings. Kaden Halk ran for 97 yards and a pair of touchdowns and Blake Harrell ran for a score and threw for two more to lead the Tiger offensive attack.
PLAYOFF OUTLOOK BAIRD: Needs work. The Bears control their own destiny and can get into the playoffs with wins over Lingleville and Gorman.
PLAYOFF OUTLOOK MAY: Great. The Tigers are off this week and visit Lingleville in the regular season finale.
Ballinger stayed in the playoff mix with a dominating 61-0 home win over Ingram Moore. The Bearcats jumped out to a 34-0 halftime lead and never looked back to snap a two-game district losing streak.
PLAYOFF OUTLOOK: Needs work. The Bearcats will need to win at Bangs this week to stay in the postseason picture, but a win there will clinch them at least the fourth seed from the district and send them to the playoffs.
Bangs suffered a 50-25 defeat at the hands of District 2-3A Division II leader Sonora. The Dragons saw another great effort from Guy Powell, who followed up a 350 yard rushing effort with 202 yards, but could not keep up with the Broncos after falling behind 16-0 early.
PLAYOFF OUTLOOK: Needs work. The Dragons face Ballinger in a must-win game to stay in the playoff chase Friday.
Blackwell had the week off and will head to Trent in a game with playoff implications Friday night.
PLAYOFF OUTLOOK: Good. Blackwell visits Trent this week before hosting Loraine in a game that should be for the district championship.
Blanket is looking good in the race to win District 15-1A Division II after a 70-40 road win at Sidney. The game was between the only two unbeaten teams in the district and the Tigers got a four touchdown effort from Brayden Day to lead the way to the win. That makes five wins in a row for Blanket.
PLAYOFF OUTLOOK: Great. Blanket has already gotten a forfeit win against beat up Brookesmith and will be heavily favored to beat Panther Creek in the finale.
Breckenridge battled hard but came up just shy of beating Wall. The Hawks prevailed 29-26 to take over the number two spot in District 3-3A Division I behind Jim Ned. Most of the offense came in the second half, as Wall led 21-20 at the break and then scored first in the third quarter to push their advantage to nine. Breckenridge scored the only touchdown of the fourth quarter but could not complete the comeback. Anson Rodgers led the Buckaroo attack with 103 yards and a pair touchdowns rushing.
PLAYOFF OUTLOOK: Good. The Buckaroos head to Jim Ned this week but finish at home against winless TLCA San Angelo. A split should be enough to get them into the playoffs.
Brookesmith fell at home to Rising Star 41-12 on Thursday night. The game was called in the third quarter because the Mustangs did not have enough healthy players to keep playing. They have already forfeited to Blanket next week as well. The Wildcats improve to 1-2 in district and wrap up the regular season this week against Panther Creek.
PLAYOFF OUTLOOK BROOKESMITH: Eliminated from contention.
PLAYOFF OUTLOOK RISING STAR: Not Likely. The Wildcats need to win and get a lot of help to keep their slim hopes alive.
Brownwood snapped a three-game losing streak and earned its first district victory with a 56-35 win at Alvarado. The Lions got another great effort from Konlyn Anderson, who ran for 230 yards and five touchdowns. The Lions gave up 492 yards of total offense, but came up with three turnovers that they turned into touchdowns that proved to be the difference.
PLAYOFF OUTLOOK: Good. A win over 1-7 Waxahachie Life at home Friday night will get the Lions into the playoffs for the 13th consecutive season.
Cisco saw an amazing 61-game district winning streak come to an end as Coleman proved they are a force to be reckoned with. The Bluecats proved many folks, including myself, wrong and beat up the Loboes 31-7 to take control of District 4-2A Division II. Coleman jumped out to a 17-0 lead and never looked back, racking up 307 of offense and limiting Cisco to 222. Jadin Jackson ran for 133 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another score.
PLAYOFF OUTLOOK CISCO: Great. Despite the loss the Loboes will be big favorites win their final two games against Goldthwaite and San Saba to at least claim the number two spot out of the district.
PLAYOFF OUTLOOK COLEMAN: Great. The Bluecats will be outright district champs with wins over San Saba and Winters in the next two weeks.
Clyde could not make it back-to-back district wins as they fell at home to Early 34-15. The Longhorns got back on track with the return of quarterback Jaxyn Price, who missed most of the Jim Ned game and all of the Breckenridge game (both losses) with a concussion. He came back in a big way, throwing for 308 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead the Longhorns to victory.
PLAYOFF OUTLOOK CLYDE: Needs work. The Bulldogs are still alive but will have to upset Wall or Jim Ned or both to make the playoffs.
PLAYOFF OUTLOOK EARLY: Needs work. Early currently has the tie-breaker over Clyde for the number four spot. They have a likely win this week against TLCA San Angelo before wrapping up the season at home against Wall.
Colorado City came up short in a bid to put together a winning streak, falling at home to Stamford 22-14. The Bulldogs snapped a three-game losing streak and turned in one of their best defensive efforts of the season in limiting the Wolves to just over 200 yards. Colorado City took a 14-8 lead in the second quarter, but Stamford scored the final 14 points of the game to get a key win.
PLAYOFF OUTLOOK COLORADO CITY: Needs work. The Wolves are still alive, but have tough games at Hawley and at home against Anson that make their goals of reaching the postseason tougher to attain.
PLAYOFF OUTLOOK STAMFORD: Needs work. The Bulldogs currently sit in the number four spot from 3-2A Division II. They host Forsan this week and finish at Haskell. A win over the rival Indians should be enough to get Stamford into the playoffs.
Cooper earned a 44-13 victory over Sagnaw Thursday night to improve to 3-2 in district play and 5-3 overall. Jeremiah Riley turned in his best performance of the season, rushing for 255 yards and a pair touchdowns to help freshman quarterback Keegan Anderson, playing for an injured Chris Warren, in his first start. Anderson threw for 149 yards and two touchdowns in his debut. The victory was the 400th in Cooper program history. The Cougars now get set to hit the road to Azle, who suffered its first district loss last week to Brewer.
PLAYOFF OUTLOOK: Great. The Cougars are in good shape as far as the playoffs go. Even if they lose to Azle the Cougars will be in the playoffs with a Crowley loss this week or a win over the Eagles on Nov. 5.
Cross Plains got back on track in a big way with a 60-12 home victory over Meridian. The Buffaloes had only scored 13 points in their first two district games, both losses, but jumped all over Meridian from the start to get into the win column. Cross Plains piled up 520 yards of offense, led by a 185-yard three touchdown passing effort from Kade Purvis.
PLAYOFF OUTLOOK: Great. The Buffaloes, off this week, are in good shape for the number three or four seed from the district, barring the unlikely scenario of Meridian beating Hico and Santo in the final two weeks of the regular season.
Eastland came up short in 51-48 shootout loss to Jacksboro Friday night to fall for the first time in District 5-3A Division II play. The two teams combined for over 1,000 yards of total offense, 581 from the Mavericks in a losing effort. The Tigers scored what proved to be the game-winning touchdown with 42 seconds left on the clock and stopped a last ditch hook-and-lateral from Eastland on their final play. Judson Beard (124), Cooper Wright (118) and Keaton Hicks (102) all ran for over 100 yards in the loss.
PLAYOFF OUTLOOK: Good. The Mavericks are still in pretty good shape and still in the race for the district championship, but 5-3A Division II has proven to be a district full of close games so far this season. Seven of the nine games have been decided by eight points or less.
Hamlin dropped a ninth straight game to start the season, falling at home to Lockney 40-15. The Pied Pipers took a 3-0 first quarter lead but saw the Longhorns score the next 19 points. Hamlin did score two second half touchdowns to match the number of sixers they had scored all season leading up to the contest.
PLAYOFF OUTLOOK: Not likely. The Pipers are off this week and finish up Nov. 5 at district co-leader Roscoe.
Haskell dropped to 0-3 in district play with 28-0 loss at Forsan. The Indians could not get their offense going against the state-ranked Buffaloes and fell for the sixth time in seven games.
PLAYOFF OUTLOOK: Not likely. The Indians will have to win out against Anson and Stamford to give themselves a chance at making the playoffs.
Hermleigh flexed some muscle to knock off Rotan on the road 73-28 to clinch a spot in the playoffs and set up a district title showdown against Ira Friday. The Cardinals scored the first 23 points of the game before the Yellowhammers got on the board, but Rotan could never recover. They got as close as 31-15 but saw Hermleigh extend to a 45-22 lead at the half on their way to their ninth straight “45” of the season.
PLAYOFF OUTLOOK HERMLEIGH: Great. The Cardinals have clinched a playoff spot for a second straight season.
PLAYOFF OUTLOOK ROTAN: Eliminated from contention. The Yellowhammers will miss the playoffs but hope to set a school record for wins as a six-man team with victories in their final two games against Aspermont and Roby.
Ira enjoyed their bye week. The Bulldogs get back to action at Hermleigh Friday in a game that will likely decide the district championship.
PLAYOFF OUTLOOK: Great. Ira can claim a district title with a win over Hermleigh.
Jim Ned stayed perfect, barely breaking a sweat in a 70-0 shutout win over TLCA San Angelo. The Indians outgained the Eagles 543-116 and ran for seven touchdowns, three from Xavier Wishert, and Tate Yardley threw for three more. Wishert ran for 150 yards on just five carries and Blaine Palmer caught two passes for 121 yards and two scores.
PLAYOFF OUTLOOK: Great. Jim Ned can clinch at least a share of the district title with a win this week at home against Breckenridge.
Loraine stayed at the top of the district standings with a 50-0 victory over Olfen Thursday night. The Bulldogs have beaten Trent and Olfen by a combined 112-0 to begin District 6-1A Division II play and will host TLCA Abilene this week.
PLAYOFF OUTLOOK: Good. A win at TLCA Abilene will likely set up a showdown at Blackwell for the district championship.
Lueders-Avoca got win number one of the season, taking down Moran 59-12 on Saturday. The Raiders had only scored 52 points in five games before the offensive explosion against Moran. The victory keeps the Raiders in the playoff chase and sets them up to do the same thing they did a year ago: lose all their non-district games to mostly 1A Division I schools and rally to reach the postseason.
PLAYOFF OUTLOOK LUEDERS-AVOCA: Needs work. The Raiders have a must-win game at home against Woodson this week. Win that one and the season finale against Paint Creek and they’ll be in the playoffs.
PLAYOFF OUTLOOK MORAN: Not likely. The Bulldogs would have to beat state-ranked Throckmorton and hope for some chaos in other games to have a shot.
Merkel suffered yet another close district loss, falling to Dublin 28-20. The Lions are now the outright 5-3A Division II leaders while the Badgers are 0-3 by a combined 18 points. Merkel battled back from a 21-0 second quarter deficit to get as close as eight in the final quarter before losing. Maddox O’Malley, just a sophomore, threw for 147 yards and a touchdown and Chris Delgado caught six passes for 133 yards and a score. Dublin outgained Merkel 307-280.
PLAYOFF OUTLOOK: Needs work. The Badgers will have to win out at Eastland and at home against Comanche and get some help to reach the postseason.
Paint Creek dropped a fourth straight game, 61-16 at Woodson Friday night. The Pirates started the season 4-0 but have struggled against tougher competition since.
PLAYOFF OUTLOOK: Eliminated from contention. The Pirates are off this week and will wrap up a very successful return to the gridiron season at home against Lueders-Avoca on Nov. 5.
Ranger evened its season record at 4-4 with a 46-0 win over Newman International-Mansfield Thursday night. The Bulldogs do not have a game scheduled for this week (at this time) and will be getting ready to play in the Six-Man Independent Bowl on Nov. 5.
Roscoe took it to Crosbyton 58-8 to run its winning streak to seven games. The game was close through one quarter, but the Plowboys turned a 12-8 lead into a 34-8 lead by halftime and cruised to victory. Roscoe got four touchdown passes from Jax Watts, two to Ivan McCann, to lead the offensive attack.
PLAYOFF OUTLOOK: Great. The Plowboys will be in the playoffs and can wrap up at least a share of the district title with a win at district co-leading Lockney this week.
Rule earned a win without taking the field as Harrold had to forfeit Friday night. The Bobcats have only been able to play five games this season.
PLAYOFF OUTLOOK: Good. Rule needs a split over the final two weeks to reach the postseason. They’ll meet state-ranked Benjamin in a battle that should decide the district title on Friday night.
Santa Anna dropped a third straight district ballgame, falling at Lingleville 56-8. The Mountaineers are now 0-3 in district after a 6-0 run through non-district play. They will wrap up the season at Gorman Friday.
PLAYOFF OUTLOOK: Eliminated from contention.
Snyder had the week off and will return to play on the road at Midland Greenwood in a key game for playoff positioning on Saturday.
PLAYOFF OUTLOOK: Great. One win over the final two weeks will put the Tigers in for sure, but they could even get in with, an unlikely, pair of losses with some help.
Sweetwater kept the offense firing on all cylinders in a 61-37 home win over Pecos Friday night. The victory moves the Mustangs to 3-0 district play. Sweetwater rolled up 595 yards of total offense, including a 12-15 for 364 yards and five touchdown passing effort from Leo Holsey. He also ran for 75 yards and a pair of scores. The Mustangs did give up 456 yards rushing to the Eagles, 336 of those by Ezekiel Saldana. Harrison Foster had an outstanding game at wide receiver, catching five passes for 211 yards and three scores.
PLAYOFF OUTLOOK: Great. The Mustangs are in the playoffs and will be at least district co-champs even with a loss in their final game of the season at Monahans. Sweewater is off this week.
TLCA Abilene stayed in the playoff chase with a 69-49 home win over Trent. It is the Eagles first district victory and sets them up with another big game against Loraine this week.
PLAYOFF OUTLOOK TLCA ABILENE: Needs work. The Eagles are still alive but will have to upset Loraine and beat Olfen to have a shot at the playoffs.
PLAYOFF OUTLOOK TRENT: Not likely. The Gorillas would have to beat Blackwell and get some help.
Westbrook finally got over the hump against a state-ranked team this season and stunned #2 Sterling City 60-50 to vault to the top of the district standings. It is the Wildcats first victory over the Eagles since 1940. Westbrook led 40-6 at the half, saw Sterling City rally to take the lead in the fourth quarter but ended up on top thanks to a pair of late touchdowns.
PLAYOFF OUTLOOK: Great. The Wildcats will be heavy favorites to beat Robert Lee and Bronte in the final two weeks and wrap up the district title.
Winters saw its playoff hopes take a big step back with 49-13 home loss to Goldthwaite. The Blizzards fell behind 21-0 after one quarter and could never recover to fall to 0-3 in district play.
PLAYOFF OUTLOOK: Not likely. The Blizzards would have to beat De Leon, which is definitely doable, then upset Coleman and get a whole lot of help to have a shot at the playoffs.
Wylie is still in the postseason mix after a thrilling comeback win over Canyon Randall. The Bulldogs got a 44-yard field goal from Grayson Bearden with under a minute to play to pick up a 16-13 win. Wylie trailed 13-6 heading into the fourth quarter but got an Aiden Kincaid touchdown run with 8:54 to play to tie it and Bearden’s field goal to win it. Randall missed a field goal that would have tied the game at the gun.
PLAYOFF OUTLOOK: Needs work. The Bulldogs will have to upset state-ranked Lubbock Cooper this week and win at Plainview Nov. 5 to give themselves a great shot at the postseason.
Zephyr could not hang with third-ranked Jonesboro, falling to the Eagles 59-0 to drop to 0-9 on the season.
PLAYOFF OUTLOOK: Eliminated from contention. The Bulldogs finish the year at home against Evant Friday night.

COLLEGE ROUND-UP
ACU had the weekend off. The Wildcats return to conference play at Stephen F. Austin Saturday.
Hardin-Simmons dominated from the get-go in a 69-7 homecoming victory over Southwestern. The Cowboys led 21-0 after one and 41-0 at the half, when the highlight of the day happened: the unveiling of the Jimmie Keeling statue in honor of the all-time win’s leader for the program.
Quick aside: I practiced (I say practiced because I hardly ever played) for Coach Keeling from 2000-2001 (hey, I got two rings for my superb scout team quarterbacking) and am elated for him to have this much deserved honor. He won with class and treated all of us well, even sixth or seventh string quarterbacks like myself. Thank you, Coach, for all you do and continue to do for all of your players and for Hardin-Simmons University!
The Cowboys will head south to Brownwood to face Howard Payne on Saturday afternoon.
Howard Payne suffered its first loss of the season, falling at home to Belhaven 24-10. The Blazers clock controlling offense played keep away, which proved to be a good plan against the high powered Yellow Jacket offense. Belhaven kept the ball for 42:31 of game time, ran for 336 yards and limited HPU to just 276 yards of total offense. Now Howard Payne gets set to host rival Hardin-Simmons Saturday at 1 p.m, needing to win to keep its playoff and conference title hopes alive.
McMurry dropped a hard-fought decision on the road at Texas Lutheran 28-21 Saturday afternoon. The War Hawks and Bulldogs were tied at the half, but TLU scored the next two touchdowns to build a 14-point lead. McMurry pulled within seven with 5:21 to play but could not pull even. The War Hawks drop to 2-4 in conference play. They outgained Texas Lutheran 440-395 but turned the ball over twice to the Bulldogs zero. The War Hawks will be back home this weekend to face Sul Ross State.
Cisco picked up its biggest victory of the season, taking down #5 NMMI on the road 38-19 to stay in the SWJCFC playoff race. The Wranglers have won three straight and will be back at home Saturday to host Tyler at 3 p.m. Quarterback Mehki Hagens completed 13 of 19 passes for 176 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another score to pace the Wrangler attack. Travis Dixon ran for 95 yards and Christian Mosley added 91.
